Ugo Fredette in coma as search for Yvon Lacasse goes on for 5th day
Police wait for chance to question murder suspect in hope he'll provide clue to missing man's whereabouts

Doctors have been unable to awaken Ugo Fredette since he was anesthetized for medical tests after suffering self-inflicted head injuries in a suicide attempt while in custody last Friday, said Fredette's lawyer, Pierre Gauthier.

On Monday, Fredette, 41, was charged in absentia with second-degree murder in the death of his partner, Véronique Barbe, while he remained in an Ottawa hospital.
Gauthier said Fredette had to be put to sleep before undergoing the tests "because he was too agitated."

"When all the medical tests were completed, they tried to wake him up but without any success," the lawyer said. "So he's been in a coma since Saturday."

Fredette was transferred to Ottawa Saturday from a hospital in Renfrew, Ont., the town where he was being held in custody following his arrest Friday, some 30 kilometres away in the tiny village of Dacre.

Police in Valleyfield find body of Serge Schinck, 54, missing since Sept. 14

The Sureté du Quebec said they began looking for the 54-year-old man on Sunday after learning he was last seen on Thursday Sept. 14.

On Monday, police issued a communique asking for the public's help to find a white Jeep Liberty belonging to Schinck that they believe was linked to his disappearance.

Schinck's daughter told local newspaper Le Saint-Francois on Monday that she had visited her father’s home on Thursday, only to have a strange man answer the door and tell her that her father had left town for several days.

Schink’s body was found in a field Tuesday near the intersection of Laroque St. and Daoust Rd. in Valleyfield.

Thanks for the update, this is near my town, i don't think there is any link between this event and all that UF did.

I doubt the Valleyfield incident has anything to do with Ugo Fredette's wild ride since Valleyfield is on the wrong side of the St. Lawrence River from where Ugo Fredette is known to have travelled and there's Vaudreuil-Soulanges county, the small part of Quebec that's attached by land to eastern Ontario west of where the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers converge, between the North Shore and the South Shore. Valleyfield is attached by a bridge to Vaudreuil-Soulanges county, but there's absolutely no bridge across the Ottawa River in that part of Quebec, just a ferry from Oka to Hudson. There's no bridge from "the North Shore" between St. Eustache (which links to Laval, the smaller island just northwest of Montreal Island) in the east to Grenville, which links to Hawkesbury, Ontario in the west.

Ugo Fredette, facing a charge of second degree murder of his wife, is showing signs of recovery from the coma that has incapacitated him for the past three days, his lawyer told Radio-Canada on Tuesday.

Fredette is beginning to awaken after having slipped into a coma following the injection of an anesthetic. “He’s moving his feet and hands,” according to Gauthier.

The lawyer said he had no reason to doubt the version of events provided to him by police, but would like nevertheless to see any surveillance videos that recorded how Fredette sustained his injuries.

Search resumes for Yvon Lacasse, now missing for 6 days

Quebec provincial police are set to begin the sixth day of searching for Yvon Lacasse along a roughly 100-kilometre stretch of Highway 117 in northwestern Quebec.

Police are also still looking for
a "person of interest" who they say was seen with Fredette in Rouyn-Noranda Thursday overnight.

It worries me that the 'person of interest' hasnt come forward or has been identified yet. I fear they both may be found together.

Update: Ugo Fredette must be evaluated before facing murder charges, judge says

Meanwhile, the SQ says they've received "numerous" tips concerning the whereabouts of Lachute man Yvon Lacasse, 71

Last Updated: September 20, 2017 1:56 PM EDT

A Quebec Superior Court judge has ordered a medical evaluation of the ability of Ugo Fredette to appear in court to face charges of second-degree murder.
Fredette’s court appearance was postponed until next Wednesday so the medical evaluation can be done. Quebec Superior Court Judge Martin Castonguay said it is imperative that there be a medical report detailing his state of health at that point.

The judge accepted the request from Fredette’s lawyer, Pierre M. Gauthier, and the Crown lawyer, Aryanne Guérin, did not object.

Fredette was in a coma after attempting to kill himself while he was in Ontario detention after his arrest, police said. He has since been hospitalized in Ottawa. Guérin told the judge that she had received reports that Fredette had begun to move his hands and feet and had even opened his eyes. But, Guerin said, Fredette hasn’t spoken or had any kind of reaction.

On Wednesday police would only say that they received a tip from the public about Lacasse's disappearance which has led them to search the rural area around Arundel with search dogs, a helicopter, and dive teams.

People living in Arundel told CTV that they spotted police searching the area, and note that the coroner's vehicle is parked in town.

Research is being conducted at the corner of Route 327 and Chemin de la Rouge. The SQ helicopter flies over the area and a divers team is on site but has not been deployed.

The Honda CR-V was reportedly captured on video by surveillance cameras in the Arundel area.

Quebec provincial police have found a body near the town of Arundel, 20 kilometres south of Mont-Tremblant, where they've been searching for 71-year-old Yvon Lacasse, last seen Sept. 14.

Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Claude Denis said the body appears to be that of Lacasse, however, police must wait for the coroner to confirm the identity.

It's not known exactly where the body was found.

Following tips from the public, the SQ concentrated its search efforts along Highway 327, a secondary road that connects Lachute and Mont-Tremblant in the Laurentians

No. =( Expecting it, but still my heart drops. I hope he didn't suffer too greatly.

Only good thing about UF seeming to recover is that now he can stand trial for the death of Mr. Lacasse, the death of Véronique Barbe and the kidnapping of the little boy.
