Doctors have been unable to awaken Ugo Fredette since he was anesthetized for medical tests after suffering self-inflicted head injuries in a suicide attempt while in custody last Friday, said Fredette's lawyer, Pierre Gauthier.
On Monday, Fredette, 41, was charged in absentia with second-degree murder in the death of his partner, Véronique Barbe, while he remained in an Ottawa hospital.
Gauthier said Fredette had to be put to sleep before undergoing the tests "because he was too agitated."
"When all the medical tests were completed, they tried to wake him up but without any success," the lawyer said. "So he's been in a coma since Saturday."
Fredette was transferred to Ottawa Saturday from a hospital in Renfrew, Ont., the town where he was being held in custody following his arrest Friday, some 30 kilometres away in the tiny village of Dacre.

On Monday, police issued a communique asking for the public's help to find a white Jeep Liberty belonging to Schinck that they believe was linked to his disappearance.
Schinck's daughter told local newspaper Le Saint-Francois on Monday that she had visited her fathers home on Thursday, only to have a strange man answer the door and tell her that her father had left town for several days.
Schinks body was found in a field Tuesday near the intersection of Laroque St. and Daoust Rd. in Valleyfield.

Ugo Fredette, facing a charge of second degree murder of his wife, is showing signs of recovery from the coma that has incapacitated him for the past three days, his lawyer told Radio-Canada on Tuesday.
Fredette is beginning to awaken after having slipped into a coma following the injection of an anesthetic. “He’s moving his feet and hands,” according to Gauthier.
The lawyer said he had no reason to doubt the version of events provided to him by police, but would like nevertheless to see any surveillance videos that recorded how Fredette sustained his injuries.
A Quebec Superior Court judge has ordered a medical evaluation of the ability of Ugo Fredette to appear in court to face charges of second-degree murder.

Quebec Superior Court Judge Martin Castonguay said it is imperative that there be a medical report detailing his state of health at that point.
The judge accepted the request from Fredettes lawyer, Pierre M. Gauthier, and the Crown lawyer, Aryanne Guérin, did not object.
Fredette was in a coma after attempting to kill himself while he was in Ontario detention after his arrest, police said. He has since been hospitalized in Ottawa. Guérin told the judge that she had received reports that Fredette had begun to move his hands and feet and had even opened his eyes. But, Guerin said, Fredette hasnt spoken or had any kind of reaction.
