I know I don't post often, but I do read Caylee's forum frequently. After reading the copies of the e-mails sent amongst Caylee's various family members, I found myself so saddened by what is obviously a contentious, dysfunctional dynamic within the family and extended family itself -- I'm a firm believer in it's not what we say, but how we say things. For example, while I agreed with Cindy Anthony's brother Rick's sentiments on Casey's involvement with Caylee's disappearance, and Caylee's probable death, as an outsider looking in, I certainly didn't find his approach to Cindy conducive to true emotional support. No wonder she told him to eff off! I came away from reading those e-mails feeling that there was a very deep emotional dysfunction running through Cindy's family of origin in general.

I am a probation officer and have recently had to do some rather extensive research on Malingering for a case I was supervising, and I came across a term I had not heard of before: Nondeliberate deception. I thought it possibly applied to what we are seeing from Cindy Anthony.

Nondeliberate deception is when a person engages in deception, but does not do so from a conscious or deliberate place. In layman's terms, it essentially boils down to an elaborate self-deception -- even though something seems obvious to everyone else, an individual engaging in nondeliberate deception truly believes their particular perception of events.

From Detecting Malingering and Deception: Forensic Distortion Analysis - Second Edition by Harold V. Hall and Joseph G. Poirier:

Forensic clinicians are generally more concerned with deliberate deception compared with nondeliberate deception. Nondeliberate deception usually connotes less harm to self or others, and generally, nondeliberate deception conveys no culpability. In actual practice, however, it is usually difficult to discern deliberate from nondeliberate deception. Nonverbal behavior can be an important aid to the trained evaluator in helping to make meaningful those discernments.

One variation of nondeliberate deception can be self-deception, and there are clinical scenarios in which self-deception can be very detrimental. Siegrist (1995) found depression and public self-consciousness to be correlated with self-deception in a student population. The suggestion is that depression and/or low self-esteem may induce self-deception as a coping mechanism. This is a dynamic often observed by treating clinicians. Individuals hold, or share with others, an illusory interpretation of a problem. The interpretation results in a less-than-realistic grasp of the problem situation. Forensic clinicians may encounter the dynamic intertwined with a serious forensic issue. A good forensic example is disputed custody/visitation matters where the extent of parental self-disillusionment can be impressive. Another forensic example is in the criminal matters when family members cannot believe that a son or daughter has committed a serious criminal act in spite of overwhelming evidence. In these situations the nonverbal cues of the involved parties can be very telling and the forensic evaluator must be alert to alternative interpretations of deceptive behavior.

Nonlinguistic behavior is, therefore, an integral aspect of every human behavior and a very critical component of FDA (Forensic Distortion Analysis). Distortion analysis is a primary method in the forensic detection of deception (Paulsen & Hall, 1991). Analysis of distortion between verbal and nonverbal behavior is an important component of that method. The problem is that nonverbal behavior can be incredibly elusive. When nonverbal behavior occurs, it is generally not very apparent to the observer.

I was very struck by the Anthonys’ nonverbal body language as exhibited in the videos released yesterday, as they talked with Casey in the jail. Their language was so stilted – almost meek! Yet, to me, I kept getting the sense that George and Cindy Anthony, if it were possible, just wanted to jump up and throttle Casey through the video monitor and demand that she tell them where Caylee is. Yet, they didn’t. I’m not an expert, but the nonverbal body language, to me, demonstrated that they know Casey is being dishonest – yet, they cannot bring themselves to face it. I was also struck by the fact that Casey is clearly in control of that family – to me, George and Cindy seem to outwardly react rather helplessly to Casey’s continued petulance, and it made me wonder Wow, where is that fierce mama bear persona that we see Cindy demonstrate in her media appearances?

For those of you who have viewed any or all of the jailhouse videos, what are your thoughts on the verbal and nonverbal cues between the Anthonys and Casey?

Moving on, I also came across a very interesting example of a Millon™ Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) interpretive report, done for a 21-year-old Caucasian female with alcohol/drug issues. The MCMI-III measures adult psychopathology. While this is not – I repeat not – an analysis of Casey Anthony specifically, I found it to be an insightful view into the profile of a young female with high scores on the Antisocial/Histrionic, Narcissistic and Paranoid personality scales. Read the interpretive report here.

Just a brief comment on your excellent post. I too felt the same way watching CA. Wow! Where is the CA we've come to know and love? Not a trace of her was evident. It was the most bizarre disconnect.

Very insightful. I can very much see this. I had the same feelings of them wanting to say so much more then they did to her. Something about them did not make me think George and Cindy believed her...only swallowed her pill. Tough spot for them. They must have been driven crazy by all her lies and now they are put in a spot to believe them, or believe their little one is gone forever.

And Cindy further fed into those lies by telling Casey that "everybody knows you did nothing to harm Caylee." Wasn't that bizzare?

What a great post. The profile of that young woman could have been written for KC Anthony. She certainly has exhibited many of the personality traits mentioned

And Cindy further fed into those lies by telling Casey that "everybody knows you did nothing to harm Caylee." Wasn't that bizzare?

Enable, enable, enable. Cindy just continues to excuse and perpetuate the very behavior that landed her little princess behind bars in the first place.

And what about when Casey makes a statement about getting a job after all of it is over (yeah, right), and Cindy immediately says "You don't have to work." What else would she have her doing, more of the same behavior as the previous 2 1/2 years? Casey actually took a baby step forward to say "I know I need to get a (real) job" and Cindy tells her NO, she doesn't! Just keep lying and stealing as your "job"!

Cindy must just absolutely relish raising a sociopath.

Great post- very insightful! You should post more often!

Ya know, for some time at the start of this case I thought that Cindy may be engaging in Nondeliberate deception but as time passes and we learn more through video's, documents and the like I am convinced she knows something of what happened to Caylee. I don't think she had a part in it but I do think she has information that she is choosing to keep from LE. After dialing 911 and her daughter being arrested, her deception has become deliberate, IMO.

As you mention above, this family, even extended family (Cindy's) has some obvious deep seeded issues. The behaviors we are observing are learned.. they begin as a way to cope but through the years of living in the dysfunction they become a tool.. a gift even (in the minds of the personality disordered anyway), of manipulation. Cindy has that gift. IMO.

A probabtion officer- I would love to be one!

On a sicky there is a link to a body language expert on the tapes just released. I tried to copy and paste but couldn't get it over to here. It is great to see that KC says 'yes' but shakes her head 'no', has no real connection to talking about case and looks down or away when talking.......never at the camera........interesting

Which "sicky" would we be looking for? :sleuth:

I figured out that Casey and Jesse had Caylee adopted in a way that would have allowed Casey to stay in close physical contact with Caylee.

That kind of adoption isn't possible, except illegally; but Jesse had family ties to authorities who could have arranged an illegal adoption, and then looked the other way. That is the only type of adoption Casey would have accepted. Casey said, “I was willing for Caylee to have another home.”

Jesse got his family friend in Missing and Exploited Children to arrange such an adoption. Missing and Exploited Children were more than willing to help, because they have an agenda. They want to lower the boom on mothers like Casey, and have the power to take their children away from them.

The people who helped Casey and Jesse get an illegal adoption double crossed Casey… and that is the whole story Casey is going to tell in court.

But Casey hasn't even told her parents, so they don't know what happened. I figured out what happened by looking at the evidence and circumstances. Caylee is still alive, and the grandparents know Caylee is alive.

Casey had numerous, continuous visits to Escort websites, which surprisingly, no one has talked about much. That was her job, she was an escort, in Orlando: a booming business. Why haven't the press talked about this? Odd, because most of her Internet visits were to escort services, where she would be looking to hook up with someone for money, but no one has talked about that. Maybe because it’s a huge business making a lot of money for powerful people. Those people are apparently being protected by the press.

I heard last night that Casey said in her description of Zenaida, “5’7, brown hair; she has a lot of money.” Nannies don’t have a lot of money, but this mysterious nanny does, according to one of Casey’s descriptions where Casey’s concern was trying to get Caylee back, after by her own words, she stupidly on her own had tried for thirty days.

Now, when Casey says she will get a real job when this is all over, she means not to be an escort anymore. Yet, her ignoble mother and father naturally think, "Why not? the money is fantastic." The family has serious financial issues, and moral issues. And who in the family has a "real job". I don't know, I haven't researched that, but Cindy and George don't appear to have serious jobs. Casey spends thousands of dollars on her "mother's" credit card, and the mother is not concerned. Is Casey generating this money in her escort job? Is the mother laundering the money to cover up Casey's escort job?

There is your enabling family dynamic; which explains a lot of the family weirdness.

The most amazing part is, Casey hasn’t told anyone the real story, not even her own parents. She is waiting patiently until she gets to court; which shows real resolve. She is fighting against very powerful people. She knows that, but her story – the real story – won’t be believed unless something else happens.

Ok, what about the evidence that says Calyee is dead? The death band on the hair, the stain in the trunk, the smell of decompostion? Caylee is not alive, as much as I wish she were, she is not. KC can tell any story she likes, but the evidence won't lie.

Open adoption is not illegal - in fact seems to be the best for the child
so your premise from the beginning is wrong

Science has proven that Caylee is no longer alive .......

JohnVaughanCauthen,
You cannot be seriously suggesting that there will be a Perry Mason courtroom moment where Casey stands up and tells the court where Caylee is, having been lovingly adopted to parents who will care for her in the manner she deserves through a nefarious adoption agency who want to take the children away from "mothers like Casey." This implies Casey's one act of selflessness involves her sitting in isolation for months until her trial in order to protect .......... who? Caylee is safe, why not simply say "Hey, I was a horrible mom so this was what I did for my daughter."

What facts and evidence have you used to come up with such a possibility?

And Cindy further fed into those lies by telling Casey that "everybody knows you did nothing to harm Caylee." Wasn't that bizzare?

Who talks like this? Maybe there is some meaning in the way the words are put together, like EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU DID NOTHING to harm Caylee. CA subconsciously telling KC, everyone knows you never did anything for Caylee. I don't know. I'm rambling. Can't think or speak or write clearly after watching all the videos.

Did anyone see CA talking on Local 6 about her take on the jail interviews? She said that she's been saying all along that everyone needed to see those tapes, so they could see that KC is not cold hearted. She talked about her crying and showing emotion. During the interview, she kept shifting her eyes to the upper right. She said that KC is a "desperate, loving mother" Then all of a sudden she loses her train of thought and shifts them to the lower right. In particular, it was when she began to say "loving". Of course, everyone knows that psychiatrists say that when you change your field of view abruptly during speech, you are lying. I guess she believes that KC is desperate but not a loving mother.

Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share....

I'd like to see that video, linky please?
CA really is delusional, unreal!

JohnVaughanCauthen,
...this implies Casey's act of selflessness is sitting in isolation for months until her trial in order to protect .......... who?

I wish I could quote the exact moment from last night. Her parents asked her a question. Casey's answer would have pointed to the very powerful people who have Caylee. These are people involved in the very lucrative Orlando prostitution business. When the answer to her parent's question would have pointed to those people, Casey clammed up, and said nothing. She truly is afraid of what those people might do.

The press may be softening. A caller to the Nancy Grace Show noticed in a video Caylee showed recognition when people talked about Zanny. Casey's defense lawyer ignored the idea and didn't pursue it. Nancy Grace said, "I'll absolutely have to look into that."

If Caylee showed familiarity to Zanny, then you have an innocent child testifying to the existence of someone whom all the authorities say doesn't exist.

This person is 5'7", skinny, and now she has completely disappeared from existence, although in conversations Casey referred to her as a real person, and now, maybe we have proof that Caylee has also referred to her as a real person.

If Zanny is 5'7", skinny, and she has money, that doesn't sound like she is a nanny. That sounds more like she is a spy, or criminal, and those are the kind of people Casey is dealing with.

What about Casey's personality? If she has worked in the Orlando prostitution business for several years, her badness is that she is sexy and very accommodating to men. But she didn't do it for her own gain! She has given most of the money to her parents! She is truly a loving and giving person, almost a saint. Her parents, who she is financially supporting according to my theory, have on the other hand shown they are sleazy people and not much good.

So, Casey is making lots of money as a prostitute and giving it to her parents! Hey, if all of this is true, she is selfless. At this moment, she is suffering greatly while protecting Caylee from people she thinks will harm Caylee. And that is an amazing story, which the press might soon discover as I have discovered it. Who are these people? Who is this rich, tall, skinny nanny?

JVC How did you come up with this hypothesis? Many of us for months have tossed out theories of KC being invoved in some form of the sex industry.

I came up with that theory when Nancy Grace showed Casey's Internet visits. Long columns of her visits were to Orlando escort services.
