The photograph of a 19-year-old aspiring lingerie model from Colorado who has been missing since October appeared on a Las Vegas escort website, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.
The photograph of Kara Nichols was likely lifted from another source and added to the website MyRedBook.com, Detective Cliff Porter said. The ad promised that the girl in the picture was the actual escort, but Porter said that claim was clearly not true.
"We have no evidence that supports the claim that she's in Las Vegas," he said.
Those close to the investigation said that calls were made to the number posted in the advertisement, and family members confirmed that the voice of the woman who answered the call did not match Nichols'. It is not uncommon for prostitutes to use random pictures of beautiful women in their ads and misrepresent themselves in photos to solicit potential clients, Porter said.

In reading the MSM articles, they portray Kara in terms like:
"aspiring lingerie model"
"fostered ambitions to enter the world of modeling"

It's a nice spin, and it does not victimize the victim. Yet, in looking at her ModelMayhem ad, I'm confused as to what she really was seeking.

Her mentioning,

"I've done mostly lingerie shoots so far but I'm extremely open minded and I'm willing to work with you on ideas for shoots so contact me if you're interested in working with me!"

It IMO sends a misleading message.

I'm assuming it means she is open to nude and semi-nude photo shoots, whether those be for adult purposes are artistic purposes, YMMV.

ETA: It's a really bad way to word it but it's the way someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with those kind of sites and the people who are on them would word it, ie. a lil' naively, from my experience anyway.

A lot of her friends on MM were sort of crappy photographers who did amateurish looking 'adult' stripper-sexy style photoshoots (they call it 'Glamour' photography on those kind of sites). That's probably what is easiest to find insofar as making money of of some kind of modeling.

I'm surprised that for wanting to be a model, or at least get paid modeling gigs, Model Mayhem was the only site she was on. Nothing on One Model Place or anything, which is basically the same thing but maybe slightly more legit. Seems like she would have put herself out there more, IDK.

Really not trying to be snarky here: I don't understand what the big deal is about looking at some pictures of scantily clad, or partially nude women. Maybe I am just an odd person, but naked people don't phase me.
In response to your comment about having discovered your coworker is involved in the adult entertainment industry, I am not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that "something needs to be done to stop this blatant exploitation of women". More than likely, this woman is doing this of her own free will. Secondly, blame the economy, but why does it have to become a moral issue or be considered "exploitation"? There are probably many women who enter into that type of thing because they like sex. If you look at the situation fairly, you could also say that men are being exploited as well. But in most cases, both parties are entering into the agreement as consenting adults.
I applaud your friend for doing whatever she has to so that she can still support her family, and hope that if it isn't something she likes doing, that she will be able to find other stable work soon.

Nudity doesn't phase me. What I saw were tasteless photos. Degrading photos. I'm not against prostitution, either- I think it should be legalized and regulated for health and safety reasons. I should have clarified that I was passing no judgement on my friend, that the one statement wasn't necessarily in relation to her. She's well into adulthood, and what she does is of no concern to me. However, when you have children abducted, teens disappearing, and women ending up dead (Paige Birgfield) it becomes a huge problem. Until this case, I had never realized just how big a problem human trafficking is in Colorado. Predators lurk at bus and train stations, prey on runaways...As far as men being sexually exploited, while I know there are exceptions to the rule, I don't read about case after case where men disappear after a sexual tryst with a virtual stranger. This is a risky place for a girl or woman to be.

The disappearance of a 19-year-old woman from Colorado Springs is looking more and more suspicious every day she’s gone. Kara Nichols has been missing for nearly two months.

Her parents are determined to keep their daughter in the public consciousness in hopes that someone, somewhere knows where she is.

They are also concerned about misinformation getting out to the public. Despite reports that Kara's picture is being used in ads in Las Vegas, her parents say they have not been in contact with her and have no proof she is there.

This is what investigators do know, based on a press conference held November 20:

-Kara Nichols was last seen where she lived with roommates in the 6700 block of Mission Rd. in the Cimarron Hills area.

-Roommates tell investigators she was headed to Denver the evening of Oct. 9 and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

-Investigators find it strange that she left the house without her purse and money, as if she was not planning on staying away long.

-They tell us she had no vehicle or driver’s license, so she would have had to get a ride.

Investigators now believe the ride may have been with a brunette. Roommates say they didn’t know the girl. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying that brunette and one Kara may have been with the day of Oct. 9.

Family and friends say that all communication with Kara stopped that night. They call this suspicious, since they describe her as very social. Her parents say she would never stop talking to them so suddenly.

Detectives say it's also strange to find that there has been no cell phone activity since she went missing. That means it could have died, been lost, or damaged.

In this article posted today: according to LE, there are reasons to believe Kara is in trouble. Since we have no knowledge to the contrary and there exists a possibility she may be missing, not of her own free will ...

In other threads here at Websleuths, there are missing cases in which a victim may not have used good judgement and gotten themselves into a dangerous situation. Most recently, Jaren Lockhart comes to mind. But no one judged her, that thread was full of compassion and fully recognized her as a victim.

I don't understand why Kara's parents are being called out, saying they are withholding information or not being truthful. Their daughter is missing and they want her back, not unlike many other parents of missing persons. Shouldn't we have some compassion for them?

I believe there is a great deal of compassion. I certainly feel it for them. However, there is also frustration in their denial of what has become obvious to anyone paying attention.

On a side note, I had not realized before that she had no drivers license. What 19 year old girl this day and age doesn't have a drivers license!?!? Strange. Was it revoked or suspended?

I can't like your post enough...in fact the last paragraph nearly made me cry thinking about it. I couldn't agree more with every word you wrote.

Those poor parents. Their little girl, there baby is missing and have to deal with negative speculation and rumor regarding their daughter. How devastating and awful that must be at such a desperate time for them. So what if she posed for lingerie photos? That is completely irrelevant to her character and doesn't make her a bad person. As you said, they just want their daughter back...the love between Kara and her family is clearly projected for all to see on the photos her parents put on their fb page...they are in a position more than anyone else in the world to say "who" their daughter is...she is Kara and she is missing!!

Exactly what are they denying? Can you give me a link to something in print from the family? I'm not being a smart-butt when I ask, maybe there is a story I missed.

..some people cant get their license for medical reasons.. OR live in a city with great public transportation and dont need one. just sayin. :seeya:

My daughter is 19.. A lot of her friends don't have a drivers license. We live in a suburb outside of Philadelphia and don't really have great public transportation, but they don't seem to be in a rush to drive...

Some kids are late bloomers when it comes to driving. I did not get my license until I was 20 not for the lack of trying, just never really cared to. When I was 19, I knew several other kids who did not have their license as well, whether it be because they couldn't afford a car, insurance etc or because of medical conditions such as severe anxiety/panic attacks. Some kids also continually fail either the written test or driver test and after a while just put the whole driving thing on the back burner.

Sounds like LE has a handle on Kara's disappearance (we can only hope at this point). I am still wondering why her pictures were posted back in October before she went missing? As for her parents, I am sure they have gotten a big dose of "reality," what with JVM spotlighting the case three times, the latest today.

I was holding out hope that Kara herself had posted the photos. Surely, LE must know by now who did post them.

I'm feeling more and more hopeful that Kara is alive, but I do hold very big fears for her due to the situation she is likely in. I worry that she has been taken advantage of because of her naivety and eagerness to get into the modeling industry, and the longer she is missing the more I fear for her safety.

This girl is someone's daughter, and if more people focused on that instead of judging her for the career path she wanted to take, I have no doubt that there would be much more attention focused on finding her than judging her. Her parents must be heartsick with worry, imagine not knowing where your child was, and to have strangers judging her for decisions she may have made. Decisions which most certainly did NOT include being trafficked by people who do not have her best interests in mind.

Kara, my thoughts are with your friends and family. I hope that wherever you are, you are safe, and you know that we will not stop looking until you are found.

Initially saying she was not modeling. Then, on the Kara Nichols family facebook page, Help Us Find Kara Nichols, they are asking media outlets not to post the “racy” photos of their daughter and have also said that the media is portraying Kara as someone they (the family) are not familiar with.

I am very sorry for the situation they are in, and I DO NOT blame Kara or believe that she in any way brought something on herself. If something bad has happened to her against her will, the party responsible is a monster and a predator. It doesn't matter what she did for a job or how she presented herself. Nobody deserves harm and disrespect.

Thank you for clarifying. I guess from some of your posts, I felt you were sort of judging Kara and her parents. I see now that's not how you feel at all.

the one telltale sign will be those holes in her ears. (sorry, I am so "un-hip" I don't know what they are called.. but being a military spouse I DO know that if you take the little insert out the ears need surgery to get rid of the gaping hole.. I know this because DH had to deal with some ROTC students getting their ears fixed before going on Active Duty)

I wanted to add here that I think the proper term is "guaged"? If I'm remembering what my daughter have said correctly.

Neither of my older girls have their licenses as of yet (20 and 18). They can pretty much walk everywhere they would need to go in our area, and we only have one car at our house for now, too. There is a nice public transportation service that goes pretty much everywhere else. They are also the type that ride their bikes to places too far to walk in a decent amount of time, so they are not averse to taking them where they need to go, or want to go, as well. The 18yo and my 15yo will get their license and permit, respectively likely in the Spring though. I am not sure what my 20yo daughter has decided to do although she has expressed a desire to do so before next summer, too.

Also, I worked with a woman when I was 16 yo and she did not drive. She had been in an accident over a decade before, and was too scared to drive since. She wasn't at fault, and she wasn't permanently incapacitated, or injured, but she just couldn't bring herself to get behind the wheel any longer, so she rode her bike to work, and had been doing so for many years (getting a ride during bad weather from family, friends, or co-workers).

Karas parents need to be upfront about her newer lifestyle. Withholding information to sav face will not help bring her home.

They may have told the police, and not want to talk about it publicly, have been told not to reveal it, or they truly may not know the details, IMO. I don't think they are purposefully withholding information, in any event. What makes you believe that would be the case?
