GUILTY CO - Paige Birgfeld, 34, Grand Junction, 28 June 2007

I used to live in a tiny town not too far away from GJ. My family still lives there, so this feels local for me, too.

Fishee, I agree. It sounds like they know she wasn't there for very long. Maybe they had already thoroughly searched exactly where she was found.

was she found near where her family had been doing all those searches? I agree I was shocked when I read she has finally been found. My prayers go out to her family.

So sad, all the searchers were so close they might have been within feet of her.

So sad for her family and loved ones !! At least knowing something is better than nothing at all. Her dad is right to question whether or not there can be closure.
RIP, Paige.

I am afraid that if LE had enough to make an arrest, they would not have needed to find Paige to do so. It is possible that her being found won't provide enough for an arrest at this late date. But am very relieved for her family, in any case, that she can be buried and her father can at least stop wondering where she is.

Search volunteers wonder how they missed Paige's body

Paige Birgfeld's family extends beyond bloodlines. Wednesday's identification brought closure to an even larger group that didn't know her personally.

Volunteers spent weeks searching for Paige. For them, it was mixed emotions all around. On the one hand, many were relieved and grateful Paige could finally go home to her family. But they say they searched the location where her remains were dug up around 15 times, and they're almost certain she hasn't been there for the past five years.

It was family, yes, but mostly strangers. For nearly eight weeks, 200 volunteers took turns searching for any clue that would lead them to Paige Birgfeld.

"We spent day and night, day and night searching out there. Searching this whole valley," searcher Don Bedford said. Bedford and his wife spent a year looking for Paige.

"If one of us didn't see something, we'd send in another group to see what we could find," searcher Sandi Antonelli added.

That was the case for the dry creek where Paige's remains were discovered.

"I personally did walk that gulch with Paige's brother and sister-in-law. There was nothing in there that had been turned over or disturbed," Bedford said.

"It is impossible that that little hill would've escaped everybody's notice up until now," Paige's father Frank Birgfeld added

Just wondering if the soil on Paiges' remains (didn't like to say that) was different from the surrounding soil..she may have been moved. That makes little sense --to move her body--as she was undiscovered prior to this.
Sounds more likely that she was buried and time/elements have uncovered her.
jmo.
BTW. it makes me fume when reading some of the comments on other msm sites when this story broke...comments that were so derogatory about Paige. Unless you've walked in anothers' shoes...you don't know why people make the choices they make.
Just had to get that off my chest.

RIP Paige.

I don't think anyone needs to say anything hurtful about her. It was wrong when she went missing and now she is gone from our world.

Blessings to Paige and her family

Goz

I cannot believe she has finally been found.

:rose: RIP :rose:

Birgfeld, 34, a mother of three children missing since June 28, 2007, was tentatively identified Wednesday using dental records, although a DNA comparison is expected to be completed. Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said Birgfeld’s remains appeared partially covered by dirt, most likely exposed by water or other natural causes after originally being buried there. The gulch is flushed seasonally by runoff from Grand Mesa.

Frank Birgfeld said a Grand Junction memorial service will be organized for his daughter, happening sometime after the first week of April, when he and his wife, Suzanne, have tentative plans to take Paige Birgfeld’s children, including a 13-year-old daughter and two boys, 11 and 8, to Florida. The children are with Birgfeld’s second husband, Rob Dixon, in Pennsylvania.

Frank Birgfeld said he planned to drive back to the Front Range Thursday night, but only after a quick stop at Wells Gulch Road, where he left a wreath above the ravine where his daughter was found.

“I just don’t want to leave ...” he said, pausing and choked with emotion. “It’s just a place out there with a bunch of sagebrush. I wanted to do something.”

Im glad she has been found. Hopefully there was some evidence with the remains that can get justice for her. Now if only all the other missing people could be found. :(

Wishing Paige's family and friends peace.
May justice find its way.

Frank is such a nice man, I have spoke with him a couple of times and he has a heart of gold, he loves Paige so much...

I hope Paiges family soon can find some comfort in finally finding her. I also hope it is not a long drawn out process in arresting the one responsible, for everyone's sake.

Prayers..........

Birgfeld’s bones to be examined by specialist

Authorities were tight-lipped about an examination Friday at Community Hospital involving the skeletal remains of Paige Birgfeld, which are expected to be sent to a Front Range specialist for more analysis.

Mesa County Chief Deputy Coroner Kim Hollingshead declined comment on observations and conclusions from Friday on a host of issues, such as a possible cause of death. Hollingshead, Coroner Dean Havlik and a representative of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department were involved in Friday’s examination.

The roughly 20 boxes or packages of varying sizes holding Birgfeld’s bones, under lock and key at the coroner’s office, will be transported to a forensic anthropologist sometime over the next few weeks, Hollingshead said. Hollingshead refused to identify the specialist

I am afraid that if LE had enough to make an arrest, they would not have needed to find Paige to do so. It is possible that her being found won't provide enough for an arrest at this late date. But am very relieved for her family, in any case, that she can be buried and her father can at least stop wondering where she is.

I watched the documentmentary about her disappearance just last night and the prosecutor said that her case was more difficult to prosecute without a body because it could be argued that, given that she had kept secrets from her family, she might have disappeared voluntary and not told anyone. The family pointed out that she had 10s of thousands of dollars in her house and wouldn't have left without the money, and she wouldn't have left her children. Hopefully the case can now go forward.

The main suspect was convicted of kidnapping and assualt in relation to one of his wives (he was married 3 times at the time of the documentary). The guy worked at or owned some sort of RV repair place IRRC and Paige's car was found very close to his place of work. Paige's last phone call was to a disposable cell phone and the guy was seen on video purchasing a disposable phone shortly before the disappearance.

IIRC, her ID and some other contents of her wallet were found along the side of the road about 15 miles from her car, and I just did a rough check of where her body was found ... looks to be about 22 miles from her car. That's quite a distance

This reminds me of the Morgan Harrington case ... not the same person, but the same type of person.
