I am confused over the second article. We are told there are two survivors that were shot but are now recovering. Why is the article saying first responders were not able to save anyone?

jjenny, ever heard the saying “never, ever start a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel”? Guess, with the sad state of press reporting in the CT school shooting, the saying should be tweeked; “never, ever start a fight with someone who buys white out by the barrel”...

He had Aspergers which isnt even considered a mental illness to begin with. He was a 20 years old adult with a drivers license and fixed people's computers .............not 2 years old and Ive never heard he had to have care 24/7. He wasnt having to be spoon fed and his hiney wiped everytime he went to the bathroom. I have read though that she did take mini-trips out of town in the past. I can certainly understand why she would need a break every now and then.

There has been no mention from anyone through all of this that AL was ever violent. All have said from the very beginning he was the total opposite of violent. He was very shy, and, socially awkward around others. One who well could have become a victim of bullying. No one ever said he tried to victimize anyone.

She had every right in the world to go back home to NH. He did not have a right to murder his own mother who had always been in his life nor did he have a right to murder innocent others. She did nothing wrong but took a much needed short break from catering to ALs every want.

ETA: He was not mentally challenged. He was super intelligent and aced all of his classes and courses.

IMOO

He did not ace all his college classes. Saying he was super intelligent bothers me. I think he was intelligent, at least above average, but that depends on what you call intelligence. Just because someone can do certain work also doesn't mean they are emotionally intelligent or are not emotionally/psychologically impaired. If his mom didn't know how impaired he really was, then I wonder if she was in denial.

The Washington Post reported that the Nancy thought about moving with her son to Washington state where she found a school that she thought could help him. This combined with statements that Nancy was seeking conservatorship shows that she was going to institutionalize him in some type of psychiatric residential program. This is not the same thing as Nancy finding a university for Axxx to attend in Washington state.

I strongly think that this is why he shot her in the head 4 times with hollow point bullets.

Is Asperger's inherited? Has there been any data on that aspect of the syndrome? tia

Scientists aren't totally sure yet, but it does appear that there is a hereditary aspect to the autism spectrum disorders.

Many people who have an ASD diagnosis also have family members with some of the traits/behaviors associated with autism, though not enough of them to be officially diagnosed themselves. This is called the "broader autism phenotype."

"The presence of autism-related traits has been well documented in undiagnosed family members of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The most common finding is mild impairments in social and communication skills that are similar to those shown by individuals with autism, but exhibited to a lesser degree. Termed the broader autism phenotype (BAP), these traits suggest a genetic liability for autism-related traits in families. Genetic influence in autism is strong, with identical twins showing high concordance for the diagnosis and related traits and approximately 20% of all ASD cases having an identified genetic mechanism."

(from this article)

:what:I can't get past the possibility that the mother may have left the killer home alone for a day or two or whatever the time frame was. I mean :banghead: why leave a mentally challenged/maybe violent person alone??

I wonder if Nancy had someone...anyone... who she could have called to check on her son or even stay with her son?

imo

While I realize that caretakers really NEED that time away, it also bothers me that he was left alone. Even if she fixed his meals and he could put them in the microwave, you can STILL get burned by a microwave..(i have done it plenty of times.)

I really doubt that anyone came to check on him, they didn't allow anyone inside their home, did they?

I think Axxx's alleged high IQ was an excuse used by Nancy for why she had to homeschool Axxx. I think this story has the same purpose as the story that she was looking for a college for Axxx to attend in Washington State when she was looking for a residential school to help with his mental problems.

I hope we will hear what the school recommended (or school board, one article said). I have to wonder if not doing so well in college courses wasn't really depressing for someone like Adam. It's possible if he just studied on area or field, he could have excelled? I don't know, but maybe he realized that's not all college is about too.

Someone once said:
If you're raising a disabled child, learn to clothe yourself with humility.

Trying to pretend that your child is normal and/or trying to force the child to fit in can be very painful and damaging. Humbly accept that they are disabled and help them be the best that they can be.

Flashman was told Nancy Lanza had begun filing paperwork to get conservatorship over her troubled son, but that could not be confirmed because a court official told FoxNews.com such records are sealed. The move would have been necessary for her to gain the legal right to commit an adult to a hospital or psychiatric facility against his will. A competency hearing had not yet been held.
Adam Lanza attended the Sandy Hook School as a boy, according to Flashman, who said Nancy Lanza had volunteered there for several years. Two law enforcement sources said they believed Nancy Lanza had been volunteering with kindergartners at the school. Most of Lanza's victims were first graders sources believe Nancy Lanza may have worked with last year.
Flashman said Nancy Lanza was also good friends with the school’s principal and psychologist—both of whom were killed in the shooting rampage.

I would love to know how "he" got his brothers ID, how long he had that ID, and if the innocent brother had reported that he had lost his ID.

I tend to really disagree with all t his. I do think perhaps the approach taken may not have helped and even made things worse - not that there is a perfect parent or approach. It think this kid walled walled inside himself and what we hear otherwise was earlier on. I'm having a difficult time reconciling what you say was pandering to a child for years then all of a sudden saying, you're a man, you need to make it on your own.

Teaching a kid to drive (we think), getting him a car, and teaching him to shoot guns does not make you into a self sufficient adult. It appears because of some terminology int he divorce that the parents were fully aware this could be a lifelong commitment and his mom didn't even want him cooking while she was away for days - if he can't cook when he's living with someone, how can he take care of himself?

Someone said this earlier, but I agree that possibly Adam was more recently diagnosed. That could be why he was trying to burn himself to see if he felt pain. It seems obvious he had problems for a while. Although I think if any one parent/caregiver turns into the sole contact and provider for someone, it can easily get dysfunctional.

At any rate, I don't care if I am wrong about this, I just hope we get more information. This is the first case I have seen with all these elements possibly contributing.

For me, personally it has nothing to do with my being "wrong" in any opinion that I express on any case as I look at this great place where we can within TOS offer what we see throughout the life of a case and being honest about what we personally believe that could be the dynamics of what led to such a tragedy, and in ths case specifically a tragedy beyond what my mind can even comprehend.. but when I am putting forth my opinion in a post in any case my motivation is never about a need to be the right or winning theory that comes to light in the end.. I am simply voicing how I, personally see the information and situation as we know at the present time..

Onto the point stated above that I believe there was some cut off of this individual as you mention above as if its just as cut and dry as.. coddled one day, and be a man the next..<---that IS NOT WHAT I BELIEVE HAPPENED AT ALL!

In fact I believe this mom was as gently as humanly possible attempting to possibly begin to push her son toward individual functioning and succeeding on some level for himself... MY GOD this woman was not only going the distance in attempting to find the right school, right element for her son to begin working toward making something of himself..to the point this mom was willing to pick up and move to whatever area that they found he could best begin to hopefully flourish in...this mom was in no way whatsoever saying, GET OUT, YOURE CUT OFF, BE A MAN..

THIS MOTHER IMO WAS ATTEMPTING TO AS LOVINGLY AND GENTLY PUSH THIS INDIVIDUAL TOWARDS A POSITIVE FUTURE THAN WORDS CAN EXPLAIN.. SHE WAS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ATTEMPT TO HELP TRANSITION HIM TOWARD WHAT SHE HOPED WOULD BE A MORE FULFILLING LIFE AND IN THE MOST LOVING WAY IMAGINABLE...

HE IMO DIDNT WANT ANY PART OF IT..

but do not mistake my saying this woman was in any way at fault in her somehow, suddenly cutting him off AND saying now be a man... that's not my thoughts nor opinion, nor is it what I said..

James Radley Mattioli, 6 ¾

James loved to dive off the diving board at the Treadwell Pool, swim like a fish in both of his grandparents’ pools and ride his bike, proudly without training wheels. He often said, “I need to go outside Mom, I need fresh air.” He spent endless hours playing hockey with his best bud and cousin, George.

James was born four weeks early at Bridgeport Hospital. It was an ongoing quip that James came into the world early because he was hungry. He loved hamburgers with ketchup, his Dad’s egg omelets with bacon, and his Mom’s French toast. He often asked to stop at Subway for dinner for a ham sandwich, and wanted to know how old he needed to be to order a footlong sandwich.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in James’ memory to the James R. Mattioli Memorial Fund, c/o Newtown Savings Bank, 39 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470

I took my kids to subway for lunch today. And today, my six year old boy got a footlong.
On the other side of the world, our hearts are bleeding for you all. x

Yep....

Oh, wow. Great conclusion, you guys! If he attended that school, they would be called to testify in his competency hearing. That would be why he chose THAT school.

Makes sense doesn't it if that turns out to be the case .... almost too much sense.

Since when do you need conservatorship to commit. As an ER nurse, I find this incorrect. Unless Conn. law is different. The qualifying factor is that one is found to be a threat to himself or others. Unless, there were no threats perhaps the issue was drug use. Then I would suspect she would need conservatorship. I will
wait for the drug screen to come back. That will be more telling.

Really? Elementary school officials would have been called to the competency hearing for a 20 year old?

(Not saying you're wrong. I'm genuinely curious about how they do this.)

I don't think R ever lost his ID. He might have gotten a new one (moved out of state), and left the old one at his mom's home, with all his other "childhood posessions". AL was under 21 - having an older brothers id is a golden ticket. For what- I don't know. It just is.

what about long term care? (as a nurse that also makes sense to me)
