Henry, wrt to Dr. C., atm does the fault lie with a reactionary response rather than proactive, in Western countries?
IMO....no one wants to responsible in closing a city or area and starting a free fall in the markets.....so they down play...like Cuomo today.
Keep in mind that China began shutting things down at 1000 cases...

#COVID19 #coronavirus cases are being reported in a number of US states now. It is worth understanding that this is not an abrupt burst of domestic spread. The disease has been here for a while. This is a consequence of finally starting to test people for it.

Yes. Easy to have low numbers when you aren't testing.

I've heard that the CDC website was reporting the number of tests but has since removed that information from the site. Anyone have info about that?

Italy coronavirus cases now total 1,835 people

From CNN's Valentina Di Donato in Rome

The number of coronavirus cases in Italy climbed to 1,835, with 52 deaths reported so far, according to an update from the country’s Civil Protection Authority on Monday.

More on this: Italy has the most coronavirus cases of any country outside of Asia.

In Lombardy, the northern Italian region at the center of the country's outbreak, 1 in 10 of confirmed coronavirus cases involve medical personnel, according to Paola Stringa, a press officer for the Lombardy regional government.

(note: 1 in 10 are medical personnel )

I missed that link. Do you have it handy?

Did you watch the press conference? The first US death was a wonderful woman, it was a man, we have a vaccine in the works, a vaccine will take 18 months, only old sick people die, a 40 year old healthy man died, on and on. It was a continuous contradiction.

I added the link and I watched the presser.

Here's the link again

Dr. Anthony Fauci: I’m not being muzzled

ETA: I should say "a" link. The link to the entire presser is elsewhere in the thread

Yes, I agree, I was so surprised at Cuomo's attitude. He seemed so low key and so did the others in the news conference. One lady who spoke stressed that people should just keep everything as business as usual. Take the subway, ride the bus, etc. Just business as usual. Nothing to see here.

Dr Fauci may not be muzzled but there is sure some hinky crap going on at the CDC at the moment...a once proud federal agency but hey it looks like the states are going to have to do it on their own. I guess those states rights folk have gotten what they wanted.

British Airways has cancelled a string of transatlantic flights from London to America due to wide-spread coronavirus fears.

The airline says it is reducing the volume of flights because less people want to travel amid growing concerns about coronavirus - which has spread to 50 countries world wide.

BA has grounded 24 flights between Heathrow and New York's JFK airport and will waive flight-change fees for people who book within the next two weeks, amid uncertainty about the spread of the virus.

King county presser notes...ETA's to follow from Public Health - Seattle & King County on Twitter .

  • They are in final stages of purchasing a hotel for isolation by the end of the week
  • Setting up modular locations, including Seattle which were former oil worker/homeless complexes
  • 14 similar units.. all can house over 100 people.
  • Others under approval for isolation and recovery.
  • Save masks for health care workers, not recommended generally for healthy people (e.d. yes, truth, vs. just don't use!)
  • 2 died, one more also .. so far...14 and 5 deaths (e.d. the list of all of them/ages/gender going to quickly, cannot capture in notes.. wait for later folks)
  • 17 CDC members there for infection control and tracing (e.d. they know this is a oh chit moment in history)
  • The risk for all of us will be increasing
  • Potential for many to be ill at the same time, this will be disruptive. We need to minimize the impact to our health care system to do individual steps. basic hand hygiene, less face touching, don't go to work or school, notify doc. Look at lists for pandemic preparedness now. ... much more stated.....
  • We want to give info so you can make decisions for yourself
  • Avoid crowds, esp older and with underlying conditions... same measures of flu
  • Not recommending all avoid, but to give out to those to make individual risk benefits for themselves. there is benefit to social gatherings. this infection is with us. if you are susceptible, you might want to take steps to avoid this virus
  • don't go to er unless you need to. they need to be for critical, contact health provider vs. going to er.
  • we aren't recommending school closures at this time.
  • update on statewide situation.... now starting to find more in WA that are locally acquired. Is actively spreading. 18 cases id's...14 cases and 5 deaths in king county. Given movement, possible in other counties too. working to increase. 200/day is limit right now for testing. we are looking at other private labs to test. Univ of Washington is going to start testing today or tomorrow. additional testing will allow to see risk. we are committed to telling you results so you can make decisions on your health.
  • .............covers personal things to do which we have discussed... do not touch eyes, mouth, face etc..
  • If you are sick... we know you feel responsible.. may be difficult not to go to work .. we need to do all we can to protect others
  • You can consider avoiding public settings, esp older and with chronic conditions.
  • re preparedness... make sure food/med at home.. what you would need for child care...telework/sick leave technology for work.
  • Individuals still need to make personal decisions. we will give you info to make that decision
  • most have mild illness, but many have more.. so we are working on it.
  • we started testing covid last week per cdc. when alerted to cases, they went into monitoring and precautions. 10 confirmed at Evergreen, 6 of those cases have died. One Shokomas (?sp) county pt another person corrected... only 5 in king county. (e.d. disagreement on the dais) 6 deaths at Evergreen. 29 cases pending investigation, and waiting results. They are in airborne precaution units (RUT ROW!!! sorry for the mix up in transcribe...but that's what was just said... Doc just was taken out that he let out 6 deaths which others on the panel didn't know, they only knew five so they are .. he's handing off now...ooops)
  • We are still trying to contain. And now to show how to mitigate.
  • *They are now handing out a press release to the audience*........
Q&A
  • This disease is new.......... ....... pts having serious illness are old or have underlying chronic diseases.
  • This disease will stress resources for surges. e.g. beds and equipment. impossible to predict when peak will happen, we want to blunt the peak. Our hospitals are already feeling the strain. We don't know how to predict supply/demand
  • ? How many related to life care facility A . 8 cases and 4 deaths. One additional death unrelated to lifecare.
  • re 100 housing.. is enough? A. We need to look at hospital capacity for folks who need treatment. we are trying to look at real estate for such.
  • we may move resources from other places
  • changes in testing... what changed with cdc tests..what happened. A. when testing became available, was limited so we had to prioritize. the guidance we followed was the most serious that had no other explanation or had a risk factor. as more testing capacity is available, we can now test those that aren't critically ill. last week we found that virus has been in community . and we are going to find in mild folks and univ of Washington now online it will be like flu testing. this disease will need to be managed like the flu. we need to protect those that are most .. and to limit the numbers that enter hospitals until epidemic passes. some will be due to cases that are already y here, and some that are in the future.
  • active discussion of community mitigation guidance on limiting community venues and activities... we'll be look at that based on results and severity of disease. Much of it is disruptive, so we have to weigh risks and benefits to implement. We can't prevent the outbreak, we need to work to reduce. We'll know more in the next two weeks. We can't expect folks to do for months. that the public thinks it is worth it in the face of uncertainty. we are going to be making decisions benefit/risks are not clear at this point.
  • re parents looking for school closures.. A. We are getting lots of calls on such. the schools have authority to do so. we are working with them to assess level of risk. we don't have an outbreak linked, when that happens we will............?????......... we are setting up a call center today as we have superintendents or teachers or health care worker that were able to give them the best advice. this will evolve. Call center at the state level 8005250127 is covid hotline for the state.
  • Q ? A. CDC is supporting lifecare staff. if pts need to be hospitalized they will be. there are still 50 there...
  • re 6 deaths... where did they happen???? (e.d. the doctor outed something that the rest didn't know... so they are ???) A. We will provide additional clarity later, (e.d. he's not knowledgeable).. We will follow up with you..
  • state lab is doing 200 tests / day... up to 1,000 / day in near future.
  • reason for differences in totals and deaths are that it takes time to get from hospital to health dept to us... and you are seeing at the bottom vs. what we are here.
ETA: I just received a text alert from king county.... that says 4 new cases, bringing overall total to 14. Guess the texts are also behind what has just been released to the press.

THE END
