"Italy could be a sign of what is to come." More testing is done there and therefore numbers are more reflective of reality. Only countries testing vigorously are China, South Korea, Italy and Iran. The 107,000 reported cases globally are probably not accurate because of lack of testing.

BBM How ironic that the name of the show is AMJoy. (I just looked it up and it's named after it's anchor, but still how horribly ironic). Just waking up and 40 pages have gone by. Wow!

Frankly, most Americans had good reason to feel “exceptional “ in that sense. Our government and systems did take care of things as went along our merry ways. Our government has been systematically dismantled over the past few years, replacing experts with folks who will bow down to our leader.
Never in my life did I think I would have to question the CDC because of WH interferes... but here we are.

I agree- i think they are afraid of getting fired- pathetic.

People with pre-existing conditions are working as well. If I have a pre-existing condition, I can't just stay home and not go to work. Who is going to pay me stay home?

I am starting to think that testing very few people is not just incompetence, but actually on purpose. What you don't know is not going to hurt you. By the way people are comparing US to China-China actually tested many people, while US so far tested very few.

I'm rather in a state of mourning over that, the dismantling of the CDC, one of our flagship agencies, looked up to by the world...but nope, we don't need govt, starve that beast...hubris, that is what the US suffers from and our leader most of all...and he probably doesn't even know what the word means...

In their situation I might rather be fired...I think they are staying on out of a sense of duty...as my son says I would be afraid if I quit that I would be replaced by someone incompetent...

Yes, and now the cruise companies are offering deeply discounted rates. What a deal, cheap cruise, guarantee of the best medical care, free meals, and around the clock medical access, and private jet service to a protected government base.

The powers to be need to put an end to this. Make a statement, we ain't coming to get you, if you CHOSE to get on a cruise ship, especially when the industry is enticing new business.

Leaked coronavirus plan to quarantine 16m sparks chaos in Italy
Italy has been plunged into chaos after details of a plan to quarantine more than 16 million people in the north amid an escalating coronavirus outbreak were leaked to the press, sending thousands into panic as they tried to flee south.

The whole of Lombardy, including its financial capital of Milan, and 14 provinces across the worst-affected northern regions, have been shut down until 3 April as Italy grapples to contain the spread of a virus as deaths rose from 233 to 366, with 6,387 current cases overall.

Thousands crowded train stations in Lombardy or jumped into their cars after details of a draft decree banning people from leaving or entering the region were revealed by Corriere della Sera late on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday morning dozens of police officers and medics wearing masks and hazmat suits waited in Salerno, in Campania, for passengers who had boarded overnight trains from Lombardy. The passengers will be registered and obliged to self-quarantine as fears mount over the virus’s spread in the south.

The US is up to 469 confirmed cases of covid-19 and that is with very limited testing. 8 have recovered and the mortality rate remains at 19.

I am absolutely with you on the cruise ships...you bought it, you chose to take the risk and now you want the rest of us to bring you back home and strain our medical services even more? Where is all that personal responsibility people like to expound on...

Because, in this case, it would be "corporate responsibility". That is anathema in the United States. In the middle of this health crisis, CEO'S in Florida want a personal meeting with Pence, and he is there. They didn't have to even leave Miami. I noticed Marco Rubio in the corner as well.

These cruise ships are not even registered in the United States. So, why has it become a problem for the United States? I am all about helping our own citizens. But, all of the other passengers as well?

I don't know....let's say bottleneck for serious tests that need to be done....

NEW: Testing for the novel coronavirus will get a huge boost in the coming weeks as a project funded by Bill Gates and his foundation begins offering home-testing kits that will allow people to swab their noses and send the samples back for analysis. Gates-funded program will soon offer home-testing kits for new coronavirus

Although some will say commercialism, I think this is a great thing. I wonder who they are partnering with to allow this to be covered by insurance or how it will work. What is the cost? Are they doing sputum samples as I doube that many folks at home could do/know how to do a pharyngeal test correctly as it is hard to do MOO, and we don't want false negatives. If anyone could do this, Bill can. Bill and Melinda have focused on infectious diseases of such from day 1. This is their day.

As an aside, they have invested in some things also that may make money, so conspiracy theorists will be all over this at some time.

I say this is a good thing, and applaud them. It's going to be very very interesting to follow. If anyone has updates as this progresses, will be appreciative to share when you find.

The number of known coronavirus cases in the United States continues to grow rapidly. As of Sunday afternoon, at least 450 people have been treated for coronavirus in 33 states and Washington, D.C., according to a New York Times database, and at least 19 patients with the virus have died.

The pace of diagnosis has quickened in recent days, with 117 new cases announced Saturday. The virus is now spreading within communities on both coasts, including in California, New York and Washington State, where doctors have detected dozens of new cases in recent days.

I do hope they can find some antiviral medications that exist already and work. Too long to wait for the vaccine. We already have some antiviral meds for other diseases. If they work I hope they are approved fast.

The reason I say bottleneck is because we have an issue with the sheer number of tests that can be processed in a lab. So if a home test is done, who is processing, confirming and prioritizing tests....
