That’s good news. I wonder what will happen to the infected crew who likely are not from the U.S. What a scary situation for them.

#COVID19 is now a part of our world and things are different. Things will get back close to the old normal only when most people have immunity. We have two ways to get immunity - natural infection or vaccination, but vaccines don't yet exist. (1/n)

It may be then that most of us will acquire immunity via natural infection, but I do not accept that. I think it is worth the most incredible coordinated human effort to create slightly different societies in which the virus cannot spread widely. (2/n)

China, HK and Singapore have already created those societies. It may be that they cannot maintain the current status, but that's not the point. As of now, based on current rates of infection, only a very small proportion of these populations will be infected in 18 months.

Everywhere else needs to adopt the same strategy. We can either try now or we can try when the healthcare system falls over. But we will have to try.

Strategy does not equal policy. The strategy is to acheive ongoing control. Policies will vary and rapid innovation is required.

Yes. They are such hard working staff, and I remember reading that the cruise line will compensate them for quarantine and time off post ordeal, but what a life changing event when you are uncertain of your job security as well.

Cruises going to bring down a way of society....

BREAKING NEWS: The first case of novel coronavirus is being reported in Fresno County. Earlier today Madera County also confirmed their first case. Health officials say both victims tested positive after returning from Princess Cruise ships. The latest on @ABC30 at 8 Gilbert Magallon on Twitter

These are people from the previous voyage of the Grand Princess (not the Diamond Princess) most likely, like the man that died up in Northern Cal.
In other words, this is a warning on how long this has been circulating.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A cruise ship hit by the new coronavirus is headed to the port of Oakland, California, the captain told passengers, though they were destined to stay aboard the ship for at least another day.

Grand Princess Capt. John Smith, in a recording provided by passenger Laurie Miller of San Jose, told guests the ship will dock in Oakland. Princess Cruises says it's expected to arrive on Monday. The ship is carrying more than 3,500 people from 54 countries.

“An agreement has been reached to bring our ship into the port of Oakland,” he told passengers Saturday night. “After docking, we will then begin a disembarkation process specified by federal authorities that will take several days."

Smith said passengers who need medical treatment or hospitalization will go to health care facilities in California, while state residents who don’t require acute medical care “will go to a federally operated isolation facility within California for testing and isolation.”

U.S. guests from other states will be transported by the federal government to facilities in other states. Crew members will be quarantined and treated aboard the ship.

Smith said the information he was given did not include any details about what would happen to passengers from other countries.

“We are working to obtain more details overnight. ... I’m sorry I can’t provide you more details right now,” he said.
