There are now more than 140 coronavirus cases in New York

New York has 142 confirmed coronavirus cases, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday morning. That number is up from the 106 previously reported.

Westchester: 98
NYC: 19
Nassau: 17
Rockland: 4
Saratoga: 2
Suffolk: 1
Ulster: 1
We continue to expect more positive cases as we test.

Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, has tested positive for the coronavirus. Cotton is under quarantine and his senior team will be tested and placed under quarantine.

Gov. Cuomo also issued guidance for schools in New Rochelle saying, in part, they could be closed for weeks. For all schools across the state, if a student tests positive, that school has to be closed for an initial 24-hour period until it can be investigated.

University of Tennessee scientists use supercomputer, may have found coronavirus cure
''Two researchers the University of Tennessee in Knoxville have discovered a chemical compound that, if it passes more testing, could be the cure to stop coronavirus and prevent it from spreading.

According to WATE-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee, the two researchers have been working on the possible cure by using the "world's most powerful computer" through a partnership between the University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The computer, known as 'Summit', works as fast as 100,000 laptops at the same time.

“It’s capable of doing calculations very, very, quickly. The response to the new coronavirus needs to be quick,” said Jeremy Smith, Director of the Center for Molecular Biophysics.''

FIRST CORONA DEATH HITS AFRICA WITH TOURIST FATALITY

Egyptian authorities confirmed Africa’s first COVID-19 fatality after a 60-year-old German tourist died of the deadly virus.

It is also the first German confirmed death.

Egypt’s Ministry of Health said in a statement: “The 60-year-old German citizen showed symptoms of a fever (and) checked into Hurghada hospital on 6th March.”

The man reportedly arrived in the country from Germany one week ago.

Trump campaign 'proceeding normally,' but no rallies scheduled

There are few things President Trump says he enjoys more than a large-scale rally with thousands of cheering supporters. And while he has pledged to keep up the pace amid concerns about large gathering as the coronavirus outbreak intensifies, his re-election campaign has not announced any upcoming rallies for the weeks ahead, marking the first time without one on the calendar this year.

The campaign maintains it is “proceeding normally” and simply hasn’t made any future plans public. “We will announce rallies when we are ready to do so," principal deputy communications director Erin Perrine told NBC News. "President Trump had a town hall this week, a fundraiser, and we have loads of campaign events on the event schedule on the website.”

Those “events” are mostly smaller gatherings for volunteer trainings but there is one “Women for Trump” event on the books with Second Lady Karen Pence next week in Pennsylvania.

When asked at the CDC on Friday whether he’d considered not having rallies due to coronavirus fears, the president told reporters: “No, I haven’t.” He doubled down on that over the weekend, when he said he expects “tremendous rallies” to take place but did not offer any specifics beyond that.

“We're doing very well. And we've done a fantastic job with respect to that subject on the virus,” Trump added.

For weeks, the president has maintained that mass gatherings are “very safe.”

Trump campaign 'proceeding normally,' but no rallies scheduled

My thought is a delay in scheduling rallies would be due to a fear that too few would show up leading to an “embarrassing” turn out, rather than a concern about people transmitting the virus.

But given that our politicians are mostly over 50, and thus have to be concerned, regardless of stunts with gas masks mocking the virus, they’re going to start to change their behaviors. And this should impact how governments and the public react to this crises.

In other news I have a hearing this afternoon. The hearing itself should be quick but the courthouse is always packed and we have to sit there for at least an hour before we can be heard. Just because of the volume of cases and pace of proceedings. Especially with this judge who talks A LOT.

So I’m scared. I’m very worried about having to be in that crowd not knowing how many people could be infected because we don’t have testing occurring as it should.

P.S. We now have three confirmed cases in my county.

Amazon changes warehouse worker policy for March

Amazon has told its warehouse employees that they can take sick days in March without counting toward their unpaid time off.

The change comes as labor experts have warned that hourly workers and those without sick leave could be at higher risk of both catching the coronavirus and suffering severe financial repercussions as a result.

It just depends on who these people are listening to. The federal government has buckled down yet again saying it's contained, that you can't get from shaking hands, you should only be cautious of you're old and/or medically challenged..etc..etc.

Iran releases 70,000 prisoners as toll rises: Live updates
''Iran temporarily released about 70,000 prisoners because of the coronavirus contagion, as the death toll rose by 43 new fatalities to 237.

In Italy, where some 16 million people in Lombardy and other parts of the north are now under quarantine, there were 133 deaths reported, bringing the total to 366. More than 7,000 people in the country have been confirmed to have the virus.

More than 3,800 people have died worldwide from coronavirus and there are about 109,000 infections.''

Twenty-seven people have died from methanol poisoning in Iran after rumours that drinking alcohol can help cure the novel coronavirus infection, state news agency IRNA reported.

A spokesman for Jundishapur medical university in Ahvaz, the capital of Khuzestan, said 218 people had been hospitalised there after being poisoned. The poisonings were caused by "rumours that drinking alcohol can be effective in treating coronavirus," Ali Ehsanpour said.

Amid virus crisis, officials announce health care tech rules

With coronavirus topping Americans’ concerns, senior Trump administration officials tried to switch subjects Monday by announcing final rules aimed at delivering on the unfulfilled promise of electronic health records.

“The notion that we can’t do our day jobs and work on this very serious issue (coronavirus) is absurd,” said a frustrated Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar after one reporter noted that financial markets had opened sharply lower over fears of global economic damage resulting from the outbreak.

Azar recapped administration actions to try to contain the spread of the virus here, develop tests and vaccines, work with state and local governments in areas that are seeing outbreaks, and care for those who have gotten sick.

As to the new health care technology rules, it could take several years for consumers and patients to start seeing the practical effects. The long-awaited rules are intended to get at one of the major problems with electronic health records: the systems of hospitals and doctors often don’t ‘talk’ to each other, and patients struggle to get their medical information digitally transmitted, defaulting to CDs and faxed paper records.

New York subway: Commuting in the time of coronavirus in the nation's largest transit system - CNN
''Crowded trains each weekday carry more than 5 million people hardened by terror threats and track-dwelling rats, daylight assaults and diluvial water main breaks. COVID-19 is their latest worry.
"I do think they are potentially at risk because you're in close quarters and sometimes you can't escape if somebody is really near you and the train is packed," said Gershon, a native New Yorker.
On Sunday, Mayor Bill de Blasio urged some New Yorkers to avoid the subway. He called for employers to stagger work hours for employees to ease overcrowding.

"If you're sick, you shouldn't be going on the subway," he told reporters.
"If you are traveling by subway and the train that comes up is all packed and you can possibly wait for the next train in the hopes it might be less packed, please do," the mayor added. "We've all been sardines in the subway. If you have the option of walking or biking to work, please do that."
Transit system undergoes a deep cleaning
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that runs the subway, buses and commuter rails, last week announced it was using bleach and other disinfectants recommended by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to scour all equipment in the system every 72 hours.
The major cleaning includes 472 subway stations, 21 stations on Staten Island Railway, 124 stations and terminals on the Long Island Rail Road and 101 Metro-North stations.''
