'Do we really want to close schools? “If kids are not getting infected and they’re not getting sick, then the last thing you want to do is shut down a school," said Osterholm, citing data that only 2.1% of China coronavirus cases were among those under 20. 'Do we really want to close schools?' U.S. authorities resist coronavirus closures

Does this need more thought re children as transient carriers or asymptomatic carriers - also very recent research re children getting infected from large sampling outside Wuhan.

It's not likely that schools will shut down for months and months. Precautionary closings for even a couple weeks is something that could make a big difference.

After days of advocating the federal gov't to expand #Coronavirus testing capacity, we just received word that Northwell Laboratories has been authorized to test.
Manual testing of 75-80 samples/day will begin at Northwell immediately. Andrew Cuomo on Twitter

Yes, close them down, IMO, in areas affected by CV. There is too much we don’t know about how it is spread, but apparently some can spread it without exhibiting symptoms themselves.

I don’t know about schools in other areas but all the school systems in the county where I live use online classes as an option when school is closed. Instead of snow days as previously had to be made up, teachers provide online classes.

"The results showed that SARS coronavirus in the testing condition could survive in serum, 1:20 diluted sputum and feces for at least 96 h, whereas it could remain alive in urine for at least 72 h with a low level of infectivity. The survival abilities on the surfaces of eight different materials and in water were quite comparable, revealing reduction of infectivity after 72 to 96 h exposure. Viruses stayed stable at 4 degrees C, at room temperature (20 degrees C) and at 37 degrees C for at least 2 h without remarkable change in the infectious ability in cells, but were converted to be non-infectious after 90-, 60- and 30-min exposure at 56 degrees C, at 67 degrees C and at 75 degrees C, respectively. Irradiation of UV for 60 min on the virus in culture medium resulted in the destruction of viral infectivity at an undetectable level.

The survival ability of SARS coronavirus in human specimens and in environments seems to be relatively strong. Heating and UV irradiation can efficiently eliminate the viral infectivity."

has there been any study on FLIES and
Mosquitos spreading the disease in warmer
areas??
This year we've not had enough cold to kill flies
in my area. Mosquitos too.

Schools are community gathering places where large numbers of people are in proximity to one another and respiratory infections can easily spread among young people and adults alike. Shutting them down can be a key part of slowing the spread of easily transmissible viruses so that hospitals are not overrun with sick people, and it can help to buy time to allow for the development of antiviral medications, medical treatments or a vaccine.

But policymakers working to stop the spread of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 should remember a key part of this historically informed equation: We can’t wait until it’s too late.

A new concern:
With the test kits finally arriving in labs, we enter a new phase.
Now, we are finding a shortage of a critical component required for the test to run (RNA extraction kits).
These commercial kits are quickly becoming out of stock. @QIAGEN @CDCgov
Michael Mina on Twitter

We can have all of the test kits we need, but they rely on our ability to get the RNA out of a sample first, for testing.
As this epidemic becomes in full swing, many additional reagents or parts that we never usually question the availability of may become difficult to find.

SEOUL, March 9 (Reuters) - Germany and France withdrew their representatives from North Korea and closed their missions on Monday, the British ambassador there said, amid growing concern in the isolated country about the spread of the coronavirus.

I agree with the second tweet, I think we should be cautious until we know more. We don't really know why so few children turned up in the massive study done in China, all we know is that of the few children who did turn up in it, there were low rates of death and more severe illness.

But what if there are some behavioural things behind the smaller number of infected children in the study? What if the number of babies and toddlers was low because people often keep young babies indoors and away from sick adults when they're babies?

What if there are lower rates in children because China acted fast to close the schools and there are far more one-child families in China?
