I'm confused about these numbers in the US, perhaps just a news reporting error?

Court blocks plan to send up to 50 evacuated American coronavirus patients to California facility | Daily Mail Online

DM says there are 50 American coronavirus patients evacuated from the Diamond Princess ship, yet the totals listed at CDC show only 14 US patients, NYT says 35. What gives? The CDC site is terrible, it gives very little information.

Coronavirus Map: Tracking the Spread of the Outbreak

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

I really feel For these crew members. They've been working their butts off all these weeks knowing that they could get sick. I certainly hope that the cruise line is going to take very good care of them!!!

I had missed something before on this... What a jump back up we have now that all the evacs are done! They tested the crew, who were going door to door etc around the ship last SMDH

Tracking coronavirus: Map, data and timeline
57 new cases in Japan. They were found on the “Diamond Princess” cruise ship off Yokohama, raising the ship’s total to 691. Among the new cases are 55 crew members and 2 passengers. Both passengers and 50 of the crew members are asymptomatic. (Source)

Through google translate of the source document at 横浜港で検疫中のクルーズ船内で確認された新型コロナウイルス感染症について(2月23日公表分) it says:

"About new coronavirus infection confirmed on cruise ship during quarantine at Yokohama Port (published on February 23)
ク ル ー ズ The cruise ship Diamond Princess, which arrived at Yokohama Port on February 3, is undergoing quarantine at sea.
Samples were collected between February 19 and February 21, and the results of the PCR tests were as follows.

1) crew
Of the 819 samples for which the results were found, 55 were positive (including 50 asymptomatic pathogen carriers).

2) Passengers
Of the 12 specimens for which the results were found, 2 were positive (of which 2 were symptomatic pathogen carriers)."

Look at the number of asymptomatic crew members closely above. Are they self reporting correctly, or do we assume those number are true and accurate. Scary as CHIT if this is a true reflection. That's only 10% symptomatic and 90% asymptomatic?

Again, was self reporting (and possible anti cough/anti pyretics used by crew members) low due to they didn't want to either "get in trouble" or lose their jobs?

This type of potential as to denial of symptoms MOO is going to be widespread. Imagine if you didn't think it was a big deal, but you and your family would loose your house/income etc so you might lie?

Imagine this coming to areas near you where laborers who live "hand to mouth" already and have to work every day to pay their rent, vs. folks that have 6 months of life savings for bills in their accounts.

Yeah, I can imagine dishonest reporting, and hiding facts.

ETA: Also, folks who are low income may or may not even have health care. So they may avoid self reporting as who is going to pay for all those tests and CAT scans and lung xrays to just diagnose etc? They will hope they are the mild cases, so not report?

They're not trained in medicine, so they're having to trust their bosses that whatever they're doing to protect themselves will work. Sad situation.

Let’s sleuth the cruise ship itineraries coming into Venice in recent days / weeks.

ETA: Iirc, UK South Hampton is a major port...of course there are many.

I’m very curious now other about Cruise ships arriving in the US, Florida, Etc etc.

I have to take off, but will check back in a few hours. Can't recall, but I've seen a site where you can check on those departures/arrivals.

<respectfully snipped>
I do too. I feel like a bit of a fool being concerned as I am, but I don't discuss outside of family, and here. WHO said a couple of days ago that the window to contain the outbreak was narrowing, since then South Korea, Italy and Iran are independent hotspots.

Some people think the virus is a non-thing, but post secondary institutions have been implementing a strategy for the last 6 weeks. I expect that everyone, such as global governments, are hoping for the best while preparing for the worst.

No otto.
Far better to be concerned and prepared than oblivious, as most.
And the worst case scenario about preparedness, well you won't have to grocery shop for a while, have that extra cash in a ziploc sitting for 10 days and your hands might be a little chafed from using all that hand sanitizer.

Public service announcement for my websleuths friends here. Remember in the first thread where I said that I was going to do a virtual doctor visit through my healthcare provider which is B**e C***s . A very common one which has virtual doctors through their Network that you have to get the app. Most of the healthcare providers have, and I had never used until last month thinking about this situation.

Anyway, last month my visit to the virtual doctor was $10, versus much much more which my doctor would be and I would have to wait two days, or go to the emergency clinic which would be much much more and take much of my time. Anyway, I just did it today. Look at what the screenshot was of one of the questions that I had to go through. It asked me if I had been to Asia before I could meet with an online doctor. That definitely was not there in January when I called as a question.

They are on top of it. My virtual visit today that got another prescription without having to go to the doctor as I normally do every 6 months was just $10.

You know those conditions that we keep seeing that are bad for this - I have one listed in addition to being over 60 years old.

So if you get to the point where you want to avoid going to the doctor and getting infected by others, this is a suggestion to consider.

I've been quietly prepping. I have always had a good pantry, and am upping my stock of dry beans, rice, canned veg, etc.

One thing peeps may find helpful ~ there are bleach pills. Evolve is the brand name I have. Easy to store, last forever, and you can control the % of the bleach solution.

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bleach+tablets&crid=4K09VMULGEV3&sprefix=bleach,aps,307&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_5_6
Thanks for the info on the bleach pills. I went to the dollar store and bought several gallons of bleach but the tablets will be much more convenient.
Like you, I always have a good supply of canned and dry goods. I also have basic first aid supplies. I live in earthquake country and never know when I will need them. My fear right now is that in the event the U.S. is hit by the virus, the availability of many items will be scant to none. Both because people will be in a panic to buy but also because of shortages due to the virus is countries that produce such goods.
I already went to Costco and purchased another large bottle of Ibuprofen. I have an abundant supply of masks (which I also would need for an earthquake as I'm asthmatic and there would be a great deal of dust). I also have extra medications for my asthma. I'll refill all my prescriptions as soon as they are available for refill.
My plan is to also purchase other basic medications and also a supply of medical gloves. I'll be buying basics like cough drops, cold/flu medications, Imodium, Maalox and whatever else I think of that may not be on the shelves if and when this hits. I think the idea of having cash on hand in small bills is also very important.

I'm curious what types of things others are buying?

ETA: I also bought a supply of these medical grade wipes on amazon that another poster here shared:

I bet they are worried about their job security too. I imagine this disaster could a downturn in cruise passenger numbers with people not wanting to risk their health.

So, as we say, color me confused.....
The verbiage in the court filing yesterday from Contra Mesa County (San Diego) seems really odd to me. They were trying to prevent a bunch of people the Feds were wanting to relocate. So here is what the document literally says:

“Relocate from 35-50 people already diagnosed with coronavirus from a secure location on Travis Airforce Base”

Costa Mesa accuses feds of plan to move coronavirus evacuees ‘under the cover of darkness’

Is that just misleading wordage? 35-50 people already diagnosed? The entire US currently has only 34 total confirmed cases correct?

I don’t understand o_O

My understanding is they wanted to quarantine mild cases that had come from the ship to that location.

Betcha a dollar to a donut (southern saying), we will be posting a lot of crazy CA headlines when it breaks there......

There's been criticism of the governments possibly prioritizing the economy over the health of citizens, but it is a lot more complex and difficult. A huge number of people live paycheck to paycheck, and aren't able to stock up or otherwise prepare. What happens to those people? The government could provide emergency food supplies, but those have to be obtained and distributed which means the people in the supply chains have to still be working. Likewise for supplies for hospital, people need to be at work to manufacture, sell, and distribute those supplies. It sounds so easy, just shut everything down for two weeks, but there would be enormous hardships from doing so. Two weeks of lost income will mean a lot of businesses will not survive, which will have further impact on their employees.

The coronavirus isn't just a health danger, there's also a very good chance of a global economic depression. And that will impact everyone, whether they get sick or not.

Two doctors die of coronavirus within 24 hours in China's Hubei province as tributes pour in for 'hero' medics

A 42-year-old man who worked at a hospital close to Wuhan has become the second doctor to die of coronavirus within 24 hours in China's Hubei province, health officials have confirmed.

Huang Wenjun, who specialised in respiratory medicine, suffered pneumonia on duty at Xiaogan Central Hospital, in Hubei, China, and died at around 7.30pm LT.

May Dr. Huang Wenjun and Dr. Xia Sisi Rest In Peace.

I’m seeing a lot of “pressure” starting to accumulate online upon WHO re: the declaration of the “P” word. There is already a lot of buzz starting on if WHO is dropping the ball.

Considering the recent events, tomorrow will be a very interesting PC. We are obviously seeing “sustained human to human transmission” and intercontinental cases.

Maybe WHO will declare a “P” tomorrow.

And if so:

The masks have long been cleared off the shelves, so now unavailable.

Not really concerned about not having masks.

Restocked, and restocking the pantry, just because.

Upon WSers advice
Did send the hubs out to get his Tylenol supply, a few days ago.
And yesterday mentioned to him about restocking the battery supply and to replace the batteries in the smoke detectors,
cause I just replaced my old fire extinguisher, with a new one, and my carbon monoxide sensor thing.

Anyway, he came back with a bag full of batteries;
a worst case scenario in my home is when all the tv remotes lose charge at the same time and the hubs has to scrounge around the house looking for AAS for the master remote.

There are 73 million in the US boomer population.
If 15% contract the virus and then 2% die = 219,000 deaths.

If 50% contract the virus and 2% die = 730,000 deaths
But we would have 36 million trying to get in a hospital.

You get the idea......
