It's interesting. On TripAdvisor, one of the best travel forums around, there is virtually no mention of COVID-19

And if gets mentioned, it gets quickly dismissed.

Almost as if TA wants to suppress travel fears for a reason. And this is on the Cruise forum.

Perhaps some cruise enthusiasts are flagging the posts for deletion. TripAdvisor certainly isn’t censoring it, there are 34 pages of posts if you search it.

Schools across the UK are sending pupils home.

Penair School in Truro this morning told parents to collect children who had been on a skiing trip to Ponte di Legno, which is near the Swiss border and well away from the towns currently under lockdown by the Italian authorities. In a message sent to parents the Truro school said: “Following an announcement at 8am this morning, regarding the coronavirus, by the health secretary and having sought guidance from Public Health England (PHE) we are required to send all children and staff home who attended the ski trip, to self-quarantine for 14 days. Please be assured this is a precautionary measure.”

Meanwhile Brine Leas Academy in Nantwich said it was temporarily closing its sixth form after teachers and students also returned from a half-term trip to Italy.

Cransley School, an independent school also in Cheshire, announced it would close for a week after some pupils reported feeling ill after a skiing trip to Bormio in Lombardy.

Other parents report being told to keep their children home from school after returning from family holidays in northern Italy over the half-term break.

Zhang Ying, deputy director of Tianjin’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was asked during a news program on state broadcaster CCTV when citizens could feel safe that the outbreak was contained. “Speaking in terms of epidemiology, we have to keep observing for at least two longest incubation periods of time since the last infection cleared, and in the case of coronavirus, it is 28 days in total,” Zhang said, referring to the 14-day quarantines currently in place. “When no more new infections have been reported after 28 days, we can feel 100 percent at ease,” Zhang continued.

Holidaymakers locked down in Spanish hotel as Italian man tests positive for coronavirus

People have been asked to remain in their rooms at the Costa Adeje Palace Hotel in Tenerife, Spain, as a male Italian guest tested positive for coronavirus in a first test Monday night.

“Following the report of a possible coronavirus case detected in a customer from Italy, staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, H10 Hotels has implemented all health and operational recommendations from the health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of customers and employees," a communications representative for the H10 hotel group said in a statement.

"Additionally, we are providing customers and hotel staff all the necessary care and attention so that, despite the inconveniences this situation may cause, they are taken care of in the best way possible," they added.

A spokeswoman for the Canary Island health department told CNN: "We are not calling it a quarantine, we are monitoring and undertaking health checks on all people that might have had a contact with the coronavirus patient -- that includes people from the hotel, not all of them."

"The regional government will hold a meeting this morning to evaluate the situation," she added.

Oh oh...

So we’ve got three new countries on the map already this morning? Austria, Croatia and Spain? (not certain if Spain was on the map already, still catching up as usual.) And there’s a sick airline worker in South Korea? I don’t think we’ve talked about airline workers so far.

Coronavirus: Spain's Canary Islands hotel quarantined

“A tourist hotel on the Canary Island hotel of Tenerife was placed in quarantine Tuesday after an Italian doctor staying there tested positive for coronavirus, which has infected thousands worldwide.”

[...]

“Spanish news media reported that some 1,000 tourists staying at the complex are not allowed to leave.

The Canary Islands, an archipelago located some 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of the African coast, is a popular vacation destination that attracts many northern Europeans all-year-around.”

[...]

“It’s Spain’s third case of COVID-19 and the second in the islands that lie some 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of the African coast. A German tourist was quarantined earlier this month in the island of La Gomera and a British citizen in the Mediterranean’s Balearic Islands. Both were released after recovering and showing no further symptoms of the illness.”

Hmmmm..... just thinking that this wouldn’t be my definition of
“under control”

Perhaps the WHO should consider adding a “PANDEMIC” category!!??
