'It's not if, but when' coronavirus will hit the US - CDC
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US's top public health agency, has warned Americans to brace themselves for a spread of coronavirus within the country.

"It's not so much a question of if this will happen in this country any more but a question of when this will happen," Dr Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunisation and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), said.

"We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad."

It's a change of tone for the CDC, which, until now, has largely been focused on efforts to stop the virus entering the country and on quarantining people who have travelled from China.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar asked for $2.5 billion to be invested in fighting the outbreakImage caption: HHS Secretary Alex Azar asked for $2.5 billion to be invested in fighting the outbreak
Meanwhile Alex Azar, the US Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, has asked a Senate subcommittee to approve $2.5 billion (£1.92 billion) in funding to fight the outbreak.

The money, he said, would pay for the US to expand its surveillance systems for the virus, would support local and state governments, and would help scientists develop vaccines.

Mr Azar also said the US needed to expand its stockpiles of protective equipment, like surgical masks. He said that right now the US has a stockpile of about 30 million masks, but it actually needs 300 million.
ok, not to sound like an alarmist or anything, but just thought I’d BBM from above while it happened to be right there before I go back to get caught up, you know, that way when I “mark” this I won’t miss it...

(I had to pause the PC and turn my phone back on real quick just to say: REVELATION - The faster this thread moves, the faster the virus spread.)

Alright then, shall we ask JerseyGirl to shut down the thread, and it will all end? (notice, I did not do an @ in front of her name lol) *sarcasm/joke* :p We need levity on this tragic thread.

First one to panic gets band camp :D

I just want to say that on Saturday, we ordered Chinese takeout for the first time in months. I was a little hesitant, last time the family wanted to order I thought they were crazy. This time I held back on the crazy.

Tonight I'm going to stop at the Dollar General and stock up on bleach, paper towels, disinfectant solution, toilet paper and such. Maybe they'll have masks, too? Next week I'll start stockpiling food. I won't tell anyone what I'm doing.

Signed,
P

Any idea of the time frame from start off illness to dying takes place?

For those that have age >60 and co-morbidity and case positive, IIRC (someone correct me please) it is usually 3-4 weeks. It's in that timeframe and I would nail it down, but don't want to unless I can find the source to quote here.

Yeah, I'm starting to get it clearly, that if a person wants to be self centered... they would want mild cases to happen around them to create herd immunity.

As I'm over 60 and have one of the comorbities that they are always speaking of that is bad.

I've done the pantry run and all the suggestions here including going online (for $10!) to get my hoarding of drugs I need for my breathing problems now in case there is a supply issue. (I'm actually looking now at where my meds are from, latest one, Albuterol, was made in Ireland)

I'm headed to antisocial behaviour for sure if/when it comes to my part of the world.

My heart goes out to all affected and dealing with this P.

I think its been percolating in the US for some time and we just haven't hit the right tests at the right time. Why why why can S Korea test sooo many while we seem to just be fumbling around with it? Why wouldn't the S Koreans have shared it with us? Just seems like everything is so disconnected...

I cannot remember who posted this (Margarita?) but thanks, I had no idea about Dr. Mike at the WHO who is second chair to Dr. Pedros

"He’s Geneva-based Michael Ryan, from Curry, near the Sligo/Mayo border, who is heading the response of the World Health Organisation to the outbreak, which originated in China. Trained as a trauma surgeon, Michael Ryan switched to public health after suffering a life-altering back injury during the 1990 war in Iraq. That led to training in communicable diseases and a fulltime post with the World Health Organisation. He has since been involved in the fights against Sars, Ebola, bird flu and other threats to global health.

In 2011, he retired and returned to live with his wife and family in Galway.

However, in 2017, after criticism of the WHO’s response to the Ebola crisis, the Organisation set up a separate emergencies programme . . . and asked Ryan to head it.

I just love it here when folks come up with stuff perhaps we would have never found if it weren't for fellow posters.
You're welcome Dixie. That was me (Margarita was asking about him). I was familiar with his background as he grew up nearby. It sounds like he has had a very eventful life. Here's some more info from a recent Irish Times article:

He calls himself “the old dog for the road”, a 25-year veteran of viral firefights with Sars, Ebola, bird flu and many other threats to global health. In an eventful career, he’s been held hostage in Iraq, buried bodies to stop contagion in west Africa and faced down guns just about everywhere, even in the operating theatre.

This is the quandry for clinical trials. If you enter, you may be getting a placebo. That is a chitty decision to have to make MOO, yet is the what is needed for clinical trials. Wuhan has already said many are refusing... as they perhaps don't want plecebo and die. Gawd awful, but it is what it is. SMDH.

"8:47 am: US plans trial of Gilead drug remdesivir
The U.S. is planning a clinical trial of Gilead’s experimental drug for the novel coronavirus, according to a posting on a government clinical trials database. The trial, run by the University of Nebraska Medical Center along with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, will be conducted at up to 50 sites globally and will test the medicine, called remdesivir, against placebo, according to the protocol, which was posted Friday. —Tirrell

Thank you :)

I didn't go out today. My city is still in the clear as of now. I did check out the live cam for the Piazza and was surprised to see many out still celebrating the carnivale. We are very lucky to not have any cases since we are not to far away from the main areas. I did read all about the precaution that the city has going on. Tents up and areas to quarantine if needed. I have to walk to the stores so I do bring home a little bit extra but tonight my husband brought home extra pasta and rice packages. I feel like I have 2 weeks of meals. It quite sad to see Italy have gone up in numbers again.

Hotel on Spanish vacation island locked down amid coronavirus fears

Rebecca Lunt, who is staying at the hotel, told NBC News via Facebook messenger that guests were not being allowed to leave.[/QUOTE/]

.

I saw some videos of the Tenerife hotel this am on BBC News. About a third of the people had their masks half off , or hanging around their necks as they are filmed talking to hotel staff, each other, or news people. You know, like within 4 feet of potential droplet spray *faceplant*

This is not the way to protect yourself.

I'm worried Tenerife is going to turn into another Diamond Princess at this rate
