.@ScottGottliebMD: “This is going to become epidemic over next 8, 10 weeks,” and maybe return in the fall. “Hopefully we’ll have a therapeutic.” Two most promising are Gilead’s remdesivir and antibody-based approaches. Says Regeneron “far ahead” on that type of product #COVID19

.@JoeSquawk: When will we know we’ll get overwhelmed in ERs?
@ScottGottliebMD: We’re probably 2-3 weeks from people starting to show up in ICU. Some data in NY showing spikes in pneumonia-like illness, which may be a sign, but unclear

There are many corona viruses. About 10% of cases of the common cold are caused by them, they are not new, you have probably been infected by one before sometime in your life. Covid-19 is a new mutated version related to virus that caused SARS and MERS.
Yes, there are many corona virus, and not only species that cause infections among humans. There are corona viruses among different avian and mammal species, and the virus is usually species specific, but here have been when it has crossed over to other species, like SARS, MERS and now SARS-CoV-2. Some of those "cross-overs" happened a long time ago, it's not a new phenomenon. There are interesting facts about the evolution of corona viruses here: Coronavirus - Wikipedia

Medicines taken by thousands of people with high blood pressure and diabetes could raise the risk of deadly coronavirus symptoms, scientists claim

It explains that the coronavirus sticks to cells and attacks them by latching onto something called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).

Some people with high blood pressure or type 1 or type 2 diabetes have to take drugs which increase the amount of ACE2 that they have on their cells, in order to control their illness.

The drugs studied were ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).

The most prescribed versions of these in England are Ramipril, Losartan, Lisinopril and Candesartan, according to NHS data.

Walmart by 7 am. Also there was a weird double-sided iPad camera recording us in the cleaning supplies aisle. Didn’t see one anywhere else!

(Sorry, don’t know why the pics are uploading sideways, I even tried compressing them to the smallest size offered.)

3,000 now infected in Germany

Kate Connolly, our correspondent in Berlin, reports that 3,000 people in Germany now have coronavirus. Six people have so far died.

Berlin, Bavaria and two other states are the first to announce the blanket closure of schools and kindergartens. Two others, the worst-hit state of North Rhein Westphalia where over 1,000 are infected, and Rheinland Pfalz, are expected to make similar decisions later today.

Just speculation... It takes people to keep the power grid operation. The power company employees can/will become sick, this will could have an impact.

Power companies "share" employees during mass outages, use a lot of contract workers, etc. These employees /contract folks can and are on the move from state to state. Some will become sick, quarantined or chose not to work to protect themselves and family.

Yup, power grid could be impacted. MOO

And coal based plants could be affected by transportation issues, mining issues, etc

Boy am I a dummy...my little neighborhood Kroger was busy at 6 am, no tp, lots of shelves bare and no checkers, only the self check. I did get to chat with a nice looking man from Romania, so there’s that.

This all shows why access to quick, reliable, affordable testing is an absolute must not just for high-profile players but for the general public. Health officials have been stressing for weeks now that one of the keys to controlling the spread of the virus is quarantining people who only show mild symptoms, like Gobert. Diagnosing one person before he can potentially infect others is the best way to help stem the spread of the disease.

“Without testing, you have no idea how extensive the infection is. You can’t isolate people. You can’t do anything,” Ashish Jha, who runs the Harvard Global Health Institute, told NPR. “And so then we’re left with a completely different set of choices. We have to shut schools, events and everything down, because that’s the only tool available to us until we get testing back up. It’s been stunning to me how bad the federal response has been.”

The NBA's access to coronavirus testing helped the league protect players. The rest of us deserve the same.

Around 60% of the UK population will need to become infected with coronavirus in order for society to have "herd immunity" from future outbreaks, Sir Patrick Vallance said.

Herd immunity is the resistance to a contagious disease within a population because enough people have become immune, and so it is harder for it to spread.
