The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Hey Everyone,

We are putting together a forum for the virus. If you have any ideas for the categories to be included in the forum please send me a private message. Here is what I am thinking so far:
Each state will have its own thread. We will ask everyone to put in information about their state.
A general discussion where this thread and the past threads will be located.
A media thread of course.
Debunking all the kooky crap out there discussion.
Daily count of how many cases are being reported and how many deaths. We would have other countries included. This would be a no discussion thread too.
I have a few more ideas but I am open to anything.
Thanks.
Tricia

Let me clear something up. We will all be together on this thread discussing just like we are now. The other categories will be added so you all can access certain pieces of info more quickly.

MOD NOTE
A few things to help keep this vital discussion open and safe:

  • This forum is NOT for debate. It is for the sharing of information and feelings. If someone’s feelings are not in line with yours, DO NOT DEBATE. It is not productive and it negates the purpose of the discussion here. STOP before you reply in anger to someone who posted something you do not agree with or like. REPORT it instead and Mods will determine how to handle it or whether it can stay. DO NOT DEBATE.
  • Discussing personal FB posts of ANY kind, yours included, is a violation of TOS. Apparently Facebook has had a technical glitch and numerous posts by many folks were deleted in error. THAT IS NOT FOR DISCUSSION ON THIS BOARD, and those posts talking about it will be deleted.
  • ANY of the above CAN be discussed in Private Messages. That is where these subjects belong.
This is an extremely difficult and challenging time for all of us. It is not uncommon for fear to manifest itself in anger. We can try our best to direct our fear and anger in ways that do not hurt others, but will still allow for venting anger because that is normal and healthy. We just need to try to keep the anger off the boards so that we can all manage our fear at such a time as this.

COMPANIES HIRING

Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States, has announced it will hire 150,000 workers from now until the end of May. Those hired will work in stores, distribution centers, clubs and fulfillment centers, Walmart said Thursday.

7-Eleven, the country’s largest convenience store chain, announced Friday it will hire 20,000 new workers for in-store roles, many of whom will work to meet what the company calls a “surge” in mobile orders.

Petra Industries
On March 20, Petra announced plans to hire at least 50 new full-time positions over the next couple weeks. These new jobs will help Petra meet the rising demand for ecommerce fulfillment.

Amazon plans hire 100,000 people to keep up with online orders as the coronavirus spreads and keeps more people at home, shopping online. The company will also raise pay by $2 an hour through the end of April for hourly employees, who work at its warehouses, delivery centers and Whole Foods grocery stores.

Online learning companies: Now that over 30 million children are out of school, it’s boom time for online schools, which are swiftly expanding capacity. Outschool is hiring thousands of teachers to meet demand.

Grocery stores and delivery services: Grocery stores are your friends. Major chains such as Kroger, Meijer, and Safeway are hiring in-store shelf stockers and delivery staff; ditto for regional chains such as Raley’s. Grocery delivery services and apps such as Instacart are also hiring.

Working families: Many working parents are now forced to hire for many months of childcare, now that California’s governor announced that schools likely won’t open before fall. If kidcare is your jam, consider offering cheap, flexible options. Snap up these gigs in the next couple weeks.

Remote meeting and communication companies: Zoom is hiring, as are Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Clusters of people in nursing homes and clusters of people on the beaches, no difference. Transmission will be high.

Imo there’s a big difference between nursing home clusters and beach clusters.

Indeed transmission will be high, via various clusters and people will congregate at beaches; however nursing homes are proving themselves to be a very very high risk, as we know.

What I’m noting is these recent flare ups, and specifically in these environments. A fire goes out then it flares up again in the nursing homes. This important to take note of going forward. It’s these “new clusters” that
suddenly interest me.

These recent reports imo demonstrate the really really high risks to these communities even after a fire appears to be out. Even when and if you get it contained, or somewhat contained, it seems you can clearly have these additional outbreaks especially in these nursing home settings. This so good to know moo.

And look at these medical workers and caregivers continuing to get infected...

What kind of wine did you get btw? :)

it gets really cold down here, yeah canada cold but with no snow, it gets down to 0 overnight in winter and single digits during the day but recently we had some cold days in a row but after he left it was like 30c so not winter temps just yet

Below freezing in the morning and warm in the afternoon - just like a Canadian Autumn. It will be interesting to see whether colder temperatures fuel or starve the virus - Australia first.

Good to know:

"Viruses didn’t become ubiquitous by being wimps: From the rhinoviruses that cause the common cold to the new coronavirus that has spread across the world, they are able to survive on surfaces far away from the living cells that they need in order to reproduce.

How long they can lurk before a living organism comes along to infect depends on the kind of surface and the properties of the virus: The Covid-19 virus, according to a new study, sticks around on plastic surfaces for up to three days, but for a shorter period on metals.

Rhinoviruses can survive on human skin for hours, which is why shaking hands with someone who has a cold is a good way to catch it. Influenza viruses remain infectious for up to 48 hours after landing on nonporous surfaces such as stainless steel or plastic such as that in computer keyboards, but that seems like the outer limit: A 2011 study found that the H1N1 flu virus that caused the 2009 pandemic could be recovered from glass, stainless steel, plastic, and aluminum for up to 48 hours, but most was gone after nine hours. Both cold and flu viruses survive for much shorter times on porous surfaces such as cloth, paper, or tissue, with very little infectious virus remaining after four hours."

Marine rotation to Australia ‘on hold’ over COVID-19 concerns

“According to a newsletter from 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines’ commanding officer Lt. Col. Jason Goodale, an advanced party of Marines currently in Okinawa, Japan, waiting to deploy to Australia will remain there until a “final decision” is reached.

The delay of the deployment to Australia is the latest setback to hit the Corps as COVID-19 continues to impact military readiness and operations around the globe.”

Are they in quarantine, and every time someone gets sick, everyone's timeline is pushed back? The last thing anyone needs is military people moving the virus around the world - like what happened in 1918.

Coronavirus prison cases raise alarms, calls for inmate release

This is a problem. If inmates are infected, the prison system doesn't have the facilities to maintain prisoners on ventilators. And this is where medical ethics can debate forever...say, Chris Watts, family annihilator, in prison currently, gets the virus, and is at a hospital, on a ventilator. Does he merit this type of care? What if the hospital runs out of equipment? Is it, "First come, first served"?

Will society make prison guards go to work in an environment where prisoners are rampant with infection? Just opening the doors and letting out everyone in prison is not really the best scenario.

Would be interesting to see how other countries managed this...

It is very ominous. I think data is showing that a two-week self-isolation window isn't long enough. One of the Princess Cruise passengers at Nebraska Medicine continued to test positive for more than 40 days after his arrival in Omaha. His wife never tested positive but he had to remain in quarantine until 3 tests spaced 24 hours apart tested negative. He never got very ill and kept a blog diary. But I do believe the length of time he had to remain in quarantine concerned everyone.

I posted last night about the tiny island nation of Timor-Leste in S.E. Asia, of interest to me because a dear friend lives there. She moved from the U.S. several years ago to do volunteer work and has shared with me the poverty and suspicion of western medicine endemic there. There were no cases reported there yesterday, but as of today, Timor-Leste has its first confirmed case of COVID-19. :(

Vice-Minister of Health Elia dos Reis Amaral confirmed the positive test yesterday.

She said the patient – a foreign national – had recently returned from overseas, and remained in isolation with what was described as only “mild” symptoms.

In a statement, a ministry spokesperson said the department’s Epidemiological Vigilance Intervention team was assessing who the patient may have come into contact with.

“This [patient] is not a big risk to the public because they cooperated with health staff when they became sick with symptoms of Covid-19,” the statement said.

Alaska:

COVID-19 cases emerge in new communities on Kenai Peninsula as Alaska’s tally rises to 21
Updated: 1 hour ago

“Seven new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Alaska on Saturday, state officials announced.

The new confirmed cases include one case each in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Sterling and Soldotna, while Ketchikan saw an additional three cases, bringing that community’s total to six overall. The uptick in cases in Ketchikan prompted officials there to issue an emergency proclamation that strongly urges residents to shelter in place, following a similar order in Anchorage.

Statewide, there are 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19: Anchorage now has five cases, Fairbanks has seven and Seward has one. The cases announced Saturday in Sterling and Soldotna are the first to be confirmed in those communities.”
