Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #33

.

I am not active in this coronavirus topic because it is going bananas .... haaa

But have something important to pass on....

Why soap and water is so important

Plus it cheap and easy to do

Alcohol is a great sanitizer but does not actually "kill" the virus .... what happens is the alcohol penetrates and damages the thin membrane surrounding the virus ...... so does soap .

Following is quoted from Pall Thordarson who is a Professor in Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, Sydney

(From his article)

So why does soap work so well on the Sars-CoV-2, the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? The short story: because the virus is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer. Soap dissolves the fat membrane and the virus falls apart like a house of cards and dies – or rather, we should say it becomes inactive as viruses aren’t really alive.

Washing the virus off with water alone might work. But water is not good at competing with the strong, glue-like interactions between the skin and the virus. Water isn’t enough.

Soapy water is totally different. Soap contains fat-like substances known as amphiphiles, some of which are structurally very similar to the lipids in the virus membrane. The soap molecules “compete” with the lipids in the virus membrane. This is more or less how soap also removes normal dirt from the skin.

The soap not only loosens the “glue” between the virus and the skin but also the Velcro-like interactions that hold the proteins, lipids and RNA in the virus together.

Alcohol-based products, which pretty much includes all “disinfectant” products, contain a high-percentage alcohol solution (typically 60-80% ethanol) and kill viruses in a similar fashion. But soap is better because you only need a fairly small amount of soapy water, which, with rubbing, covers your entire hand easily. Whereas you need to literally soak the virus in ethanol for a brief moment, and wipes or rubbing a gel on the hands does not guarantee that you soak every corner of the skin on your hands effectively enough.

So, soap is the best, but do please use alcohol-based sanitizer when soap is not handy or practical.

If I had a family member alone, or I needed some space from my loved one. I would order an Amazon Echo 3rd generation.
They're $49.00 on Amazon. We got our first one about 3 weeks ago.
A very fun, interactive computer.
Can keep you engaged for hours a day.

A great present to cheer someone up. Imo

My 89 yr old Mom got one for Christmas from us, last year. She begged us to take it back---she thought it was 'creepy' and she said she couldn't sleep with it in her apartment. lol

Depends on who you listen to. If you think Malaria drugs cure coronavirus, the cure is next week. If you trust scientists, it's 12-18 months at best. July 2022.

There are scientific research papers backing the success rates of the malaria drugs in combatting Corona Virus. Some were posted in last thread.

“A local doctor's call-to-action has gone viral after a moving speech following Gov. J.B. Pritzker's announcement Friday of a stay-at-home ordinance amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Emily Landon is the chief infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine, who moments after Pritzker issued the ordinance to take effect Saturday evening, took to the stand with a 7-minute-long speech that went viral after striking a chord for many individuals.”

33 threads. I joined in at thread 19, I believe - and that was just around a fortnight ago. Things are moving fast and not just these threads.
Anyway. Good morning everyone.
I surprised myself by sleeping through the night but still woke up drenched in panic. It’s so hard to come to terms with how the world has altered in such a short time.
I am going to have another self-care day, I think. Switch off the news for a few hours, batch cook some meals for the freezer, find a quiet spot to count my blessings, make more bread, maybe see if I can find a virtual church service to attend...
Be safe, Sleuthers.

I’m so happy to hear this. Bad enough to go through a pandemic, imagine having nowhere safe to rest your head at night. My respect for our Mayor increases by the day.

James Delingpole has a great similar article ..... this has all come to light since they noticed malaria-vaccinated countries have dramatically lower coronavirus cases than anywhere else

With the caution that some of those countries do not have the wherewithal to track statistics properly

The test was so successful that the same drugs will now be given to COVID-19 patients in 50 hospitals around Australia.

The two drugs were highly effective when used against coronavirus in test tubes.

Coronavirus Pandemic LIVE Updates: Death of 38-Year-Old in Bihar Takes India Toll to 6, Total Infections at 324

“India is witnessing an unprecedented shutdown following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for a 'Janata curfew'. The 'Janata curfew' got underway at 7 am and will continue till 9pm. People are largely keeping themselves indoor as part of the social distancing exercise to stop the spread of the virus and bare number of public transport vehicles are plying on nearly empty roads. All markets and establishments except those dealing in essential goods and services will be closed for the day. Punjab, meanwhile, has become the fifth states to announce a lockdown till March 31, following similar announcements by Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Bihar.”

Coronavirus LIVE: 2 die in Mumbai and Patna, India under Janta Curfew
Last Updated at March 22 2020 14:00 IST

“Roads were empty and public transport and markets closed in India as millions put themselves under a 14-hour long voluntary curfew on Sunday to limit the fast-spreading coronavirus epidemic in the country, where 324 people have so far been found to have contracted the disease.”

[...]

“Modi in a televised address to the nation last week urged citizens to stay indoors from 7am to 9pm--a move that he said would be a crucial test for a country to assess its abilities to fight the pandemic.

“Let us all be a part of this curfew, which will add tremendous strength to the fight against the COVID-19 menace,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted minutes before the 'Janta Curfew' commenced. “The steps we take now will help in the times to come,’ he said in the tweet.”

—-

“While India placed travel restrictions relatively early in the spread of Covid-19, and several states moved quickly to shutter public places, the country’s high population density (and the associated difficulty in practising social distancing), overburdened public health infrastructure, high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the prospect of transmission from younger people to the elderly in joint families all stack the odds against effective containment.”

Well, this "a way" to distance yourself from the grandkids!
Just bring the beach chairs and keep a safe distance!
(They really shouldn't have left their home, but older people can be hard headed!)
This is a friend of mine's parents and children...
I don't think their faces can be seen.
Just, how sweet is the power of love?
