Why hasn't it skyrocketed in China and Japan, Sweden, and Germany.

In fact can anyone explain the low deaths in those countries? What are they doing right that USA and UK are not?

Common sense and rigid adherence is my first guess. But there are other reasons, too (rapidity of response is probably the big one).

In China, severity and rigidity of lockdown was key. In Japan, people locked themselves down with haste - they have a different history than the US, the reasons are many. Japan was fast (like the Republic of Georgia - which also remembers its history), Japan had voluntary compliance and knew what to do. Contact testing fully operational in China, Japan and Germany.

It IS skyrocketing in Sweden - where are you hearing otherwise? They just decided to do it that way. They aren't a very big country, but their curve was exponential (skyrocketing) until at least yesterday. For the first 11 days it was steep and is now leveling off:

Sweden and China are really two extremes, with different outcomes in terms of who is dying and how fast.

Germany is very interesting and closer to our culture in the US, much to be learned there. But apparently social distancing is built into the German culture in some ways (same with all the Northern European nations...)

I have had an Anthrax series and Smallpox vaccines. I would have never done either one voluntarily.

When they get a vaccine for Coronavirus, COVID19, the first guinea pigs will be our military and National Guard "volunteers".

The only reason that I think that a major food shortage could happen is if people panic and hoard. JMO.

Yes. They were great. No tilling or fighting weeds. Amazon sells several brands and some garden centers carry them too.

I bought some of those for the first time this year. I planted potatoes in them. I can't wait to see how well they work. There's this guy on youtube that grows everything in the grow bags and uses baby pools to make them self watering. I'm not doing it with my potatoes but I thought it was fascinating. Search "Kiddie Pool Grow Bag System" and you should find lots of interesting videos on the watering method.

ETA: @CSIDreamer I meant to quote you too.

I did a telehealth session with my primary Dr. recently. He's been my doc for over 18 years
It was great! I had an earache, similar to one I've had before, fluid in the ear...not an infection..but annoying. He prescribed some allergy meds and its cleared, but I loved not having to go in the office. Since we've known each other so long we talked about Covid at some length, he knows I have always had a keen
interest in virology.

We have one of those drive in church services here in my town. Didn't really concern me except for one thing I noticed in the Facebook "ad" for it..
They pass out children activity packets to all the kids. Wondering what precautions they take with that.

I was looking online for something to use on my husband's head--he's mostly bald on top and they normally use a #2 setting on what hair there is. I hear Wahl clippers are hard to find. Plenty of demand I guess.

One place you might try if you can't find those elsewhere is Kohls: Wahl Stainless Steel Lithium Ion Hair Trimmer

Kohls closed their stores but they are still selling online and I think most people will forget to check there for clippers. We have a set similar to the above. They are not the cheapest clippers but they are made in the USA and have lasted us for over a decade of haircuts (I always cut my DH's hair).

They could start with requiring Hepa Filters (high quality) in their ventilation systems. The difference in price between a regular filter and a Hepa Filter is about $2000-5000 a year for most larger buildings. Environmental control companies come in and fit new filters, then the business has to continue to change them out. THey should be inspected and they should be mandated to have them.

But this is not the kind of thing that the federal government usually does, and it is certainly antithetical to everything regulatory that the current administration favors. So it has to be cities, counties and states that enact those requirements.

Which is actually EASIER to do and people should go to their City Councils and demand it (by Zoom if need be) But instead, some people just demand we "reopen" everything with no changes.

If those same people would go to their City Councils, County Boards and State Legislators and focus on each needed change individually, they would be helpful. Instead of hindering the entire recovery from this.

That one change (plus mandated testing for the employees - and temperature checks for employees) would change the situation dramatically. Then...a reduction in beds per facility (that means less profit though - and you know how some people hate that).

The problem with adding HEPA filters to existing HVAC systems is that HEPA filters have less airflow. That means the system may need to be replaced to have enough airflow to heat or cool a space. It isn’t as easy as it looks, even if filters of the same size are purchased.

Thanks! I looked at that one and it should work for us. We would have to learn how to use them, since we've never tried this before. I wish there was something I could practice on before using it on my hubby's head!

I have some family members in Michigan and I was really concerned when I read about all these restrictions placed on buying garden seeds and gardening supplies. My relatives are retired and have always had a large backyard garden each summer (both vegetables and flowers). I called them yesterday and offered to mail some seeds so they could plant despite the restrictions. To my great relief, they told me that they can still buy garden seeds and garden plants and I didn't need to send anything. The restriction is ONLY on buying those things at the big box stores like Walmart and Home Depot. Apparently the rule is based on the physical size of the store. They can get all their seeds and plants and other supplies from smaller garden centers. And they told me they got almost everything they will need already. My relatives main concern with the restrictions were that the rules made the small garden centers more crowded and meant they had to increase their risk by shopping at more than one store. They wore masks and gloves but it was impossible to social distance in one of the smaller stores. The other small local garden center was placing restrictions on the number of people allowed in at once. That was good for social distancing inside but it led to long lines outside and a full parking lot. I'm glad that the small garden centers will likely be able to stay in business but I worry a little that they might not be able to handle all the additional people who are suddenly wanting to start gardening. Hopefully this ban is only a temporary situation. I wouldn't like those rules at all.

MOO.

Thank you so much for providing this level of detail. Great to hear how things are going on the local level.

Warm and Fuzzy Alert. Here's a story that includes my Pokemon gaming buddy from Tacoma who has been working nonstop to produce face shields that he designed and machined to donate to local responders and medical personnel, including those in my town. He lost his wife just over a month ago and I believe doing this act of kindness has helped him cope while at the same time serving a desperate need for our community!

Planning for a "soft" re-opening of our restaurant.
I have ordered hydrogen peroxide, plastic bottles with pumps, napkins, hundreds of gloves and masks.
We have a large patio, where we can space people out. Our formal dining room is small, so we will have to remove tables or put "reserved signs" on tables, to keep people spaced apart.
Keeping our servers spaced apart will be difficult.
They all gather at the pass station to pick up their plates of food.
In the warmer months, we generally have live music, such as a guitarist or sax player. I have an outside area where I can put them.
But, all of this will be difficult, and definitely reduce our income from previous times. I will need someone able to continue to do the curbside service.
I'm trying to prepare and get ready to train staff and micro manage the employees. Our employees are adults, not young kids, so, that should help.

surprised you were able to find those supplies anywhere?

Yes, and there are people who do this. HVAC specialists, today sometimes called Environmental Engineers.

It's not just about replacing filters- one has to spend an initial amount of money to get a higher powered pumping system.

OR, businesses can use other technologies (localized hepa filters). There are entire businesses that advise just on these things.
