I'm already seeing that amongst people I know personally with the newest reports of a beef/meat shortage. This article is from the NYT yesterday, so I'm guessing it's about to get a lot worse.

The Food Chain’s Weakest Link: Slaughterhouses
This is what I was trying to explain to my husband.
I want to go buy baby chicks and raise them. They would not be able to lay eggs until probably November, but what if in November we realize we really should've bought baby chicks in April?
Honestly I don't think we are allowed to own any hens, as we live on less than 2 acres, but if we need eggs for food... and share with the neighbors.
Who is going to tell?
Hopefully things won't get to that point, but will they really tell me I can't keep the hens, if there is a food shortage?
Oh well. I don't think I will convince him this is something we should do.
It does worry me.

But they resisted and didn't shut immediately when asked, which is the point. And now, their supporters are spilling out into the streets - not protesting (because it's Britain) but instead defying quarantine and clapping - in FAR greater numbers than the people in Michigan.

And UK news likes to show Michigan - and India - and New York - but not London. The Guardian is keeping perspective, but Brits are pouring onto the streets for those clapping things and still going to pubs (according to what they're posting online).

The increase in cases over the past 10 days are related to the resistance of the Spoons crowd and not social distancing. There is really no other way to transmit this disease except to go out in public. Unknowing, asymptomatic transmitters are the problem, in terms of opening up gradually.

The rest of us should be thinking about how to cope, since it's clear that every place except for a few will be "opening up" in the next little while.

I’m so confused by this post I don’t know where to start.

Great post. Businesses have to worry about liability. Not just government. And people aren't idiots, they're not going to rush out to crowded movie theaters or restaurants. So, jobs will be lost regardless of government actions.

I do think we'll see a lot of non-essential, out-of-work people in the streets, and who knows where that will go. Baby step approach is being tried in cities around California (businesses with 10 or fewer workers may reopen in some places - and for some places, that's going to be a real boon). The only restaurant we ever go to is doing business gangbusters (take out only) and hired new employees.

There are lots of jobs in many places, just not the job a person just got furloughed from.
Jobs are about to change. Somehow protestors think that if everything reopened tomorrow, they would immediately get their jobs back. Need to wake up. In almost a flash things changed. Not gonna be the same. With no vaccine in sight for many months, who really wants to sit in a crowded stadium for a concert or a sporting event? Inside a restaurant? At Disney? At a mall? On an international tour? Any flight? Live in a school dorm? Go to school as normal?

I get your worry, unless you are in a city and maybe if you are you might be able to raise chickens. I have many resources for meat and we do technically own a farm but I hope others don’t have a shortage

Yes. They were great. No tilling or fighting weeds. Amazon sells several brands and some garden centers carry them too.
I haven’t found, near the Nezpique, that it works as well. JMOHGO

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Nearly 100 employees at a Tyson chicken plant in Tennessee have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Workers will be required to take their temperatures at the start of their shifts and wear face coverings.

“We’re extremely grateful for the work our team members are doing and for the role they play in the critical supply chain that extends from farm to fork,” Tyson Foods Senior Vice President Hector Gonzalez told CNN.

The company has expanded workspaces and is sanitizing and deep-cleaning plant production areas, as well as employee locker and break rooms.

Officials in Iowa have asked Tyson Fresh Meats to close its Waterloo pork processing plant amid concerns of spreading the coronavirus, The Associated Press reported.

A facility in Columbus Junction where at least 148 employees were infected and two died, has been closed since April 6. The company hoped to reopen it this week.

Coronavirus: Nearly 100 Tyson chicken workers test positive for virus
This, and the factory my sister works at, are the types of places that need testing done. I'm ok going back to work with my 3 coworkers. But these people, where hundreds work closely together, need testing. I can't tell you how worried I am about my sister's situation where coworkers have tested positive.

I also used to order Italian seeds from a grower in Italy. Still looking for those cherry tomato seeds from Sicily.

If you keep them in a refrig that’s between 60-50 I think it’s ok. After Katrina we lost the real Creole seeds because electricity went out & seeds rotted. Depends upon where you live & how old the seeds are. I’d try it anyway—what’s there to lose? I’m in coastal USDA climate zone 9. Well in July it feels like the zone is in hell.

This year I planted some heirloom seeds I saved between 2007 and 2013. Mostly tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. Germination was slow but it's at about 40% now for the very old seeds. So far so good on the ones that came up. They are about 3 to 4 inches tall and have their first set of true leaves. The seeds survived about 4 moves of residence and I didn't do anything special to store them except I made sure to keep them dry and inside an air conditioned house. So I agree, for anyone who has old seeds, plant them and see what happens.

They are work but if you can buy chicks and a hoop to move them about your yard as well as a coop and are willing to go out in the dead of winter then it is a great idea. I grew up on a chicken farm so it isn’t as romantic to me but I’m these times I am starting to agree with my husband that we should get a small set up. Right now I like living on a farm where we don’t farm.

I'm in a pretty rural area in Georgia, Corps of Engineers Land between my back yard and Lake Allatoona.
I think I can ask for a special permit, but the court house is closed.
I have several friends who raise chickens, so that could still be a possibility in future months.

I need to be going to sleep but I'm genuinely concerned. What are overseas media saying about the UK to be so misleading?! It's dangerous to mislead people. Any increase in cases here (as you know Cags) is no way related to pubs or public gatherings. People need to know the truth about this thing. The UK has been on full lockdown for weeks. The two 20 somethings in my house go out to walk the dog and buy milk. Even if they wanted to go to a pub (which they would know better), none are open. Our local closed on 16 March. I just checked their facebook page for the date.

Yay old gardener in coastal Louisiana shouting

omg... so thinking about your ggm... and your family...........

Thank you. It's my kids' ggm on their dad's side, so not my ggm (not that it matters), but just to be clear. She's really depressed about not being able to go to her aerobics class and play mah jongg with her friends in the afternoon. It sounds small, but to her it's huge.

Yes, huge concern. Plant closed after several positives and two deaths will open in a few days. assembling elbow to elbow, on top of each other, no separation. 800 people.
Will do temp check at entrance. No tests.
Scrambling trying to find masks and gloves since who knows if the company will provide it. And what good is temp checks if no symptoms? Isn’t that when the highest rate of transmission occurs?

I also see reports about an abundance of food because restaurants and schools are closed.

Left with tons of premium food amid coronavirus shutdown, restaurant suppliers turn to consumers to stay afloat

<modsnip: removed content from political publication>

We need to adjust the supply chain to meet consumer needs. Hopefully that will take place in a rapid and organized manner. JMO.

Yep, temperature checks are pretty much useless because people become infectious before developing any symptoms.

Just be sure to do your research first. Know exactly what this entails before jumping in. I love caring for chickens, but it would be a royal pain if I didn't. You need to be there at sun-up and sundown every day unless you can afford fancy remote control doors or have people who are willing to do it for you on a regular basis .
