Exactly: people use these words interchangably with no understanding of their meaning: socialism, communism and facism. Anyone can look up the definition of these words for themselves.

All three words are indeed really basic. But the vocabulary of Americans has been collapsing since the 1960's (these words were in most high school government classes in the 60's and still in the 70's but began to fade from view after that).

Add in "capitalism," "democracy" and "authoritarianism." I remember one English teacher (who had a degree in psychology) giving us a short article on four styles of families ( you can still find it here: 4 Types of Parenting Styles and Their Effects on Kids ) and it really hit home to me what authoritarianism does to a family, to a culture.

Most of Europe has highly socialized mechanisms of education (many have free college for all who qualify), healthcare and transportation. For America, right now, we truly need everyone to have healthcare be available or we will all suffer. I feel so badly for people in those states who are dealing with CoVid without the benefit of the extended Medicaid (or whatever it's called - I just know we have that in California and no matter what happens, most people will still get basic care, although the ACA has made things so much better...)

OSHA fines 14 NJ hospitals, nursing homes for lack of PPE and other failures during COVID

October 5, 2020

Fourteen health care institutions in New Jersey, including hospitals, nursing homes and an ambulance company, have been cited by the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration for failing to provide enough equipment and other protections to health care workers who fell sick and died during the pandemic.

More facilities in New Jersey were cited in the OSHA violations announced Monday than in any other state. The fines totaled $252,150.

They included $46,266 for Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, where Barbara Birchenough, 65, a nurse from Midland Park, died in April after contracting the coronavirus just days before she was to retire. A nurse’s aide who worked with her, Nestor Bautista, 62, also contracted the virus and died.

Lack of personal protective equipment, or PPE — including gowns, face masks, face shields and gloves — as the pandemic roared into North Jersey in March and April was a constant source of worry and alarm among health care workers at hospitals, nursing homes and doctors’ offices.
Some hospital nurses wore garbage bags when gowns ran out.
They reused face masks for days or a week, when a change of PPE was recommended for each patient.

Poor little guys.

At least 8,000 mink dead in Utah after contracting Covid-19

Utah ranchers have lost at least 8,000 mink to an outbreak of Covid-19 among the animals known for their silky, luxurious pelts.

The virus first appeared in the creatures in August, shortly after farmworkers fell ill in July, according to Dean Taylor, state veterinarian of Utah. Initial research shows the virus was transmitted from humans to animals, and so far has not seen any cases of the opposite.

Mink, which are closely related to weasels, otter and ferrets, appear to suffer similar symptoms to humans. Difficulty breathing and crusting around the eyes are usually seen, but the virus progresses rapidly, and most infected mink are dead by the next day, according to Taylor. It’s unclear what makes mink such a susceptible species, while others appear to be unaffected.

The picnic meals have been amazing. We're rediscovering the joys of a meal outside with fresh air, breezes, birds singing, etc. We won't talk about the insects lol. It's also fabulous for the grands. They can run laps around the picnic table and holler and who cares! Jmo

That sounds adorable... I myself haven't closed my living room windows in about 2 weeks (I am on a high floor in my building and it does get hot). This is good because walking around the city masked, whenever I take it off to blow my nose or grab a breath of fresh air after climbing stairs, etc., it seems really obvious that the decreased traffic has resulted in much cleaner, fresher air... which I in turn can never smell when anyone is within 6 feet of me, lol.

New England Journal of Medicine: 'Dangerously incompetent' politicians must go

In a first for the journal, the 35 editors of The New England Journal of Medicine called for Americans to vote out leaders who have not done enough to address the pandemic.

The editorial points to early blunders such as testing shortages and a lack of personal protective equipment for health care workers, but adds that the country continues to fall short today.

The editors called other public health interventions, such as social distancing measures, “lackadaisical at best,” and criticized moves to lift restrictions before the virus’ spread was brought under control.

The editorial also pointed out that mask wearing has been inconsistent across the country, “largely because our leaders have stated outright that masks are political tools rather than effective infection control measures.”
It seems strange they don't mention that WHO policy was followed or that the states made decisions themselves about care homes and PPE and that even now some are under investigation. Especially as it is the New England Journal of Medicine. MOO.

The New York Jets had a positive COVID-19 test for a player and sent all their players and coaches home Friday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Jets player who tested positive has been retested, and results should be known at some point Friday, a source told ESPN's Rich Cimini. Players were in the building on Friday morning when the team became aware, and everyone was sent home immediately as the facility was shut down.

I think it's classified as a part of a socialist ideal. There's nothing wrong with society caring strongly about its own members and attempting to provide certain commodities to everyone. Like water. And food. And healthcare.

The opposite is competitive capitalism, unfettered. Anyone who has read about 19th century American and early 20th century America surely can't want that either (child labor/slavery, people locked into factories, slavery, etc., etc)
UK is a capitalist country with free healthcare for decades. It is not mutually exclusive and makes healthcare decisions regarding public vaccination schemes much easier. Patients are more willing to have a vaccine if it is free. Up to now the flu vax has only been free to over 65's but I don't know the plan for the Covid vaccine. Both may end up free for over 50's.

I knew it had happened but this is the first I have seen about it for a while.
