Rick Scott: Florida GOP senator says he has Covid-19 - CNNPolitics

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said in a statement Friday morning he has tested positive with Covid-19, adding to the number of lawmakers in recent days that have tested positive with the virus.
......
Scott is the latest senator to test positive with Covid-19. Sen. Chuck Grassley, who is 87, announced earlier this week he was positive.

The cases brings CNN's tally to 26 House members and nine senators that have so far tested positive or been presumed positive since the start of the pandemic.

The increased number in positive lawmakers from both parties and chambers of Congress coincides with the uptick of cases across the country. The House began offering Covid-19 testing for members this week, eight months after the pandemic began.

Thank you for posting the total tally! I was just about to go look for it. 9 is a lot. I hope the Senators don't take CV back to their hometowns.

I am dreading the next couple of months. Thousands of college students heading home, thousands of grandparents unable to attend festivities. If ever there were a time to be super careful, it is now.

Condi Rice, who runs the Hoover Institution, criticized Scott Atlas during a Stanford Faculty Senate meeting last night, where a resolution condemning him passed overwhelmingly. The former Secretary of State said Atlas has gone “well beyond the boundaries of what is appropriate.”

Bbm o_O I think some of them would do it on purpose given the chance.

Yep. It’s a bad time. Hoping *sigh* some,a small percent of people on the fence will decide not to gather with the latest info and some amount of lives and suffering and all the rest will be decreased a tiny bit.

Well, that was certainly a feel good video.

They’ve been telling us this since spring. It’s gonna be bad. It’s worse. this wasn’t hidden information.
why are people surprised or still denying  And still fighting masks and sensible controlled “omg lockdowns” and tracking (keeping in mind that ship might have sailed some places) This is just insane and horrible.
i sometimes -more often lately ha- feel like I’m living in an alternate timeline. What did y’all (general y’all not y’all specifically)
Think was gonna happen?!?!
Arggghhh

Even more insane is state legislators are convening...pandemic? Anyone?

Lawmakers pick leadership, with minimal mask use among GOP

Legislators should caucus remotely, county health officer recommends

You just can't wrap your head around it..

What? Condolezza Rice is now head of and that is whom from the COVID retort came from?.... off to google as to COVID statement

ETA: "On September 1st, 2020 Director Rice became the Hoover Institution's eighth director in its 101 year history and the first woman to hold the position."
Condoleezza Rice

Talk about a "Covid Factory", I just can't believe people who are still going out to eat at restaurants and going to bars. I stopped for take-out at a local place, famous for wings and beer. The place was packed! The patrons were yelling, because there was some sort of sports match, none of them had masks on because they were eating and drinking. It was insanity.

I hustled in, picked up our food, hustled out, and stuck my mask in my "dirty" bag. I don't even want to order take-out any longer. And the place did not seem to have a lot of great air exchange or ventilation.

Were these all young people in their 20s? They feel safe because not very many of them get real sick.

But if it's people in their 40's and up ..... why?

Why would they risk it. Anyone have ideas?

CDC director said they do not recommend closing schools

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention removed guidelines from its website that promoted in-person learning for schools, CDC Director Robert Redfield said they do not recommend closing schools during the COVID pandemic.

Redfield’s announcement on Thursday said that schools can operate with “face to face learning” and can do it “safely and they can do it responsibly.”

“The infections that we’ve identified in schools when they’ve been evaluated were not acquired in schools,” he said.

Instead, he said, the threat was coming from small family gatherings “where people become more comfortable.”

The statement comes days after the Hillreported that documents that promoted in-person learning for schools, which were written by political appointees outside of the CDC, were removed from the website in late October without a public announcement.

I think they are in a bind ... if they close schools some people won't be able to work. Unless they bother to set up systems that will allow for that. And those systems (group day care/whatever for those that need it) may be just as bad as schools for covid spread.

With no bill being passed to extend relief, millions are going to be out of any income on the day after Christmas.

Having said that, NYC (largest school district in the whole country) has just closed its schools, and I think other places are doing this as well.

NYC schools will close after the city reached a 3% Covid positivity rate threshold - CNN

“We see our generation facing challenges as never before in our lifetimes, millions of children are missing out on basic health care, are being cut off from education, and are facing poverty and violence everyday”, the youngsters said.

“The COVID-19 pandemic took away ‘normal’, but for us ‘normal’ was never good enough anyway.

The youth advocates warned that COVID-19 “is not the only danger.”

“Our planet is suffering and climate change is real, inequality and discrimination are real, the stress on our mental health is very real.

Illinois nurse's plea to take COVID seriously brings city council to tears

Just stop.....
Stop thinking this is just like the flu, it isn't .
Stop telling me the survival rate so it's not a big deal, it is a big deal.
Stop saying healthcare workers signed up for this, we didn't.
Stop ignoring science based recommendations of masking, social distancing, hand hygiene, and not gathering in large crowds, they work.
Stop kidding yourself that this isn't going to affect you or someone you love or know, it will.
Stop thinking that only unhealthy people with preexisting medical conditions or elderly people are the ones dying, they aren't the only ones.
Stop being confident that if you get sick from anything, the resources to save you will be readily available, that may not be in this stage of the pandemic.
Stop believing hospitals aren't being overrun because of the massive influx of Covid patients at this moment, they are.
Stop thinking if they make makeshift areas to house more patients there will be properly trained staff to care for them, there may not be.

Stop believing that all frontline healthcare workers are properly protected with PPE, many across the country STILL are not.
Stop ignoring that healthcare workers are also getting sick themselves, it's happening.
Stop believing that doctors are profiting from this pandemic, they aren't.
Stop politicizing this virus, it's a public health crisis
If you are taking this pandemic seriously, doing the best you can to be safe and protect others, THANK YOU.
If you are not, please start now. I am begging you!

Pfizer has filed papers today with the FDA seeking emergency approval of its vac. (Just hearing this on our morning news.)

They say the papers will probaby sit with the FDA for a few weeks, maybe a month, before any approval.

"Friday’s filing would set off a chain of events as the FDA and its independent advisers debate if the shots are ready. If so, still another government group will have to decide how the limited supplies initially are rationed out to anxiously awaiting Americans.

How much vaccine is available and when is a moving target, but initial supplies will be scarce and rationed.
About 25 million may become available for use in the US in December, 30 million in January and 35 million more in February and March, according to information presented to the National Academy of Medicine this week. Recipients will need two doses, three weeks apart."

Pfizer seeks US FDA approval for COVID-19 vaccine’s emergency use

So, about 12.5 million may be vaccinated late this year, another 15 million in Jan, another 17.5 million in Feb/March. Total 45 million vaccinated. (US pop = 331 million)
I wonder how many medical/essential staff people there are in the US.

@Lilibet that cluster of elderly folks is so concerning! Do you know if that was at a care facility?

My neighbor's father lives at Pioneer Village -- have you heard if they have had any outbreaks there? (I don't get to chat with my neighbor much these days to ask how he's doing).

Hi @Auntie Cipation. Yes, the cluster of elderly dying here in Jackson county is very concerning. The list I posted simply said they died “at their residence,” which could be a senior living facility, of course. I have not heard of any cases or deaths at Pioneer Village in Jacksonville.

I check the list the state of Oregon puts out every week for the whole state, included in the exhaustive report linked below starting at page 15. This report is for last week as this week hasn’t been compiled yet. You have to scroll looking for Jackson county as they aren’t grouped by county.

I hope your neighbor’s father stays safe. Pioneer Village is very nice. If he is in independent living, rather than assisted living, he will have less contact with staff who may have Covid. We have friends at Maple Ridge in Ashland and there have been no cases there so far. The administration has been scrupulous, but of course it only takes one asymptomatic employee (or visitor when they were allowed) to ruin things.

This list of recent deaths is such a powerful way to show the impact of Covid in Oregon. It also shows the role of underlying conditions in many if not all the deaths. I wish all states would distribute this kind of information (via TV, radio, internet, newspapers) to help people understand what is going on.

I get my report by email, but local and statewide news does report on it. However, when I read the FB comments after a story, so many are still spouting the same garbage and will not listen to reason from rational commenters. It’s really depressing because these folks don’t WANT to understand anything that might cramp their “free” lifestyle. They are convinced that most people die because of their underlying conditions and not Covid. The government is lying to scare people into submission. Their attitude is that if you’re at risk, stay home...it’s not their problem and they are going to continue “living their life” the way they want to.

EMOTIONAL FALLOUT STILL TO COME

Dr. Paul Archibald, assistant professor within the School of Social Work at the College of Staten Island, said the fallout of the first wave of the coronavirus is expected to leave “an aftermath of a lot of mental health issues once the PTSD kicks in.”

Archibald said the timing of the second wave of coronavirus hospitalizations is especially concerning, as “It takes about six to eight months for the symptoms of PTSD to start showing itself.”

“It’s like me watching somebody get murdered and six months later I’m going through treatment and working through it, symptoms start to show up, and then I see another person get murdered,” Archibald said. “That’s what’s happening.”
