I have really mixed feelings about GoF research.
On the one hand I feel like you, that it is really dangerous.
On the other hand, what do we do when the next SARS, or Covid-19, comes along and we don't have any defense at least partially prepared? We were somewhat lucky this time, there was enough prep that vaccines could be released fairly quickly.
This is where I am as well. So much of the anti-vaccine rhetoric, and the GoF rhetoric is just so opinionated .
Desperately trying to find SOMEONE to blame for this virus gets us nowhere, in the long run. You know, like blaming someone takes away the personal responsibility of it all, takes away the country responsibility.
When we ever learn... I am convinced it will be a combination of events, AND will be wrapped into major changes in animal biology and climate change.
I am finding myself leaning towards scientific writings, rather than opinionated MSM talk, when it comes the the "what are we going to do about all this"???? Education will be the only solution in the future.....
Just a couple of the thousands of articles quoted here:
Research using Gain-of-Function (GoF) techniques is no different with respect to what it can achieve in the long term, at least according to many of the symposium participants. Atlas noted that, although there was no attempt to achieve a consensus, no disagreement was voiced to the repeated claims of various presenters that in the short term GoF research is helpful for adapting viruses to growth in culture and for developing essential animal models for emerging pathogens, such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and escape mutations to understand drug resistance and viral evasion of the immune system.

As the planet heats up, animals big and small, on land and in the sea, are headed to the poles to get out of the heat. That means animals are coming into contact with other animals they normally wouldn’t, and that creates an opportunity for pathogens to get into new hosts.
Many of the root causes of climate change also increase the risk of pandemics.
