Why, to make their client seem less culpable?
He is not, imo.

Yes. Exactly that. Right now, the only thing JK's defense can do is show that he did not pour the gas or set the fire in the hope that it will save him from the DP. It's all they've got so they will need to push it. Everyone knows JK is guilty of a heinous crime and that he should be locked up for the rest of his life. That's pretty much a done deal. JK knows it, the defense team know it. All they are doing at this point is trying to give the jury a reason to sentence him to LWOP.

:twocents: Members of the Petit family have left the courtroom.

Malka Shah, M.D on the stand......had primary responsibility for Hayley's post. GRAPHIC photographs illustrating the soot within her esophagus, larynx, describing how CO kills....she's a fabulous "teacher"

Dr. Petit, Jr. left the courtroom BEFORE her testimony BUT he has heard all of this information.

Has anyone else had a hard time finding a Twitter reporter covering today's testimony? I've gone back to the New Haven Register blogspot.

Medical examiner is on the stand describing Hayley's injuries and explaining death by smoke inhalation. The Petits left before he took the stand.

Horrible! Medical examiner says it's "likely" Hayley died by direct fire.

Hugs to Dr. Petit and his family. How awful for them. Heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.

Salem

Breaking for a recess..............folks ARE being VERY considerate of the family.

Reporters are having a difficult time also...no advance "clue" that graphic photos were coming and HARD to contrast that with the Stop & Shop photos.

:innocent: I'm working on my "no comment" skills right now

:banghead::maddening::banghead:

OVER HEARD COMMENT: That the defense will use the "negative rape kit" as a "saving grace for JK".....THIS from a visiting defense atty I've tangled with before!

NO COMMENT.....BUT UTTER SHOCK! (nah, make that disgust!)

Hang on folks.....Defense turn at Dr. Shah....SHE WILL HOLD UP WELL!!!!!

Discussion RE: Hayley's COD....Asphyxia by smoke inhalation,( compounded by total organ shut down due to massive 1, 2nd and 3rd degree burns)

LOL, it came out FOR THE RECORD that Malka had performed over 6500 post! And then we'll be hearing from H. Wayne Carver, M. D II. ALSO a VERY competent forensic pathologist! :innocent:

BTW: She's quite pleased to be "off the stand"!

joypath, are you in the courtroom or following tweets? Do they even allow tweeting or texting in the courtroom? I was in court last month and they made me put away the book I was reading (which I thought was ridiculous as I was a witness and had no interest in any court business outside of what I was there for).

Oh wow. I thought in theHayes trial the med examainer said the cause of death was smoke inhalation. Maybe I am not remembering that correctly. I thought i was odd that gas could be poured on the girls and on their beds and yet they would have time to die from the smoke. If I rmeember correct Haley was able to escape because the retrains holding her were nylons and they melted, so clearly the fire had reached her. Horrible stuff.

Yes. That's what I recall too. But a reporter tweeted (link below, tweeted at 3:13) that because Hayley's legs were charred, the medical examiner said it was "likely" she died of "direct fire." It sounds like Hayley suffered greatly. What a horror!

IN and out (in a secluded "spot"), got assistance from some helpful OCs. Was in court for my own testimony in another case, slipped in and "called in "favors"! But plying individuals with chocolate works well, also!

BBM/U :twocents: Remember that the COD is identified as the primary reason (biological) why the decedent expired.:innocent: The organ damages from the burns is considered the etiology leading up the COD. In this case, CO substituted for O2 within the body BUT the extensive burns also contributed by pulmonary edema et al. :seeya:

Yes, Haley was found OUTSIDE of the bedroom but was overcome as she neared the stair way and was laying face down.

:twocents: Here's where ALL (the OME staff, included) of us HOPE that she was "out of it" as her burns progressed BUT the OME CAN NOT specifically identify if she were. As she received the primary burns, she was aware. Remember that the degrees of burns were 1, 2 & 3 BUT that does NOt mean that she was alive throughout the entire sequence.
Reality check (:innocent: and this is NOT directly related to this case but a conditional hypothetical :innocent:): the 1st degree burns CAN BE those experienced just before rescue, per se or those on the body where there was significant coverage by another combustible/limited combustible material.

Thank you for your explanations, insight and live coverage, joypath. It really helps put the Twitter reports in perspective.

This case is so heartbreaking. I'm glad the Petits left before the medical examiner's testimony.

What's up with that? Helen U. directed people toward the two tweeters I posted this morning. They mainly kept directing people to read their stories at The Courant (hope I got that right). One did report a little more than the other, but nothing close to what Helen U. offers.

Wish I knew. Wish I could help.

I wondered about the tweeting today too. Seemed very limited. I wondered if there technical difficulties, or miscommunication between reporters, or a new court policy. Guess we'll just see what happens tomorrow.
