Sorry about this, but I think the article is confusing as I read it over a couple of times. I don't think we can rely on this article for the date. It's subject to both interpretations, I think.

I don't know if this is helping at all, but I've been looking at the crimes committed by Defrietas, Brant and other associates to come up with names of other accomplices and locations of crimes. It seems they pretty much committed crimes whenever and wherever. Here's one about a robbery of a grocery store in Mystic (which is close to Ledyard) in 1974. Take was $15,000. Brant, DeFreitas, and a younger guy, Rickie Cochrane (24 at the time) were all named. Apparently DeFrietas, Brant, and Cochrane were all together in prison in Cranford. At the time of the article, Brant and DeFreitas were being held at the correctional institute in Somers awaiting trial for the murders of Carmichael and and the UID.

I like this link primarily because it puts at least someone in this crime crew farther south (closer to where the UID might've called home)... even if it was after the murders.

Here's another report of an escape (again, this is after the murders of Carmichael and girlfriend)... but it involves Defreitas and 3 others, two of which were eventually apprehended in Arkansas:

"Rhode Island escapees will be returned today PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Preparations were being made today for the return of two Rhode Island state prison escapees from Arkansas where they have been held since their capture Friday night. Edward A. Raso, 24, and Charles C. Marchetti, 25, signed waivers Tuesday to return to Rhode Island after pleading guilty to armed robbery charges stemming from a holdup in Forrest City, Ark. A state police spokesman said Tuesday night that four Rhode Island police detectives would leave for Arkansas either today or Thursday to escort the two men back. The men were sentenced to five years in the Circuit Court of Arkansas on the armed robbery charges but Forrest City Police Chief Joe Goff said the charges in Rhode Island would take precedence. Marchetti and Raso were among four inmates, all described as extremely dangerous, who escaped Jan, 27 from the maximum security section of the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. The two other escapees, Richard F. DeFreitas, 35, and Dennis Gomes, 28, remain at large. Raso and Marchetti were arrested Friday night at a roadblock after a Kentucky couple was robbed at a Holiday Inn in Forrest City. An off-duty policemen serving as a security guard noticed the men leaving and took down the license plate number of their car. Arkansas authorities began checking on the men following their arrests and learned Monday that they were wanted in Rhode Island. Marchetti and Raso earlier were identified as being involved in kidnaping incidents in Attleboro, Mass., Jan. 28 and in Nashua, N.H., Jan. 29."

I found a scanned version of an article about the same incident with some additional details online from the Lewiston Evening Journal: http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...qMgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kWgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=2241,1495934

1/27/1975 Edward Raso, Charles Marchetti, Dennis Gomes and Richard DeFreitas escape from Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston, RI

1/28/1975 Raso, Marchetti, Gomes and DeFreitas involved in kidnapping/carjacking in Attleboro, MA of mother and 4-year-old

1/29/1975 Raso & Marchetti involved in kidnapping/carjacking in Nashua, NH of a woman. They drove her to Boston and released her.

~2/6/1975 Raso & Marchetti Rob Kentucky Couple in Forest City, AK

~2/6/1975 Edward Raso and Charles Marchetti Capture in Forest City, AK, DeFrietas and Gomes still at large.

As an aside, prisons back them seem like sieves.

A couple other people who seemed to have helped some combination Rasso, Gomes, DeFreitas and Marchetti after they escaped from Prison in RI in January of 1975 are Wayne Moniz, 20, who supposedly harbored Robert Thibodeau, 22 in Providence, RI. Thibodeau was in possession of the stolen car from Boston, and both were supposed to "have knowledge" of the stolen car.

Gomes was apprehended around Feb. 19, 1975 in Baltimore, MD:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...aMgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kWgFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3626,2758942

In 1978, Gomes and Marchetti were among 15 prisoners transferred out of the prison in RI in an attempt to regain control over the "long-troubled" facility. The 15 were chosen because of the "awesome and frightening power which some of them wield over other inmates..." "...clearly the ones that exercised the leadership and called the shots."

I wonder how organized all of these connections were, or if the more violent, bold, and successful criminals tended to gravitate toward one another when convenient.

before reading the column, i thought maybe the building was in the 20s but the school existed beforehand, but after reading i am inclined to believe it was actually founded when the building was built. i def agree the column was a bit confusing.... i have a feeling a quick call to the city hall, or even an email to the paper could clear it up once and for all if you want to follow up!

This article, in response to the slaying of two prison guards by Walter J. Elliott, and his subsequent murder-suicide with his wife (a pretty outlandish story in itself, though at medium-security Norfolk rather than max-security Walpole), characterizes the 'entrenched' prisoners as 'heavies.'

Another inmate had warned guards that Elliott intended to escape. Because there was no prison matron, Katherine Elliott, wearing a long dress, was permitted to enter the visiting room without being searched. Accounts differ as to whether she brought in the two 9 mm pistols her husband used, or whether he'd gotten them inside and she merely brought the ammo. He ordered the three guards in the visitor room to the ground, and when the one at the desk didn't promptly comply he swore and shot the guy. He and his wife passed towards the interior of the prison, rather than try to get out the entrance. He returned momentarily to apologize to the other people in the visiting room, then went to the grounds with his wife, where he shot another guard. They strolled across the prison yard, stopping to kiss, and then barricaded themselves in a dormitory. In this romanticized account, they made love while listening to Irish music on a phonograph that Walter had borrowed for the occasion, then he shot her in the head and himself in the chest--because society, man. They were discovered dead after police fired an enormous quantity of tear-gas into the dormitory and broke down the door.

That happened, I think, at just about the time some of our familiar inmates were planning a breakout from Walpole that was thwarted. It caused a political firestorm, and brought into question the whole 'community rehabilitation' model in Massachusetts. Brant, DeFreitas, Carmichael and Brown all escaped custody several times. Carmichael and Brown's final escape together seems to have been the result of authorities not informing the deputed drivers that these guys had a history, and transporting them using a car without a security cage. I haven't seen a good explanation for how they got their cuffs off and snatched one of their drivers' guns. A similar thing happened when Brant was mistaken for a lawyer, and police let him just walk out of a courthouse, whereon he stole a car from a nearby used car dealership.

You are misreading this article. There was a new BUILDING built for the high school not junior high, but the school itself had already been in existence. I THINK THIS IS A VERY VALID POSSIBILITY. When you think about the placement of the letters on the ring, their school motto really makes sense. it also leads me back to the missing Miss Sheehy as a possibility.

Yes, I see how it can be interpreted either way. Still need to confirm if the school was in existence in 1917.

How are you connecting Denise Sheehy to the school? Did she have relatives in Niagara? She was from Queens.

Ahahaha!

Something else rather interesting:

"Brant who has spent most of his adult life in prison was once president of a prison Jaycee chapter that won seven state awards in 1967. He was also director of Challenge House a halfway house for prison inmates"

http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...1977-06-06/page-16+&cd=27&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Also, late last night I discovered there was/is a Northern Junior High School in both Quincy, MA and Somerville, MA. I haven't had time to do any additional research so I don't know if either of them was founded or existed in 1917.

Another thing, I've been wondering if Carmichael had relatives in NC or TN?

Yeah, as part of his testimony, DeFreitas claimed that Brant was always trying to get him to go straight. As we've discussed before, Brant had a pretty good alibi, but the jury didn't buy it, though the witness had married a cop in the interim.

Excellent! Looks like the one in Somerville was in existence in 1917, as this book was published in 1916:

And the one in Quincy was built in 1926.

I wondered about Carmichael having relatives in TN and NC (and KY and WV) too. Carmichael is a very classic southern name and there are LOTS of them in these parts. His father (born in GA) had lots of siblings IIR. I have also been wondering if Carmichael himself was CM Fox Jr. And if they were already living together in NJ.

I'm thinking this is the James Gardner who testified against Defreitas:

BANK ROBBER SENTENCED ERIE, Pa. (AP) James Gardner, 35, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail 'for the June armed robbery of the central mall office of the Marine Bank here. Gardner was to be returned to Rhode Island, where he faces charges in a pair of gangland - style killings. Inc.

Yeah, that's him. DeFreitas claimed in court that Gardner was framing him because Gardner wanted to be able to serve out his latest sentence closer to his girlfriend in exchange for his testimony and the immunity. Gardner chose not to answer certain questions about his out-of-state criminal activities at the advice of his lawyers, citing his right not to self-incriminate.

Thanks for confirming!

Do you think Gardner, Rainello and Iemma ended up in "witness protection"?

I found a gentleman who is very familiar with organized crime in the Boston area during this time period. He's written several books, was involved with "court tv", and has quite an online presence. I sent him a quick email asking if he might take a look at this case (I figured it couldn't hurt). 'No idea if he will respond but I will post here if he does.

I don't know that Iemma really did anything that would require her to enter witness protection. Assuming Gardner ever got out, he probably would have, and Rainello, is a likely program participant, too. I know that DeFreitas complained that Gardner turned an awful lot of states' testimony after he got busted for the Erie job. I get the feeling that DeFreitas was pretty disappointed in him, and felt that Gardner had sold out in the face of a long prison term. By the time of the trial, in '76, Gardner had the reputation of being a snitch, which may explain why so many counter-snitches from prison were willing to testify they'd heard Gardner and Robichaud did it, besides which . . . Robichaud was conveniently dead. At any rate, their testimony was excluded from the jury as hearsay.

I don't post here often but, this case has peaked my interest.
I think Denise Sheehy and the picture on the 1st page of the thread look very similar.
