As I posted elsewhere in 2006, IMO, the concept of “fame terrorist” is a significant factor for some serial killers, mass murderers, and spree killers [edited]:

[...]

In recent years some new factors have been added to the killing formula ... mobility, easy access to *advertiser censored*, the internet, and the increasing reinforcing role of the media and related “fame.” The “successful” killer is one of the most powerful members of our society, even after incarceration. I believe these and other factors have combined to facilitate the development of new types of killers, those for whom the killing is merely incidental to gain access to the media and the public, much like a terrorist. Perhaps we should call them “fame terrorists” instead of serial killers, mass murderers, or spree killers. They certainly are not simply sexual sadists, regardless of their sexual fantasies and related lifestyles.

From what I understand, people who commit that type of crime, collect "injustices" they perceive were committed against them. So, not necessarily.

True, that could very well be the case here. My thoughts at the moment, however, are that he possibly couldn't live up to what was expected of him to continue receiving the grant money. Still no justification for what he did. except perhaps in his own mind.

It slipped by a bit under the wire matou..

Thanks orora, I was looking in the comments but it's right in the text:

A poor last semester
The Washington Post reported that a neuroscience faculty member at Colorado who said he taught Holmes said he immediately thought of Holmes when he heard that a student was accused of the shooting. The faculty member said Holmes was "very quiet, strangely quiet in class" and seemed "socially off."
Holmes did very poorly on his comprehensive exams last semester, the instructor told the Post, and the school was considering placing him on academic probation, but was not considering expulsion.

Often, motivation for mass murder is wanting revenge on society for perceived injustices. And not necessarily very recent injustices.

I'd like to add that grad school isnt an idyllic place either...lots of injustices, real or otherwise, to perceive. I'd like to know what kind of relationship, if any, J had with his mentor. ("If any" because programs differ on exactly when a student starts to work closely with a mentor and shift his primary focus from class work to research.)

It would be interesting to hear what his fellow McDonalds employees would have to say about him. The normal folk interacting with him and he meeting younger women outside of an institutionalized intellectual setting. Did something happen there? Some sort of rejection, disappointment, life altering /affirming reaction to alter/steer his course. Seems his return from his time there was the first notice of something out of place. Depression even.

Agree. Cumulative. Just throwing this out but did he gain self satisfaction from those brief moments of power he had. With his knowledge he could have thrown a bomb in the Theatre. He chose to do the up close and personal. Calmly and methodically according to reports. Yet the one act he couldn't be there for he chose bombs. Interesting.

Sadness vs. sympathy: The parents of killers

It's of course impossible to try and imagine the difficult situation they now find themselves in. But we know from other parents of alleged and convicted killers that many seem to find themselves struggling to reconcile their innate loyalty to their child with the their own varying sense of guilt and sadness for the pain experienced by victims' families and disbelief a person they raised could commit such atrocities.

JMO, a sure way to depression is to start a list of all the bad things that have been happening to you, stick to yourself, and have a pity party.

The "thing" is this.. Aka the problem.. Ok.. Yes, the signs were there..
-Awkward socially..

-Introverted..

-According to classmates within the last year he only spoke when spoken to in class and even then spoke in a monotone voice..

-neighbors from his hometown say they felt he was depressed after graduating top of class with honors for his B.S. and was holding a job at McDonalds.

-witnesses stating that on July 1st a pink haired, wide eyed guy who seemed out of it and put off bad vibes, entering a hunting store to have his scope put on his gun..

-neighbors at his apt state that he was extremely quiet, even reclusive and did not speak when spoken to.

-neighbors say that he recently dyed his hair an unnatural bright red..

-the owner of a gun range states that he was initially suspicious that a new applicant did not fully complete the application to use his private gun range and signed off his email with "cheers"..Therefor the owner calls him up 3times to which he is extremely weirded out when each time he reached his answering machine that was creepy to say the least..

-supposedly some neighbors had complained of loud music, strange lights, and newspaper covering his apt windows.

Ok there's the list right off the top of my head of the long litany of "signs" that were there.. NOW JUST WHY IN THE HELL WASNT SOMETHING DONE TO STOP THIS OBVIOUSLY PROGRESSING MADMAN?!?!

The answer to that is quite simple and something people ARE NOT AT ALL TAKING INTO ACCOUNT, NOR LOOKING AT REALISTICALLY(and believe me I get why.. People are angry..scared.. And want there to be an easy answer that can quiet our fears by stopping this in the future)..

Quite honestly that's just not realistic.. The answers aren't that easy, nor cut and dry.. Sure to us now looking at the above quick list of major signs that were there.. It appears as tho insane that he was not stopped.. That there was not intervention into this mad man and his slow descent into madness..

But look again at the list.. NOTICE THAT NO ONE GROUP WAS PRIVY TO ALL OF THESE "signs".. They are only in hindsight crystal clear and compiled from WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT HERE.. A MULTITUDE OF MANY SOURCES!!!

No one person, no one group of people knew all of these happenings.. In fact by far and wide each individual, or group of people only knew of ONE, POSSIBLY TWO OF THIS NOW LONG COMPILATION OF SIGNS..

-the students just knew of an introverted, shy nerd(but for all they knew he couldve been a more outgoing young man outside of school functions)

-the neighbors just knew of a reclusive, quiet tenant(but for all they knew he was the life of the party at school, work or elsewhere)

-the neighbors in his hometown say they believed he was depressed over his job at McDonalds(well what top of the class college graduate wouldn't be depressed flipping burgers after all his years of hard *advertiser censored* work for his degree)

-the guy at the hunting store who saw a pink haired, wide eyed guy that gave a bad vibe as he was getting his scope put on(he hadnt a clue that this man just a few months prior was nothing like what walked in that store.. He hadn't a friggin clue this young man had over the course of a couple months bought $10,000 worth of artillery/ammo)

-the gun range owner knew nothing but that his latest applicant in his opinion was a weirdo from hell who had a creepy answering machine msg and signed off with "cheers"[tho I'm still baffled on why he thought "cheers" was odd]..

If any one of these people had gone to police with their gut instinct you do realize NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE..
So, yes the precursors were there.. But ONLY AFTER COMPILING THE LIST OF SIGNS FROM AN ENTIRE MULTITUDE OF PEOPLE..

There is no easy answers here and there is no simplified way to guarantee we have any control whatsoever from stopping this in the future.. I know thats not what everyone wants to hear but IMO its the Gods honest truth..

All jmo, tho!

I would like to know more about the program JH was in.

My program is small; only 6 of us started the year I did. We were very tight-knit and not competitive with each other. We studied a lot together, which was a lifesaver for me, as I didn't have much background in chemistry and had to work very hard to catch up. Even when I was sure I was in over my head, it kept me from becoming isolated or giving up. I really don't know if I would've stuck with it if I hadn't had that kind of support during my first year.

Awesome post SmoothOperator. Yes how do we know. They walk amongst us.

I haven't noticed anyone mention this, but I may have missed it. I was wondering if the move from San Diego to Colorado was also hard on JH. (Doesn't excuse anything, but could have added to the stress). Moving alone, adjusting, in his early 20s. He didn't have any friends/family in CO before arriving, did he? Had he moved much before?

Interesting that the Neuroscience Phd program link at UC Denver is password protected. I wonder if it was before all this happened.

Why did he say he was the Joker? It was Jim Carrey's "Riddler" character that had the orange hair.
