Why the movie theatre?
I would like to know more about the program JH was in.
My program is small; only 6 of us started the year I did. We were very tight-knit and not competitive with each other. We studied a lot together, which was a lifesaver for me, as I didn't have much background in chemistry and had to work very hard to catch up. Even when I was sure I was in over my head, it kept me from becoming isolated or giving up. I really don't know if I would've stuck with it if I hadn't had that kind of support during my first year.
I'd like to add that grad school isnt an idyllic place either...lots of injustices, real or otherwise, to perceive. I'd like to know what kind of relationship, if any, J had with his mentor. ("If any" because programs differ on exactly when a student starts to work closely with a mentor and shift his primary focus from class work to research.)
A dark theater with a large amount of unsuspecting victims - and the midnight premiere of that particular movie. The perfect storm........in his mind.
MOO
I don't think many people who graduated college would be happy flipping burgers at McDonalds.
While he may have worked at McDonalds, I doubt he had much tenure. What I am saying is I really do not think he had to or did for any real length of time.
Clearly money was not an issue by his purchases.
Yes Holmes' advisor/mentor in his Doctoral program would likely have a strong general opinion about him and his chronological behavior, backed by at least a few face to face consultations. JH's behavior or his perceived attitude in the classroom setting can say alot about his recent condition or state of mind. IMO if he was able to confine his growing plot and outward appearance to appear normal and free from any sort of mania, then all fingers point to him being a true psychopath.
His mentor might be state's witness right now. We probably won't hear from him until around trial time.
Maybe he isn't a psychopath? Maybe he just decided one day it'd be really awesome to kill people? That doesn't mean he didn't care about his family or friends or whatever. He just had a fantasy that he chose to go through with.

Good for you. You should be very proud of yourself. Our Society is so big in so many ways things just are unnoticed.
Is Tenure not granted after the PHD? And no guarantee of when? Confused here on the Tenure.
