From the Telegraph's news feed in the 5.59am summary:

However neither the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant nor al-Qaeda have, as yet, claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft.

In addition, a US review of satellite imagery has not, thus far, shown any evidence of an explosion having taken place.

I'm starting to wonder if there was a struggle in the cockpit between the pilot and co-pilot which led to the plane's strange girations, or if it was a repeat of the Germanwings case. There was the strange case of the Egyptair flight 990 which dived into the Atlantic back in 1999 which US authorities believed was due to co-pilot suicide while the Egyptian authorities flatly denied.

If it was any normal malfunction the pilots would have said something.

Not necessarily. Pilot training for dealing with technical issues teaches:

1. Aviate (keep the plane in the air)
2. Navigate (going in the right direction)
3. Communicate.

In a real emergency they are too busy trying to keep the plane in the air to worry about talking to ATC.

What about the pingers? If it's in water, won't the pingers be emiting pings? *mh370 memories*

A320 dont "float".

Actually they can. They are fitted with a ditch switch that closes and seals all the various inlets and outlets ahead of a planned ditching.

US Airways flight 1549 sank in the Hudson partly because the crew did not activate the switch and partly because the landing tore holes in the fuselage bigger than the ones that would have been closed by the ditch switch.

With a sealed and unbreached hull, an A320 can float almost indefinitely.

Maybe a terrorist took over in the cockpit, and destroyed all radar capabilities. Then, maybe Terrorist flew the plane somewhere, and landed it, all undetected.

Why are we referring to an airplane as she instead of it

I was thinking about the pingers yesterday. Get some darn boats in the water and try listening for the pingers. Immediately.

But no. They will wait about 30 days looking for the plane debri and then think about the pingers about the time they tell us the batteries on the pingers are about to run out. :)

Your right in actual fact most hurricanes and in particular boats/nautical are referred to "she"......there are certain airlines which will have a female name painted to their fuesalage, to date I have never seen a masculine notation.

WIsh I knew how to look up that information, thank you so much.

I'm starting to think flying is not worth it. The last time for me was in 2007 to Sharm-el-Sheikh and I do think it was the last for me.

RIP to all on board. So devastating especially as there were children who hadn't even begun to live their lives.
