EXCLUSIVE: Family of Murdered Clearwater Couple Still Grieving
EXCLUSIVE: In New Interviews, Family of Murdered Clearwater Couple Share Ongoing Grief
PUBLISHED 3:56 PM EDT Jun. 21, 2019
CLEARWATER, Fla. — While the search for suspects in the murders of David and Mina Swan in September, 2018 continues, the couple's adult children each still struggle with feelings of horror and denial in the aftermath of the crime.

It’s an unsolved double murder that left a Clearwater neighborhood stunned: a beloved elderly couple shot and killed inside their home.
[...]

Detectives are now urging anyone who ever came into contact with the Swans to come forward and speak with Clearwater Police. The number to call is (727) 562-4141.

The reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case is now up to $50,000.

EXCLUSIVE: Family of Murdered Clearwater Couple Still Grieving

I hope they solve this soon, so sad to live such a full and busy life even at their age and to have it snuffed out.

3 minute video has some interesting comments not quoted in news article:
David’s “daughter flew in from out of state." “Traveled all the way from Chicago just for this interview.”
“He would pay out of his own pocket so he would lose money so that other people didn’t.”

Peculiar? . . . Daughters were apparently interviewed by BayNEWS9 at separate locations in Pinellas County. David's daughter appears to be in hotel; Mina's daughter in a house.

David's estate administration has an entry on 02/21/2019 - DECLARATION THAT PROCEEDING IS ADVERSE

IANAL but the repeated "orders" for "production of assets" by the estate strikes me as a sign of a potential problem (I am guessing that "SS", the petitioner, is David's son?)...

And here's a link to Mina's estate administration: ...https://ccmspa.pinellascounty.org/PublicAccess/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=18196513

I think that you've picked up on something interesting in that interview above, SeesSeas...maybe the relationship between the step-siblings is a bit rocky?

That's interesting to me. I can't believe a building permit was required to replace an entry door?? And quite an expensive one at that.

When I initially found the permit, I figured perhaps it was the garage door - because of the $3,000 cost!
Permit is required in City of Clearwater for exterior doors. Many don't agree and some don't get a permit. IMO
Here is a photo of what I would consider an 'entry door' at the residence:

Thanks for that info. I'd never heard of such a thing- permits for exterior entry doors. I could possibly see it as a HOA requirement, or approval if a home is in a historical district- something like that.
I imagine LE has thoroughly checked that out, looking for any possible connections to the Swans' murder, but it's a nugget.

Does anyone know the value of their property and what's become of it?

Maybe there wasn't a permit for a 2-car garage-door. Per City of Clearwater online records for permits, there isn't a permit for a garage door. Records are reflected back to 1998. Here are the most recent permits issued, 2011-2018:

Looking at the last image, I am flummoxed: what possible reasons could DS have had to encourage MS to let their homeowners' insurance policy lapse?

if this fund started in 2006, and DS followed his intended payment schedule, the account would have contained about $38,500 ($3500 per year for 11 years) at the time of their deaths, (that’s assuming they never drew on it). Maybe DS’s son is attempting to claim it as part of DS’s estate? Interested to hear what others think the relevance of this particular document is...

MS's daughter is including $42,000 in the PROBATE STATEMENT OF CLAIM in a civil case against DS's estate. It is listed in EXHIBIT A as "Promissory Note for Insurance ($3,500 annually) $42,000.00".
$3,500 x 12 years (2007-2018) = $42,000
Some people don't agree with purchasing homeowners insurance, especially elderly who travel frequently. The rationale is this. . . if the home is demolished by hurricane, fire, etc., the decision to rebuild will NOT be a replacement of the current house. The choice would be to downsize significantly or to possibly sell the land and move elsewhere. In our area of Florida, many who travel choose to purchase an RV and live in an RV travel park.
I have minimal insurance coverage on my house. If the next hurricane destroys my house, I would like a 'tiny house'.

That's very interesting info to me, so thanks for that! Just reading DS letter to MS was very puzzling to me, but perhaps now it makes a little more sense- especially if they were a couple who dotted the i's and crossed the t's re: their finances. It seems they were both very astute.

The wording of the DEC 2006 letter from DS to MS leads me to believe that MS was reluctant to cancel the homeowners insurance. I think it was 'against the grain' of her lifestyle. DS was a CPA with decades of financial experience, likely savvy at risk vs benefit decisions. $3,500 was probably the amount of the annual insurance premium. It seems that the letter to MS was his way of reassuring her that a decision to forgo maintaining the insurance would not impact her adversely; that she could 'save' the $3,500 that he promised to pay her each year, and that he would also cover any potential losses beyond the amount saved.

What is puzzling to me is that the $ half-million $ lawsuit alleges that DS "failed to make payments as agreed in the Note" and "such failure was a breach of agreement".

In addition, the lawsuit alleges that DS transferred jointly held funds "into an account or to multiple accounts in which neither Mina nor her Estate had/has any interest; and that DS "executed such transfers without the knowledge or consent of Mina."
