You know, the scary thing is, if there was no video tape of this monster taking Carlie, he might have never been caught and he would have been out there to do this to another child. ...
I agree. What a miracle that there was a tape of this abduction. I am sure that this guy was in total shock that he was caught on tape. What are the odds of this--one in a million? If it had not been for this tape, the Amber Alert would not have been activated for this child because LE couldn't say that she didn't run away. This bothers me. Don't the parents know the child best? Wouldn't the school and parents know if the child was troubled? How many 11-year-olds run away from home? Of the ones that do, wouldn't they go to a friend's home? After all, she was just at a slumber party. Does it make sense that this child would leave the slumber party under the pretense of heading home? Wouldn't she have stayed at that house if she didn't want to go home? Maybe there is more involved, but I felt the Amber Alert should have been activated immediately.

I don't know how many defense classes, teach you to lay down, or plop your butt down on the ground and scream, kick......they won't try to drag you, or pick you up! It would be a fight. Best to do it.

This person could have said, "your mom has been hurt and they sent me to take you to the hospital". Or that MONEY works to lure many children, or promise of being in a video or something. Kids shouldn't even be given a password. They should just steer clear of any and all strangers. Especially one who would grab your arm and lead you away. Some kids go into shock but it's best if we teach them to PLOP, DROP and FIGHT! Who wants to tangle with a kid that does that. It's better to do it then, then end up in a field dead and gone. Everyone needs to have a talk with their kids and have them watch the video. Everytime you talk to a stranger, he or she has the potential to do you harm. It's what we need to teach.

Poor Karlie! (I know this is bad), but from the video she looks much older than most 11 year olds, and the way she's dressed is pretty provocative. Not that she shouldn't be allowed to wear that, but that there are some creton criminals out that, that are very stimulated by these young gals with low shirts, sexy midriff and all dolled up. Something in looking like a "goth" most of the time. You don't hear of too many goth girls, or ugly girls being kidnapped. Always the beautiful, young ones. Makes me sick to my stomach. I too cried at this loss, and I don't even know her. This world has changed so much from when I was that age. I wouldn't dare let my kids walk anywhere alone these days. My daughter is 25 and works at the mall, and I still get scared for her coming home that someone will abduct her. She knows and we have talks almost daily about this type of thing (Drew Sjodin)....she would never WILLINGLY go anywhere with anyone. So at least I know it would be kidnapping from the bat. God pray for our children that he keep them safe.

And those rat bastards that commit these crimes, string them up from the highest branch and let them rot!

:behindbar  :behindbar

What really saddened me to hear today, was that the family had to go to the crime scene to identify Carlie's body. What a nightmare!!! Can anyone even imagine having to do that?

Folks, this guy has done this before!!! No way he got caught the first time. Turns out he actually is a paint and body man? Thats why his car looks like a new car even though its a 1992 model. This car has a fresh paint job on it right? What color was it before? How long ago did he paint it? My experience with persons who work in there trade is they generally are in need of the trade they ply such as mechanics, carpenters, etc.

He quit working around August? Heaven Ross came up missing in August. Why wear the uniform? I believe he used the uniform like an authority figure? He must have known her habits (the car wash was closed). Why drop her behind a church? Searches mainly go about 100 yards from a road (she was found 150 yards, and he looks to be very muscular although he may have driven the extra fifty yards). Its kind of a sacred place for most of us and the last place we would look. (We're guilty for walking past churches ourselves here in Nashville looking for Tabitha). Where is he from originally? How long has he lived in Florida?

One last thing. In the video Carlie pulls her left arm back as he takes her arm and leads her away. She had an instinct to not go but something he said (like her moms name) made her reject those instincts.

Sunnmoon,

I disagree that Carlie was dressed provocatively. I waited to see the video again and took special note of the clothes she was wearing. You saw NO skin exposed by her tummy and I would hardly call the shirt she was wearing low cut. Maybe you should look at the video again.

Thank you, Maketoast! So sad about the outcome. The only thing I can hope is that she was killed quickly, since her body was found close to the spot where she was abducted.

Even if this was the caase of a runaway, why not put an Amber alert out anyway? Why would you allow an 11 yr. old to be out there somewhere whether she was abducted or went on her own free will? I say put the the Amber alert out ASAP! Although I have not heard the details,I did hear the place where she was found was not very far from the carwash. I'm assuming what ever this monster did to her was done within minutes, but it could help in the future. I just don't understand how someone who is arrested 16xs in 10 yrs is out walking the streets. He will get the death penalty and the judge that overlooked his parol violation should be held accountable.

Johnny,

I agree that this is probably not the first time he's done this. He doesn't look worried at all in that video tape. He's not looking around and just goes over and grabs her. If this was his first time, I'm sure he would have been a little more nervous. I think they should look at him for those other girls that are missing. They mentioned them yesterday on one of these shows.

It was a tearjerker to watch the sheriff speak this morning. I pray for strength for her family and friends to get through this, if they ever do. The guy who did this is really a selfish, evil, man. At minimum, it's good she was near a church, but alas, it was a very sad end. What a tragedy.

It may just depend on the area people live in, but I thought she was dressed a little provocatively for an eleven year old also. That is in no way to say this was her fault, but that our standards of what is allowed for children to wear has altered dramatically since I was 11, and I'm still in my 20s. Her clothing was a little tight (not revealing) and she does look older. I think we have seen so much skin from Britney, Christina and others that when we do see girls that are clothed from head to foot, we think, "hey, she's not dressed provocatively" but tend to overlook the cut of the jeans/shirts and the tightness of the clothing.

Just want to say (before I get blasted) that I don't see anything WRONG with what Carlie was wearing, but the clothes do help project an image of her being older than 11. And that's probably because she is a tall girl, and had a hard time finding clothes that would fit her age and height. My daughter is 7, but very tall, and I have an extremely hard time finding things for her to wear that are age appropriate.

GOD bless Carlie's family. My heart and prayers go out to them. I hope they fry the b!@#$%$ for what he has stolen from this family. Hell's gonna be hot.

I agree that Carlie did not seem dressed in a provocative way... she just looked like a kid to me. She definately looked older than 11 though, my daughter is 10 and is not where near that mature looking... she is only 80 lbs, where Carile was 120.

I think the SOB has done this before... he seemed way too cool in the video, he was purposeful, confident in his movements, in no way nervous looking.

Can you believe we all witnessed the last moments of this little girls life?

Her last image - just walking down the street, nothing on her mind, just a little girl... and the next thing this monster is there.. I swear that image of him reaching for her arm is going to haunt me forever.

The Boogey man is real folks... talk to your kids

God Bless Carlie, & her family and all the other victims out there.

I don't remember how old I was but I remember my mom telling me that I should never get in someones car. She said to fight my best even if they had a weapon, because once they get you in the car, they plan to kill you. That was a very powerful message and so true.

I feel helpless as well. What can we do? I mean "we" as in websleuths? We all seem to have something in common, and that is a need for justice and protection of children. That is the whole reason I began coming here in the first place. Danielle Van Dam lured me here. She was my son's age.

I also don't think it's a "this day and age" thing. When I was in third grade a friend and classmate was murdered over the summer. From what I remember of the story she was helping a couple move into a new house and they took her to an abandoned building and pushed her out the window. I'm sure there was more to the story, but it was a long time ago. If anyone lives in the Cleveland Ohio area I would sure like some help digging this information up. I know her name was Karen Kohler, I may have the last name spelled wrong. Anyway, I'm just saying this has always been going on, its just getting more attention.

I'm not even sure what she was wearing, which makes me believe that it wasn't particularly noteworthy or unusual for a girl her age. I think people of older generations will always think that the younger ones aren't dressing appropriately. It's happened since the beginning of time or clothing, at least.

Anyhow, even if what she was wearing did make her look older, we're not talking about statutory rape here. As far as I know, I don't believe there is a legal age where it's okay to abduct, rape and murder someone. This guy had very criminal intentions from the moment he laid eyes on Carlie and it was not provoked by her looking 15 or 45.

I'm not about censoring anyone. It's just that when people start discussing clothes or even the amount of freedom/leeway v. supervision a child is receiving, I think it excuses or at least takes part of the blame away from the criminal who did it. If someone walks around in a bikini and high heels, I'd say they're certainly attracting attention to themselves and most men would probably stare. But what's NOT a normal reaction is to want to abduct, rape or murder her. This is just deviant.

 THIS IS TRAGIC.. I'M SO ANGRY..!!

HIND SIGHT IS 20/20, AWARENESS IS EVERYTHING..!!

We must educate our children better, won't stop the preditors, but may save a few children..!!

My niece was grabbed by a man who pull up to bunch of her freinds, and her walking home from a slumber party several years ago.. !@! SHE BROKE LOOSE FROM HIS GRIP, AND RAN OUT OF HER SHOES HOME, AS DID ALL THE OTHER GIRLS..!!

11 is to young for a child to be walking alone ever..!! If she left the slumber party early, where was the parent in charge of the girls.

Why didn't the parents offer her a ride home, or have her call her parents.????? No child walks to a gathering that I'm associated with. I will drive all day, and night getting them there, and taking them home.. IF THAT'S WHAT IT TAKES..!! EVEN IF YOU LIVE ACROSS THE STREET, OR NEXT DOOR.. I WILL WALK THE CHILD TO THE DOOR, AND LEAVE THEM IN THE CARE OF AN ADULT.. NOT ADULT HOME, BACK THEY GO WITH ME, I WON'T LET A CHILD WALK.. I DON'T CARE WHAT THE PARENTS SAY, YOU GET ESCORTED HOME, IN THE CAR OR ON FOOT...BUT NOT BY YOURSELF, AND ALL THE PARENTS WOULD KNOW THIS BEFORE, SO THERE IS NOT DOUBT HOW THINGS WILL BE DONE!!

WE AS PARENTS HAVE TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN BETTER, WE MUST WORK TOGETHER. THEY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO REACT..!!

I teach all the children I come in contact with, that no ADULT needs help from a child for anything EVER... THEY CAN GO ASK AN ADULT PERIOD...!! THAT'S A RED FLAG RIGHT THERE..!!

I'M SO ANGRY..!! SORRY.. THIS JUST MAKES ME ILL..!!

(The following is not a response to Carlie's choice of clothing, but a statement about little girls' clothing in general ...)

I was in the mall a few weeks ago and I walked past The Limited Too store. My four-year old wanted to go in. I took one look at the clothing in the window and I was shocked. The clothing they were selling, for young girls, was incredibly sexy and provocative!!! Now, I'm no prude, but I DO NOT want to have six and seven year old girls dressing like Britney Spears!!! And my four-year old was attracted to the clothing they were selling in that store. The jeans were very tight, hip-huggers with very low waist lines. The shirts were short, tight, brightly colored shirts. I don't think these items are appropriate for the age group stores like this are targeting!

If you have young girls, you can probably relate to what I am saying. Even Target has some questionable items in their little girls' department. I know it will be hard as my girls get older. I'm sure they are going to see these items and want them, especially if other little girls have clothes that are similar.

Okay, coming down from my soap box now ...

I was going to open a thread about this but figured everyone had heard by now. So very tragic. I instantly imagined little Laci welcoming her into Heaven.

Did you see the Today Show this morning? Erin Runnion, one of my all time favorites, was on there and she made some very good points on how to help kids to be protected, both by themselves and what adults can do. Katie interviewed her, and Katie made some great points, too.
