Mays does not have much contact with Dee's biological father but knows he does not approve of her decision to let Dee wear to skirts to school and go by a new name.Dee's biological father did not want his name used in this story but said by phone from his home in Pennsylvania that he wants what is best for his child, whom he still calls Dante and refers to as his son.
"Bottom line, whatever my child wants I will support him in whatever way he wants to go," he said. "I want him to be happy in whatever it is life has to offer him I just don't want him to have to struggle to have to get there."
Dee's father said he thinks given Dee's disabilities, the transition is something that should be put off until she is of legal age. In some ways, he worries whether Mays is forcing the change on Dee .
"I know there are going to be struggles in life," her biological father continued. "But I just think the struggles don't have to come so early if they're not necessary."
Even Mays' husband, Dee's step-father, felt that way at first. These days, he's buying Dee Wonder Woman earrings and calling her by her chosen name.
