Trial delayed to August 2017
Keishanna Thomas had been scheduled to stand trial beginning Nov. 28. But Circuit Judge Susan Maulucci granted a continuance in the case, delaying the trial. Thomas is now scheduled to stand trial during the two-week period beginning Aug. 21.

Issues concerning Janiya’s cause of death that could not be fully explored by November were among the reasons cited by Assistant Public Defender Franklin Roberts in his motion for the delay, according to court records.

Thomas is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and abuse of a dead body for the abuse investigators say she inflicted on Janiya. If convicted, she faces an automatic sentence of life in prison.

She is also facing a separate charge of child abuse related to Janiya’s brother.

The defense attorney for Keishanna Thomas, the Bradenton woman charged with killing her 11-year-old daughter Janiya and then hiding her body in a freezer, wants her murder trial moved out of Manatee County because of the publicity the case has received.

On Tuesday, Thomas appeared before Circuit Judge Susan Maulucci where her defense attorney indicated he intended to request a change of venue because of the amount of local and national attention the case has received.

Assistant Public Defender Franklin Roberts also requested that potential jurors be questioned individually about any prior knowledge they have about the case and about any biases they may have because of the involvement of children in the case. Maulucci granted the request.

To ensure the case will be ready to go to trial in August, the attorneys also agreed to deadlines by which all discovery must be presented and hearings set for any remaining motions.

Public Defender’s Office cites its survey for why Keishanna Thomas can’t get a fair murder trial in Bradenton

On Wednesday afternoon, Thomas appeared before Circuit Judge Susan Maulucci as Assistant Public Defender Franklin Roberts and Assistant State Attorney Art Brown argued details regarding a court order for her to provide a forensic document expert handwriting samples. Attorneys also discussed scheduling time for a hearing to consider a change of venue request.

In a formal motion filed with the court, Roberts cites the extensive media coverage the case has drawn and the results of a survey conducted by his office’s chief investigator as to why Thomas could not get a fair trial in Manatee County. The survey was conducted on prospective jurors, according to the motion, but the parameters of the survey including questions asked, responses or sample size have not been made public.

Thomas already had been previously ordered to provide the writing samples, but at the time she was to provide them Roberts objected, citing a potential violation to her constitutional right against self-incrimination. Roberts argued that he should be allowed to know ahead of time what she would be asked to write.

Brown, disagreed, saying that it would enable Thomas to disguise her handwriting if her defense team would be given advance notice of what she would be asked to write.

“That is not an appropriate procedure to get accurate results,” Brown said.

The first-degree murder trial of Keishanna Thomas is scheduled to begin Aug. 21 in a case that has captured national attention.

Although it will be painful for her to listen to details about how she died, one of Janiya’s relatives on Sunday said it is important she be in the courtroom to honor the memory of Janiya.

“We’ll be there,” Lue Emma Watson said during, “The Second Annual Celebration of Life for Our Angel, Janiya Thomas,” which drew about 30 people to Lincoln Park on Sunday.

I am not sure how I feel about the extended family here. Where were their tears and sorrow when this child was alive and in need of saving?

RIH Janiya, justice has been served :rose:

Thank goodness the living children don't have to testify against this monstrous person. Finally, she does an appropriate parental thing.

I am so glad to see that the remaining children will not have to testify and relive that traumatic time of their lives.

Janiya was such a beautiful, innocent child who deserved so much more out of life.
I hope the bio mom serves each and every day of her sentence, with no reduction of time for good behavior!

So she got 95 years? or just 65 years? Either way - Janiya got JUSTICE!!

She got 65 years since the sentences run concurrently. If the judge had issued them consecutively, then it would have been closer to 90 years.
