There won't be an identification until tonight at the earliest of the girl found dead in a Georgia landfill this afternoon, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Trash from Clay County where Somer disappeared is dumped in the Georgia landfill and police pinpointed where specifically the trash from that area is. Mahla said it is unclear if the trash where the body was found was dumped this morning or Tuesday.

Charlton County officials requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation come to the scene after the body was found. Clay County authorities are also there along with GBI special agents and a crime scene specialist.

"They are a dangerous character. They are obviously picking up children and killing them," said Wylie Hodges, of Crimestoppers, referring to the person responsible for the death of the child found.

There are two candlelight vigils tonight, one at Somer's home on Horton Street in Orange Park. The other is from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church - Orange Park, 1140 Kingsley Ave.

Clay County, Fla., Sheriff Rick Beseler first said the body was a female, but then corrected himself and said he couldn't yet confirm the gender. The parents of Somer Thompson, who has been missing since Monday, have been notified.

The body was found by Clay County detectives who followed garbage trucks from the girl's neighborhood to Folkston, Ga., just north of the Florida state line.

Beseler said investigators searched through 100 tons of garbage before finding the partially covered body. He did not give any other details about the discovery.

Carrington, I had not thought of that. The autopsy is being done in Ga. and the crime/recovery scene is in Ga., but Somer was certainly murdered in Florida. I do wonder how and if the Sunshine Law will come into play.

I think this falls back to when Ted Bundy was captured...

Whoever has the body of the Perp...has jurisdiction (sp?)

Are there any RSO's on McIntosh Street that we know of? My computer/internet connection is not performing very well right now.

I like what Lisa from Arizona just said on JVN! It really is time to unite and do something about it as a nation! Declare war!

I liked what she said too. BUT.......it was time to do something a long damn time ago.

ETA: I really wanted to watch JVM for news, but she's giving me a headache. So thanks to everyone posting updates.

Maybe it could depend if the ME can pinpoint a time of death, thus would prove that she was murdered in Florida?

Time since death: .Change observed
1-2 hours: .........Early signs of lividity.
2-5 hours: .........Clear signs of lividity throughout body.
5-7 hours: .........Rigor mortis begins in face.
8-12 hours: .......Rigor mortis established throughout the body, extending to arms and legs
12 hours: ..........Body has cooled to about 250C internally.
20-24 hours: .....Body has cooled to surrounding temperature.
24 hours: ..........Rigor mortis begins to disappear from the body in roughly the same order as it appeared.
36 hours: ..........Rigor mortis has completely disappeared.
48 hours: ..........Body discolouration shows that decomposition is beginning.

STOP IT, please just stop it! This child's death is bad enough for everyone, her family, friends, classmates, searchers....we do not need to add to it by pointing fingers at those who LE has not even hinted had anything to do with this.

This is not directed at anyone in particular but I am so sad at how the focus turned to doing back ground cks & facebook postings when instead we should have been focused only on this child. This case is NOT anything similar to KC or Haleigh....not even close as far we know now.

I want you to step back & think, really think about something. I am normally home when the children in my neighborhood get off the bus. Two wks ago my neighbor boys came & rang my door bell asking to use my phone. They were unable to get into their house as they had forgotten the key that morning. Of course I let them come in and use my phone, I know these kids, their mom, dad etc. They called mom who then gave them the code to the garage door. I then spoke to the mother who said she had not given the kids the code before b/c she didnt want someone to see them coming in that way daily as it can be seen from the street & they key they use goes to a back door. Now, what would have happened if those kids had gone home, put in the code, went inside & there was some bad people inside who then killed the kids or took the kids. Okay, who is the last person to SEE them, ME!!!! Would then everyone in a website be running background cks on me? Would they be putting my facebook or myspace page up to the public, remarking on every comment or pictures? Instead of seeing ME as a neighbor who is blessed enough not to have to work, would it be said " why is this woman home, she should be working, most people work, she knows those kids are home & the parents aren't. What do u think she did?" Do you see how unfair that is??? This was not a case where a mother waited 31 days to report nor is it a case where the story changed. To be honest, I am pretty over protective of my kids & now my grand kids BUT if they got home without the other, I probably would say "run outside & see if you see her." We dont know these kids searched for an hour. This person had no reason to think, at that very moment, anything was wrong. Kids are kids, they stop & play in leaves or look at a pretty rock, they do not think like we do nor do they know the dangers.

The pain this family, this community is going thru is horrible. We didnt need to add to that by running back ground cks on those who we had no reason to believe were involved. IF we continue to do this, NO ONE is going to get involved to help each other out. IF I thought for one minute all my personal info would end up on the net, I sure wouldnt let the kids use my phone the next time & ensure they got home safe!

I agree with you on some points. Innocent parties are innocent until legally proven otherwise.

That said, Sex offenders and those convicted of a crime are fair game. Their information is out there on the net already, as well it should be. They messed up, got caught, and we as the public have the right and responsibility to arm ourselves with that knowledge.
As for the neighbors and boyfriend, we can't sleuth what we can't find. Most of what we find is in the public domain, i.e. Internet. In fact, for us to share information, it has to be in the public domain. If a person doesn't want to be seen, stay hidden. Putting information about yourself in the public domain is to declare open season on yourself.

The BF was home when Somer ran off. The other children went home. I see no opportunity for him to have done this. IMO plain and simple...a child predator lurking just when school had let out. There are numerous cases, too many to site of children far older than Somer being abducted on the way home from school.

I don't remember seeing this posted, but if it already has been..sorry :(

Crossing Guard Didn't See Somer on Monday

One of three crossing guards Somer Thompson should have passed on her walk home from school Monday afternoon didn't see the young girl walk by the day she disappeared.

The Orange Park police officer who oversees the crossing guards says the first two, who were closest to the school, aren't sure if they saw Somer.

The first crossing station is just steps away from Grove Park Elementary, at Miller Street and West Gano Avenue. The second is about a half-mile down West Gano. At the third stop, another 2/10-mile down Gano, the crossing guard "is confident she didn't see Somer."

None of the crossing guards would talk on camera. We tracked Somer's routine walk home from school and it's exactly one mile.

"Coming and going from school, usually there are larger groups of children that are walking together. [They should] keep their eyes open, stay away from cars, stay away from anybody you don't know," Clay County superintendent Ben Wortham says.

It's been a short enough time that it might be possible to nail down time of death, but not to an exact hour. It's been too long for that. And the body was still found in GA, they would still have jurisdiction over the death investigation. And remember, she was running right before she was last seen, and physical exertion changes ATP levels, which changes the rigor pattern and duration. And if she was put through a compacter, there are going to be postmortem bruises, possibly overlaying or obscuring the lividity pattern. The best we'll get is an estimate, but they may be able to nail it down to within an 8-10 hour span.

The sad thing about pepdophiles is that many of them have never been caught, so never prosecuted and likewise never registered. In my family there was a spouse of a sibling with whom I could not be in the same room with as a child. When all of the other adults were in the kitchen eating dinner, gathering for conversation, etc., this inlaw of mine was busy trying to touch me. He was always on the lookout for some adult entering the room, but he tried to get away with things when he could. I always ended up going up to my room to read(no tv in my room - we were a one tv family). Many who knew him spoke of his "getting funny" with children, including an incident with a child of his own. That incident definitely came to the attention of authorities as the child had to be treated at a hospital ( too disgusting to talk about). He was ordered into counseling, but no charges were ever filed. That was about 40 or 41 years ago when attitudes were diffierent and LE was reluctant to press charges against a family member.

Having said that, I agree with the WS poster who said that a live-in BF is still not really family. It is definitely prudent for LE to rule him out. What if Somer had managed to get home before the other children -maybe they stopped, or dallied, whatever. Like my inlaw, the BF could have taken advantage of those few minutes alone with her. Then he sent them out to look for her to give him time to take care of evidence, including poor Somer's body. Is this plausible- maybe. Also, who measured the "hour" that the other children were looking for her? Unless someone specifically looked at the clock it is hard to estimate time correctly. What was thought to be an hour could have been an hour and 30, 40, 50 ,minutes or more. IMO there was time for something to have happened if Somer did make it to the house before the others did, and I am sure that LE is going to investigate every possibility, including that scenario. I pray that was not the case, but stranger things have happened. Sorry for post length. RIP Somer Thompson.

Sorry, I don't know why that last post I made posted twice. sorry everyone!

have been following this case since this am if it turns out to be her rip you are with all the other missing angels who were taken from this life to soon. prayers also to the family
