The Social Defense Secretariat in the northeastern state of Pernambuco said on Sunday that forensic physicians from the Legal Medicine Institute, or IML, in Recife had identified 11 of the 49 bodies that are currently being examined in the municipal amphitheater.

Another body recovered from the Atlantic should arrive in Recife on Sunday on a navy corvette that is also transporting pieces of the aircraft that went down in stormy weather near Brazilian and Senegalese ocean territory with 228 people on board.

Search teams from several countries are still scanning the search area.

Investigators are reviewing the bodies and debris at a base set up in the northern Brazilian city of Recife.

Both officials remained very cautious when asked how the probe into the causes of the disaster was going.
Air France’s Gourgeon echoed French investigators who said this week they were getting closer to understanding what happened but had no certainties yet.
They said they did not know yet whether unreliable speed readings from the plane’s sensors had contributed to the crash.
Gourgeon said he had not lost hope that the aircraft’s flight data recorders or “black boxes’’ would be found .

Twelve people were treated for bruises and neck and back pain after the plane landed at about 7:30 am (2330 GMT Sunday) in Perth, AAP news agency said.

The incident comes just 11 days after a cockpit blaze forced a Jetstar A330 to make an emergency landing, and also follows the Air France tragedy when 228 died in a mysterious accident involving the same model of plane.

Air France officials have contacted around 1,800 relatives of crash victims, which is proving to be challenging for them as they contact information for each passenger was not immediately available.

The bodies of the passengers were recovered six days after the incident, around 400 miles northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.

Pierre Jean Vandoorne, ambassador to the families of the victims of flight AF 447, which disappeared in flight on June 1, visited Brazil from June 13 to 16.

He went firstly to Rio de Janeiro where he met with the families of the victims gathered at the reception center set up by Air France; he also met the teams of volunteers from the airline tasked with helping the families.

Its withdrawal indicates that the Brazilian Air Force, which is coordinating the search and recovery operation for the crashed Airbus, does not believe that any more debris concentrations remain to be discovered.

This does not mean the air operation is over. Other aircraft continue to make daylight flights to track the already discovered wreckage and guide Brazilian and French warships so that they can recover as much debris as possible.

On Friday, June 19, only debris – no bodies – was recovered from the sea, while on Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21 neither debris nor bodies were recovered.
However, there are still concentrations of possible debris to be investigated by the ships committed to the recovery operation.

The tragedy of a commercial airliner going down in the Atlantic Ocean is already terrible, but some prankster took advantage of the situation and fooled a couple European news outlets with plane crash photos that were actually scenes from the ABC series "Lost."

It will be nothing short of a miracle if the flight recorder is recovered. Heck, it's a miracle they received the signal after all this time. I hope and pray it's recovered so that questions about this mysterious crash can be answered.

As the search continues for bodies and wreckage from the Air France crash there is confusion over whether the black boxes have been located.

A French news website says signals from the flight information recorders have been detected and that a mini-submarine was trying to pinpoint the location.

Official: No black box signals from Flight 447
46 minutes ago

PARIS (AP) — French military ships searching for the black boxes of Flight 447 have detected sounds in the Atlantic depths but they are not from the Air France plane's flight recorders, French officials said Tuesday.

The official and French investigators denied a report on the Web site of the French newspaper Le Monde that French ships had picked up a signal from the black boxes.

Investigators holding out faint hope that key information from a downed plane would be recovered had those expectations dashed on Tuesday.

Signals heard in the Atlantic Ocean were not coming from the black boxes of Air France Flight 447.

The aide confirmed that French military ships searching in the area where the plane crashed have "heard sounds" but that those were not signals from the flight's voice or data recorders

"In the context of the sea searches that are under way, work is undertaken on a regular basis that is aimed at eliminating any doubts related to any sounds that may be heard, and any findings will be made public," it said.

It appears that the search for the black boxes from doomed Air France Flight 447 may never be found. French military ships have detected sounds, but they are not from the flight recorders.

As the search continues for the black boxes and more bodies of Air France flight AF 447, which went down in the Atlantic on June 1, readers have been advised that an email containing photos of "the plane's final moments" is a hoax.

The press release by Interpol released the nationality of the foreigner as British.

The Brazilian authorities have scaled down the search for more bodies. One of the aircrafts with powerful radar used in the search mission until now has been called back. The authorities do not expect further bodies to be retrieved.

INTERPOL, the world's largest police organisation, is working jointly with the Brazilian authorities in identifying the 50 bodies that were recovered from the crash site in Atlantic Ocean.

The joint effort has led to the identification of 11 victims so far. The nationalities of the victims were announced as 10 Brazilians and one British. Among the 10 Brazilians, two are dual nationals of Germany and Swiss.

The latest leaks from the airline and its pilots indicate that Air France and Airbus were aware earlier than they have publicly admitted about serious problems with the speed instruments on the long-range A330 and A340 aircraft. Faulty speed readings were reported automatically by the Air France plane at the start of a series of failures that ended with the plane breaking up at night over the Atlantic with 228 aboard early on June1 .

Search crews have recovered the bodies of the flight captain and a steward from the Air France flight that crashed off the coast of Brazil.

A Brazilian diver floats on wreckage of Flight 447 earlier this month. The search for more debris continues.
The two flight members are among the victims that have been identified, Air France said in a statement Thursday.

Four hundred pieces of debris have also been recovered and are undergoing tests.

No cause has been officially announced, although the BEA has announced that it will be publishing a report on the accident before the end of the month.

The discovery of Mr Dubois’ body was seen as a possible confirmation that, in keeping with standard practice, he was resting during the cruise phase of the flight.

The first and second officers would have been at the controls. It is thought that seat-belted pilots were unlikely to have been thrown clear of the tightly enclosed flight deck.

The normal crew rest area on an A330 is in the cargo compartment, and a portion of it was one of the first items found.
I recall that the seats in that piece were in the 'stored' position.

I know nothing about the crew routine on these flights. Does the position of those seats provide any clues or insight in light of this info about the pilot?

Last night the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that within the last five weeks two Airbus A330 airliners have had critical episodes involving speed sensors--the same kind of emergency that is at the heart of the investigation into the loss of Air France Flight 447

A Northwest Airlines flight is among two that the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating for possible air-speed and altitude sensor malfunctions — errors that may have also occurred on the Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1.

The federal agency said Thursday that it is investigating an incident on a Northwest Airbus A-330 flying between Hong Kong and Tokyo on Tuesday. The aircraft landed safely in Tokyo.

In a possibly similar incident, a TAM Airlines flight between Miami and Sao Paulo, Brazil, experienced a loss of primary speed and altitude information while in cruise flight. The flight crew used backup instruments and primary data was restored in about 5 minutes, a NTSB news release said.

These black boxes in aircrafts include the flight data recorder and cockpit recorder. If found, the tapes may provide more answers to what caused the crash. However, the batteries may only last 30 days. It’s been 25 days.

The French Office of Accident Investigation and Analysis (BEA), which is leading an investigation, plans to issue a preliminary report on its findings near the end of June or early July.

Initial reports indicate that the flight crew noted an abrupt drop in the outside air temperature reading, followed by disconnections of the autopilot and autothrust, along with the loss of speed and altitude information, the board said.

The flight crew used backup instruments, and airspeed and altitude data was restored in about five minutes, according to the board.

Information about the Northwest flight is sketchier, but NTSB investigators are collecting data recorder information, automated messages, crew statements and weather data.

SAO PAULO (AP) — The search for the black boxes of the Air France jet that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean will likely continue for at least another 16 days, even though their audio beacons are likely fading away, an American officer said Friday.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2009/0626/p02s18-usgn.html

French investigators are expected to continue the search for Air France Flight 447's flight data recorders even after their 'pinger' signals fade in the next few days, perhaps with the aid of advanced sonar scans.

A Louisiana-based undersea mapping company, C & C Technologies, confirmed that it has been contacted by the Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses (BEA), the French investigation agency, regarding a "phase two" of the search effort.

The Brazilian military said late Friday it is calling off the search for bodies of passengers and crew from the Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic earlier this month.

Wreckage from Flight 447 spotted by search teams in the Atlantic last week.
It was unlikely that any more bodies would be found, the military said.

So far, search teams have found 51 of the 228 people who died when Air France Flight 447 plunged into the sea June 1, according to the military

"It has been nine days since we have located bodies," stressed Munhoz, which led Brazil to conclude that "it is impossible to recover more dead bodies or remains in the search area."

Although everyone was hoping for bodies and more info, it was inevitable that the search would be halted. Anyone remember when John Kennedy Jr's plane was lost? It, too, was supposedly like finding a needle in a haystack, yet the US military found it.

I've actually wondered how much involvement the US has been allowed here.

http://dailycontributor.com/air-france-447-may-have-crashed-due-to-computer-error/5822/

Experts are now suggesting that, while there is no definitive proof as of yet, the most probable cause of Air France Flight 447’s downfall could have been massive system-wide computer failure.

Modern aircraft systems are now mostly run on automatic computer commands, with minimal human intervention. Newer generation pilots are trained from this at the get-go, so unlike pilots from past decades, they may be more hesitant to actually swim into the controls should an aircraft’s computer systems malfunction, reports the Wall Street Journal

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/20090629/air-france-447-body-search-called-off-black-box-hunt-intensifies.htm

The search was called off on Friday after nine days of search by 12 planes and 11 ships producing no sightings of the remaining passenger bodies of the doomed flight 447.

...

However, the search for the black boxes will continue extending well over the expected 30 day duration when the black box will stop emitting locator signals. The black box recovery search is coordinated by the French authorities.
