Several Brazilian military ships, a French submarine, and two Dutch ships are currently searching the ocean bottom off Brazil for wreckage from Air France Flight 447, which plunged into the ocean on June 1st.

With the latest disaster, analysts have started questioning the safety record of the Airbus 330 and its computerised flight controls.

Search teams have recovered more than 400 pieces of debris from Air France Flight 447 but investigators still do not know why the plane crashed into the Atlantic, the French accident chief said Wednesday.

Paul-Louis Arslanian, head of the French air accident investigation agency BEA, expressed "a little more optimism" about the investigation as the discovery of so much debris has narrowed the vast search zone off the northeast coast of Brazil.

But Arslanian refused to give details on leads being followed up by his 60-member team of investigators, lashing out at press "speculation" including suggestions that defective speed probes could have played a role in the disaster.

"For now, we cannot say, and no one can say what happened. It is much too soon to go imagining scenarios in one direction or another," he insisted.

France's chief air disaster investigator said on Wednesday he was unhappy that a French pathologist had not been allowed to take part in autopsies in Brazil of bodies recovered after an Air France plane crash.

The automated messages were not alarm calls and no distress call was picked up from the plane, he said.

Brazilian officials on Wednesday denied that French investigators were being barred from examining bodies recovered from an Air France jet that plunged into the Atlantic, as the search for answers to the disaster continued.

"We have four French investigators accredited to participate in the examinations" of the bodies being carried out in the northeastern city of Recife, a Brazilian police spokesman told AFP.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil official to AP: Air France crash victims show multiple fractures of legs, hips and arms.

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/20090617/air-france-447-recovery-all-bodies-unlikely.htm

The French and Brazilian search and recovery team have recovered 50 bodies until now from the ill fated Air France flight 447 that went down in Atlantic Ocean on its way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. There are fears that the many of the remaining bodies of the passengers may never be recovered and could be lost in the vast and turbulent Atlantic Ocean.

The hunt for the passenger's bodies is underway for well over two weeks and only 50 bodies have been recovered.

I bet I'm going to have nightmares about this tonight, and I can only imagine what the bereaved families will feel. This seems a little graphic for the investigating team to release with the cause still unknown, IMO.
I hope those who perished never knew anything, but I fear they did know they were in dire distress.
This is the saddest post I've read since the initial crash confirmation. It's so horrible. To fall through the air with a violence that stripped clothing off. OMG. To have a loved one's body floating in the Atlantic, nude.. it makes me retch.

Thanks Paintr. You are a diligent poster on this tragedy. Sorry for the earlier misunderstanding. :)
Peace,
Maria
This reminds me so much of TWA 800. God bless them all. :rose:

With 11 Days to Find Black Boxes, The Latest on the Search and the EvidenceAir France flight 447 crashed en route to Paris after leaving Rio de Janeiro on May 31. Nineteen days later, here's the very latest on the search for clues about the accident.

http://www.amsterdamnews.net/story/509654

The French accident investigation board has told relatives of the victims of the plane crash that its team is working quickly to find out what happened in order to make aviation safer.

On an Airbus, the final say in extreme circumstances is usually left to the onboard systems, not the pilot. If the systems on Flight 447 received conflicting information on the aircraft's airspeed, it is unclear how they would have reacted or whether they or the pilots would have been left in control.

Brazilian authorities say autopsies have revealed fractures in the legs, hips and arms of Air France disaster victims.

Experts said yesterday the injuries, coupled with the large pieces of wreckage pulled from the Atlantic, strongly suggested the plane broke up in the air.

I just hope and pray these people died quickly and suffered as little as possible. The "what ifs" scare me to death. It's all so sad.

Nonetheless, even the best informed speculation is just that: speculation. The sonar pingers on the black box have only another two weeks of life left in them. A French nuclear submarine and American sonar searching gear have been deployed in the area of the South Atlantic where the remnants of the airplane are assumed to be, but it's a huge area to cover in such a short time and many experts doubt that the black box can be found before the pingers give out. That doesn't mean that the search stops at that point. It just becomes even harder.

He revealed that three deep-sea slavage ships, plus remotely operated vehicles, and submarines, were on stand-by to deploy once the beacons were detected or the wreckage found.

He also reported that the operation involves five countries – France, Brazil, the US, the Netherlands, and the UK. The US has lent specialist equipment to France for the seabed search, while investigators from the UK Air Accident Investigation Branch are with their French colleagues on board the search ships, as are specialists from Airbus and Air France.

Regarding the search for debris and bodies on the sea surface, Arslanian assured that the human remains were being treated with care.

Brazil's military said Saturday it was taking a specialized aircraft with on-board radar out of the search for more remains from the Air France plane disaster in the Atlantic.

The air force Embraer R-99 was being removed from the operation after nearly three weeks of flying over the zone, 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) off Brazil's coast, the military said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a French nuclear submarine is still searching for the two black boxes from the flight.

The batteries which power the underwater beacons which would allow the sub to locate the boxes are expected to expire within the week.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- It is an area of extreme turbulence, frequently producing some of the largest and most powerful thunderstorms on Earth. Yet each day, scores of flights forge through it.

This is the intertropical convergence zone, a band of swirling air masses that circles the globe over or near the equator. Roughly 100 miles wide, the zone is suspected of busting apart Air France Flight 447 while it was over the Atlantic Ocean on May 31, killing all 228 on board.

AF447-The traces disappear

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/AF-crash-families-to-get--24-500-as-1st-compensation/479438

Air France will pay families about USD 24,500 in initial compensation for each victim of the crash of Flight 447 this month even as investigators are yet to solve the mystery of what brought the jet down.
The amount may not seem like much but often times it's immediately after a tragedy that families need money the most, especially if the lost one is the breadwinner of the family. It's good that AF is doing this right away.

Again, thanks so much Paintr for the daily updates!

In Brazil, experts have identified the first bodies of victims in the Air France disaster over the Atlantic Ocean.

The identified people are five men and five women from Brazil and one foreign national whose country of origin has not been identified.

Dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples were used to identify the bodies, the statement said. Investigators are reviewing all remains, debris and baggage at a base set up in Recife, capital of Pernambuco.
