I don't think they're draconian measures. If the media could be trusted to use discretion in matters of personal safety then such measures wouldn't have to be taken...but they can't.

Just to be clear Clio, this isn't directed at you, but rather the evening Standard guy.

Regarding the MIL And the reason for the trip, I can imagine that having a son with serious mental health issues living with you would be incredibly stressful. Perhaps the al Hilli family decided she needed a break for her own health and they decided to get away from the city as a family.

I can understand MIL wanting a break in UK, away from her son, but am curious if she took him with her.

Interesting article. Pointing finger at the Mossad. Do not find it very believable though. Millions of people are anti Israel , not only Arabs or Muslims and whoop it up in chatrooms. A cousin of Mr Al-Hilli, who was contacted in Baghdad but refused to be identified, said: ‘If you investigate and find out about Saad’s job, you will know who’s behind his killing.’

The cousin, who lives in Istanbul but was on a business trip to Baghdad, added: ‘We have been told by the police not to say anything more.’

It is believed that French police are examining Iraqi-born Mr Al-Hilli’s work with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL).


Intelligence sources said the company had ‘been of interest’ to MI5 for ten years during which time the security service had conducted surveillance operations on British-based individuals who had made contact with SSTL.

If the killer followed them from UK , why wait that long till they reached Lake Annecy. You would think that there were plenty of other opportunities along the way. Besides Lake Annecy had been visited by the family before and was a known destination. Sounds more like a wait till they arrive game or there was a planned rendez-vous.
Hopefully the 7 year old can also shed some light as to why they were sitting at the lay-by(alive I assume) for about an hour apparently.
Funny that no other witnesses, either up or down , passed them by during that hour.
And suddenly it changes into Grand Central when three parties of a total of 5 people all arrive with in 10 minutes or so.:waitasec:

I saw an interview of a British couple, and the wife said that they had been on that same road about a few hours, maybe an hour, before the shootings.

The car was covered when taken out of the forest, hope no fingerprints were destroyed.

Darn, that is no 4. We went from a Walther ,to a Skorpion(sub machine), to a CZ 50 and now to a collector gun. This story has had as many versions as Carter has liver pills.

I find that whole story from the friend hard to believe anyway. Mr Al-Hilli was trying to get a job at CERN, and appeared to be a fairly intelligent fellow IMO. Public ranting like that gets you noticed by intelligence gatherers and would block the way to many jobs with even a modicum of security..

He was into CAD/CAM and I suspect worked from home too for his own company. That would require some fancy computers/software.

I was surprised at the time that the police allowed the press to go to the crime scene so soon after the incident.

There's a video half way down this article with a picture of what might be a bullet casing but Jon Sopal doesn't refer to it in his narrative. He says there are just shards of broken glass lying around.

That same Mirror story had also this in it

" In a Skype message to Gary in October 2009, Saad told how he was looking forward to visiting Iraq to try to secure a £800,000 property deal, adding fondly: “Iraq is still warm"

Now that is about 1.3 million $$. Where was he getting those bucks if story is true.
