Attaque de Strasbourg : qui sont les victimes ?

The deadly victims

- A 45-year-old garage owner from Strasbourg of Afghan origin, Kamal Naghchband, died on Thursday. Married and father of three young children, "he went to see the Christmas market, and in front of his children he took a bullet" in the head, his cousin said. The Great Eyyüb Sultan Mosque, of which this Muslim man of Afghan origin was a believer, reported on Twitter that "his family present with him at the time of the events is safe and sound".

- A 45-year-old Thai tourist, Anupong Suebsamarn, was killed by a bullet to the head, according to the Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace. He was on holiday in Strasbourg with his wife, unharmed. His death has been confirmed by the Thai authorities.

- A 61-year-old father from Strasbourg, Pascal Verdenne, also passed away on Tuesday evening, according to Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace. He was targeted by the assailant as he was leaving a restaurant, waiting for his wife and son still inside.

Kamal Naghchband was a refugee from Afghanistan, he had been living in France for 18 years and had the French nationality. Other sources say someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and the terrorist shot him in the face, he fell down with his young son in his arms.

The Thai tourists had decided not to go to Paris because they deemed it too dangerous, they went to Strasbourg instead. (...)

The fourth person who has been reported brain dead, is possibly the young Italian journalist. He was also shot in the head and the bullet is stuck in an impossible place, very difficult to operate.

This just breaks my heart :( What a tragedy.

I'm glad they shot this lunatic dead.

Very glad they killed him. Save the taxpayers some money...

I sympathize with the taxpayers around the globe, after all I'm one of them. Also I am relieved that the legal system won't get a chance to get him back on the street again or start a family while in prison. There is a strong legal movement in Europe to abolish life in prison, their idea is that even the most horrible murderers and other criminals should be offered perspective ~ of freedom that is, else the punishment is cruel. They said the same about the death penalty and IMHO they will never stop. Victims are of no concern to this type of lawyer or judge.

Don't get me started.

On a lighter note, when the news broke, BFMTV put on the song by Bob Marley I shot the Cheriff. ;) It was said that people in the street where it happened streamed the music on their phones for the police.
On social media, many were angry about this, and that was even funnier.

Antonio Megalizzi, the Italian journalist who was injured in the attack on Tuesday in the centre of Strasbourg, France, has died. He was 28 years old, and in addition to studying at the School of International Studies in Trento he collaborated with several newspapers in Trentino. He was in Strasbourg to follow the plenary of the European Parliament as part of the Europhonica project, a European network of university radios. His death was confirmed by the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani.

Megalizzi was hit while walking in the city centre with two colleagues, shortly after leaving the European Parliament. At first the Italian newspapers had spread the news explaining that he had been injured in a minor way. Only later did the news spread that he had been hit in the head and that his condition was very serious.

I do not think that governments take the
necessary measures to prevent this.

DOCUMENT FRANCE 2: "I would have reported him to the police": the parents of Cherif Chekatt, the alleged perpetrator of the attack in Strasbourg, have told us

France 2 collected testimonies from the father and mother of the main suspect in the attack in the Alsatian capital, after their detention.

They are speaking for the very first time. The father and mother of Cherif Chekatt, the alleged perpetrator of the attack in Strasbourg that killed four people, agreed to confide in France 2 on Saturday, December 15, when they left police custody. Rouadja Rouag, the mother of the alleged terrorist, confesses that she was "shocked", not only for herself but "for everyone", when she understood that her son was the alleged perpetrator of the attack.

Abdelkrim Chekatt, Cherif Chekatt's father, explains that he presented himself to the police on Tuesday after the attack to offer his help to the police so that they could arrest his son. "I wasn't sure he was my son. I had doubts about his guilt," he confides. Abdelkrim Chekatt said he wanted to try to "reason" with his son, who was finally shot dead by a patrol after 48 hours of tracking. "I would have persuaded him to surrender."

"I saw him three days earlier," says Cherif Chekatt's father. That was the last time he spoke to his son. And he had no idea what he was planning, he said. "I would have reported him to the police," says the father. "That way, he doesn't kill anyone and he doesn't get killed." Abdelkrim Chekatt says he tried to reach his son on the run, but he did not answer. " He was on voicemail."

Abdelkrim Chekatt admits that his son adhered to the theses of the terrorist organisation Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attack in Strasbourg. But he asserts that he disagreed with him on this point. "I always told him: they are criminals," he said, denouncing the "atrocities" perpetrated by jihadists. Cherif Chekatt's father and mother would like to offer their condolences to the families of the victims of the Strasbourg bombing.

From the interview:

Cherif Chekatt's parents, who have been divorced for several years, say they do not share their son's ideas and offer their condolences to the victims' families. The father has a record fiché S for religious fundamentalism.

Strasbourg attack: Cherif Chekatt's older brother arrested in Algeria

Sami Chekatt, 34, one of the brothers of the alleged Christmas market murderer was arrested in Algeria on a search warrant for a terrorist criminal association.

An older brother of Cherif Chekatt, the alleged murderer of the Strasbourg Christmas market, was arrested in Algeria. Sami Chekatt, aged 34, fiché S and considered dangerous, was under a search warrant for a terrorist criminal association launched after the attack.

The man had left France long before the attack on the Christmas market. The investigators want to know if he was aware of his brother's terrorist project and if he could have participated in it by providing possible logistical support.

In the hours following the attack on the Christmas market, the parents of the alleged killer and two of his brothers, Malek and Elias, were taken into custody. They were still being heard during night by the Strasbourg PJ and the Counter-Terrorism Branch. On Wednesday, a fifth person was arrested and taken into custody: a friend of Chekatt's who was suspected of harbouring the terrorist the day before he committed the act.

Strasbourg attack: a fifth person dies as a result of his injuries

The Bas-Rhin prefecture announced on Sunday the death of a fifth victim of Chérif Chekatt, the author of the attack perpetrated on the evening of 11 December in Strasbourg.

The Paris Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed Sunday evening the death of this Polish victim, who had been residing in Strasbourg for twenty years.

"My brother Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski has left us. He thanks you for your love and for the strength you have given him," the brother of the 36-year-old Strasburger from Katowice, Poland, wrote on Facebook.

Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski, his Italian friend Antonio Megalizzi, who died on Friday from his injuries, and other friends were outside the bar "Les Savons d'Hélène". According to relatives, the two men tried to prevent Chérif Chekatt from entering the bar by interfering.

Nicknamed "Bartek", the thirty-year-old dreamed of "opening a language inn in Strasbourg", a close friend of this passionate person for languages and other cultures told AFP on Sunday. In particular, he was responsible for the activities of the European Strasbulles Comic Strip Festival.

The Strasbourg attack killed five people and injured eleven. Chérif Chekatt was shot dead on Thursday by police after a manhunt of two days.

This is all so sad and senseless, what can people do to protect themselves, do we have to invest in items like this?
The Differences Between A Stab & Bullet Proof Vest
"If a vest features stab protection, it will not necessarily be bullet proof. Equally, a bullet proof vest may offer no protection to bladed weapons. Also, a vest which is bullet and edged blade resistant may offer no protection to spike threats (i.e. screwdrivers, knitting needles, syringes etc.)

Given these facts, you must carefully consider the threats in your environment, and decide which protection levels are most suitable for your needs. Only then can you know which level of ballistic and/or stab and/or spike protection you should select.

If your area is prone to gun crime, you may wish to purchase ballistic protection. However, if guns are an unlikely threat, knife or spike protection may be more suitable."

Strasbourg attack: one man under investigation and two new persons in police custody

The thirty-something man [ under arrest ] is a close relative of Cherif Chekatt, the perpetrator of the attack killed by police on Thursday, December 13, after a manhunt of two days. He is suspected of having played a key role in supplying the atypical weapon used by the terrorist in the streets of Strasbourg. In this case, an old revolver from the late 19th century was found near the terrorist's body.

The way Cherif Chekatt was able to obtain it is one of the main areas of investigation. This handgun was used by French officers during the First World War. But even if it is an old barrel revolver whose manoeuvrability intrigues the experts, it is not a weapon that can easily be found in amateur markets where many old weapons can be bought freely under certain conditions.

The 29-year-old terrorist also did not sleep at the home he was thought to be at the day before the attack. He was absent when the gendarmes came to arrest him on 11 December at dawn, at the same time as his alleged accomplices, in a case of attempted homicide on the basis of extortion. Did Cherif Chekatt have this weapon on him the day before the attack? Or, caught in a kind of murderous decompensation, did he get it back shortly before he acted, and in this case, from whom?

Two other people were taken into police custody on Monday 17 December as part of these investigations. They too are suspected of having had a role in supplying this old revolver with which, with the help of a knife, Cherif Chekatt killed five people and wounded eleven others, several of them seriously.

More about the man under arrest:

Strasbourg attack: Audrey Mondjehi, who took in Cherif Chekatt,is an offender and a figure on the Strasbourg rap scene

During his detention, he reportedly told the police that Cherif Chekatt had told him that he would be on "BFM-TV's front page that same evening." The man who provided accommodation, presented as a relative of the killer, has a long criminal record. He is also a figure of the Strasbourg rap scene, under the name of 1pulsif. He was indicted on Monday evening.

Cherif Chekatt's 37-year-old relative, who lodged him at home in Lingolsheim (Tanneries Park) on the night of Monday 10 to Tuesday 11 December and who was taken into police custody on Thursday 13 December, also reportedly had accommodated him the previous nights. They were also reportedly together until early afternoon on the day of the attack.

It is also possible that he provided him with the gun used to carry out the attack. During his detention, he reportedly told the police that Cherif Chekatt had told him that he would be on "BFM-TV's front page that same evening". However, he reportedly assured that he was unaware of his friend's plans to attack.

This man, whom the Strasbourg killer knew in detention, has a long criminal record. In particular, he has been involved in settling scores with firearms.

Audrey Mondjehi is also known as a figure of the Strasbourg rap scene, under the name of 1pulsive. He was indicted on Monday evening and jailed for participation in a criminal terrorist criminal conspiracy.

Strasbourg: un demi-frère de Chérif Chekatt interpellé pour vol à main armé

A half-brother of Chérif Chekatt, the author of the attack committed a week ago in Strasbourg, was arrested on Monday in this eastern French city for "aggravated robbery at gunpoint," it was reported on Tuesday from confirmed sources.

He is suspected of having tried to steal a passer-by's wallet accompanied by two accomplices on Monday, a police source said, confirming information from BFMTV.

According to the news channel, Chérif Chekatt's 15-year-old half-brother and his two accomplices held up the passer-by with a handgun.

The events took place near a park in the Potteries district, where Chérif Chekatt lived.

The police custody of the three arrested was extended on Tuesday, another police source told AFP.

"Investigations are under way, under the authority of the Strasbourg Public Prosecutor's Office, to find out the real involvement of all concerned", it was pointed out. The investigation was entrusted to the Bas-Rhin departmental security.

The attack in Strasbourg killed five people and wounded about ten, five of whom were able to return home, said Tuesday the prefect of Bas-Rhin (east), Jean-Luc Marx.

Attentat de Strasbourg : Cherif Chekatt, le profil hybride du voyou radicalisé qui hante les services

Strasbourg attack: Cherif Chekatt, the hybrid profile of the radicalized street offender haunting the services

The 29-year-old perpetrator of the Strasbourg attack, a serial and radicalized offender, had been closely monitored by the DGSI for several months.

Half crook, half religious, devout but never spotted as having any desire for jihad, thief at his time... Forty-eight hours after the attack on Strasbourg, on the evening of 11 December, the career of Cherif Chekatt, alleged perpetrator of the Strasbourg attack, appears more and more symbolic of these repeat radical offenders, a hybrid profile that now particularly concerns the intelligence services in charge of the fight against terrorism.

On Thursday morning, December 13, this man with dark skin, short hair and a shaven beard was still being hunted down, with more than 720 members of the police on his tail, including 100 judicial police officers. His face was officially unveiled with a call for witnesses issued by the national police on 12 December. An image where a small mark was discreetly recognizable at the top of his forehead, a sign of an assiduous practice of prayers.

For Cherif Chekatt, the beginnings of this chaotic journey start in childhood. At 10 years old, he gets caught and falls into delinquency. As the Paris Public Prosecutor, Rémi Heitz, pointed out, Cherif Chekatt had already accumulated 67 criminal records, including 27 convictions in France, Germany and Switzerland, on the eve of his murderous drift in Strasbourg. A rap sheet mainly loaded with offences, robberies, or destruction that lead him to spend a series of time in prison.

Cherif Chekatt, born in Strasbourg, is a member of a family of six brothers and sisters, as well as six other half-brothers and half-sisters, a total of twelve children. A family with problems, with a core group of four brothers who are also repeat offenders.

"The Chekatts, you haven't defended them yet? Don't worry, it will come one day," the Strasbourg criminal lawyers have been joking for a long time.

The rest of the article is behnd a paywall, and you have to subscribe to read it. So I won't do that, but it is a pity. Because there is more info about the family. Some of it I read on SM, from reliable posters.

The father allegedly has two wives and 12 children and lives on benefits. Four children are criminals, several are heavily radicalized. The father also has a Fiche S for radicalisation. He was interviewed on TV about his son Chérif wearing a woollen cap with a picture of Che Guevara. The more cynical posters comment that he has raised his children in both the spirit of fundamentalist and Che Guevara radicalisation, and they act accordingly.

This is the man who explained on camera how he told his son that the Islamic State are criminals.

I am lost for words now.

ISIS vows UK carnage during Christmas season
"One expert fears that the death cult is deadly serious about unleashing Christmas carnage.

Rita Katz, director of the international terrorism study group Site Intel, said that Islamic State is spreading fear.
“[By] using Christmas symbols like Santa Claus and depicting streets in England, IS-aligned groups [are] warning of attacks,” she told The UK Sun.

The warning comes hot on the heels of the Christmas market massacre in the French city of Strasbourg. Five people died in the attack before the terrorist was killed by cops."
"As a result, security has been jacked up across Europe — particularly in Italy and France — as police have an armed presence in train stations and airports,."
