I have said before that one of the best ways to combat this is to make it widely known that if you do something like this then LE is going to come after your family and friends if they supported you in any minor way. Prosecute to the fullest extent of the law for any minor support provided that allowed the person to commit the act. Whether that is harboring or not letting LE know an attack is imminent or other ways so long as there is a legal way to do so.

I dont think countries do near enough in this regard. I think we have been way too lenient on some past terrorists which had logistical or harboring support from family members and friends. We need to hit the terrorists where it hurts.

State funeral for Italian journalist killed in Strasbourg attack

Antonio Megalizzi, the young Italian reporter fatally injured in the attack on a Strasbourg Christmas market, was brought home on Thursday for a state funeral, as flags across Italy were lowered to half-mast.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani joined Megalizzi's family, friends and colleagues at a ceremony in the 29-year-old's home town of Trento.

"Once more blind and absurd violence has cut off a young life, struck at the heart of a family forever, and stunned a community," said the archbishop of Trento, Lauro Tisi.

"Part of heaven came down to the earth and now it's returning to it," he said.

Info Marianne: a video of allegiance to Daech (ISIS) found on Chérif Chekatt's computer

According to our information, investigators recently discovered a video of allegiance to Daech (ISIS) on Chekatt's computer, dated November. Some voices are beginning to question a possible shortcoming in the surveillance of the Strasbourg killer.

As the investigation progresses, Chérif Chekatt appears to be less of a common law offender. According to a source close to the intelligence services, the investigators recently found on the computer of the perpetrator of the Strasbourg attack a video of allegiance to Daech (ISIS), dated November, one month before the killings. The man with 67 offences on his criminal record was indeed a radicalized jihadist....

First, the government services communicated on the absence of radicalization of Chérif Chekatt. The terrorist had "no proven link" with the Islamist movement in Strasbourg, a source close to the case told Marianne on 12 December. However, he had been on file fiché S since 2016, and had become more radicalized "about ten years ago" in prison. "It was only in this capacity that he was followed, in a rather serious way, by the intelligence services, but like many other individuals who may have demonstrated a radical religious practice in detention," according to Secretary of State Laurent Nunez on France Inter the day after the attack.

Also, within the State services, some voices are beginning to question a possible shortcoming in the surveillance of Chérif Chekatt, whose father and brother are also registered fiché S for fundamentalism. His father, Abdelkrim Chekatt, explained to France 2 that he knew that his son was defending Daech's theses: "Daech is fighting for a just cause according to him. I told him not to listen to what they say." After his death on 13 December, the terrorist organisation claimed responsibility for the Strasbourg attack.

These four men and one woman are between 30 and 78 years old, for the oldest, according to information from franceinfo. They were all arrested in the Bas-Rhin, particularly in the Selestat area, according to a police source in Franceinfo.

They were placed in police custody on the investigating judge's letter rogatory, as part of the judicial investigation opened following the attack in Strasbourg in December, a judicial source in franceinfo said. They are suspected of having participated in the supply of an 8 mm pistol to Cherif Chekatt.

Attentat à Strasbourg : trois personnes soupçonnées d'avoir aidé Cherif Chekatt à se procurer son arme ont été mises en examen

They were remanded in custody.

These people are suspected of having helped the perpetrator of the attack, Cherif Chekatt, to obtain the 8mm revolver with which he shot passers-by at the Christmas market on December 11. Un frère du terroriste Cherif Chekatt arrêté: la garde à vue prolongée ce samedi

A brother of terrorist Cherif Chekatt arrested: police custody extended this Saturday

The elder brother of Cherif Chekatt, the author of the December 11 massacre at the Christmas market, was arrested Friday afternoon in Strasbourg after posting messages on Facebook suggesting that he was planning to carry out an attack. His detention was extended this Saturday.

Calls to the 17 began to arrive at the Strasbourg police headquarters on Friday in the early afternoon. Several people contacted the police to report the content of disturbing messages they had seen circulating on social networks.

The police immediately took the matter very seriously. At about 1:30 p.m., a terrorist alert was activated in the town. "Suddenly, we were all plunged into the atmosphere of the Christmas market attack [that killed five people and injured eleven on 11 December 2018, editor's note]," according to a police officer from Strasbourg.

Troops were positioned around all places considered potentially sensitive to the risk of terrorism, including religious buildings. The Strasbourg Regional Directorate of the Judicial Police (DRPJ) is responsible for leading the operations.

"Everything is planned"

In one of the messages posted on his Facebook account, the 38-year-old suspect announces that he will be on "BFM's front page at 6:30 p. m. sharp (sic)." The reference is clearly similar to the statement that Cherif Chekatt allegedly made, only a few hours before taking action, to the man who had housed him. "Everything is planned. Veni vidi Vinci (sic)," writes the elder brother of the attacker of December 11.

In another post appearing on his account, Malek Chekatt says that "everything is ready. I ask my contacts (please) to remain silent until 6:30 p.m. tonight, please." The message is accompanied by a photograph of a sofa on which are placed two Kalashnikov assault rifles, a rifle and two pistols. There is also a bulletproof vest. The origin of this picture remains unclear.

In other messages published later, the man changed his tone and suggested that he should not be taken seriously. He even goes so far as to draw a parallel with April Fools.

At around 3:45 p.m., DRPJ police arrested him near his home in Strasbourg, in the stock exchange district. Malek Chekatt is being held in police custody on charges of "threatening to kill or damage property that is dangerous to persons". His apartment is being searched.

However, according to a police source, there is no tangible evidence to support the suspect's hypothesis of an attempt to carry out a terrorist act. The latter could have acted without realizing the consequences of his publications, in a context of psychological fragility linked to his brother's trajectory, who was shot dead by the police on 13 December 2018 in the Neudorf district where he had been hiding for two days.

Jihadi inmate who stabbed two prison guards with the help of his pregnant wife who was shot dead by police after conjugal visit was carrying out attack 'to avenge killing of Strasbourg Christmas Market terrorist'

The jihadi inmate who knifed two prison guards in France before watching his pregnant partner being gunned down in front of him was 'avenging' the killing of Strasbourg terrorist Cherif Chekatt, it emerged today.

Michael Chiolo, 27, and his partner Hanane Abouhana had locked themselves inside the 'family facility' of the Alencon-Conde-sur-Sarthe prison in Normandy, after he attacked two guards as they both shouted 'Alluhu Akbar' – Arabic for 'God is the Greatest'.

The couple launched a ten-hour standoff from inside the room, after which police moved in and shot and injured them both, fatally wounding 34-year-old Abouhana.

'(He) said he wanted to avenge Cherif Chekatt,' prosecutor Remy Heitz told reporters.

'He said he was wearing an explosive belt and threatened to use it.' The belt turned out to be fake.

Abouhana, from Mulhouse, in France's Haut-Rhin department, had reportedly also pledged to 'avenge' Chekatt before she was shot dead.

Despite being described by a judge as a 'psychopath' before being handed a 30-year-sentence in 2014 for murdering a Holocaust survivor, Chiolo had been granted regular family visits.

More about Michael Chiolo, yet another thief and murderer for whom islam offers the perfect escape and improved self-esteem:

Attaque de Condé-sur-Sarthe : ce que l'on sait de Michaël Chiolo, le détenu radicalisé qui a poignardé deux surveillants

Attack on Condé-sur-Sarthe: what we know about Michaël Chiolo, the radicalized prisoner who knifed two prison guards.

A radicalized detainee stabbed two supervisors Tuesday morning, causing them serious injuries. He was arrested by the Raid at the end of the day. Converted to Islam in 2010, this former marginal was sentenced to 30 years in prison for sequestration followed by death and was considered very dangerous by psychiatric experts.

Two seriously injured: this is the outcome of the attack on the ultra-secure prison of Alençon/Condé-sur-Sarthe on Tuesday, which was immediately taken over by the Paris anti-terrorist prosecutor's office. At the origin of this tragedy: Michaël Chiolo, a radicalized prisoner who was serving a 30-year sentence of criminal imprisonment, was finally arrested by the Raid at the end of the day. He was slightly injured. His partner, with whom he had taken refuge, died as a result of her injuries.

Michaël Chiolo, 27, a common-law prisoner, is considered "radicalized in prison", according to a police source. Monitored by prison intelligence and included in the Terrorist Prevention and Radicalization Index (FSPRT). However, he was not detained in the radicalized wing that was opened in September, according to FO.

Born in Moselle on July 11, 1991, Michaël Chiolo was an "intelligent, highly educated" boy, without any training or profession, who " became a bit of a vagrant " after having cut off ties with his family, according to his former lawyer, Me Pauline Brion,

According to the investigation, he has been desocialized since the age of 17 and fleeing his home when he was arrested in April 2012 for the murder of Roger Tall, a former resistance fighter whose safe-deposit box he was after.

With an accomplice, originally from Saint-Avold (Moselle), he was sentenced in December 2015 on appeal to Nancy for having suffocated this 89-year-old man, a former railwayman who had survived the Nazi camps. The latter had been kidnapped and "mummified" at his home near Metz in 2012.

According to the psychiatrist expert, Michaël Chiolo presents a "severe dissociative personality disorder", on which psychotherapies have "no effect". "Risk of major violent recurrence" and "great dangerousness", he notes.

Converted to Islam in 2010 under the name of Abdel-Karim, the detainee was serving a criminal sentence for arrest, kidnapping, forcible confinement followed by death and robbery with a weapon, and one year's imprisonment for public apology of terrorist acts. He was eligible for release in 2038.

In November 2015, while already incarcerated in Mulhouse awaiting his appeal judgment, Michaël Chiolo was sentenced to one year in prison for condoning terrorist acts. He had mimicked the attacks that killed 129 people in Paris and Saint-Denis by chanting "Bataclan" in the courtyard of the prison. About twenty detainees took part in this fateful game, but Michaël C. was considered as the leader, notably because of the influence he exerts on his fellow inmates according to the supervisors.

According to Me Pauline Brion, he met his partner "in prison and they were planning to get married". "He had written to someone after his conversion to find him a wife," she told AFP.
