Yeah I'd be suspicious, what kind of people are they hoping will come forward

Maybe just someone that heard the perps talking about it? Or through the grapevine

SOmeone may have been afraid to NOT go along, for fear of losing his head, no pun intended !

"The reward in a high-profile Putnam County homicide is every bit a plea for help, a call for answers, an incentive, and as the sheriff there not-so-delicately put it, for “some hoodlum to rat out another hoodlum

As the hunt for the killer of an elderly Lake Oconee couple entered its fifth week Tuesday, the mystery of who killed Shirley and Russell Dermond remains unsolved."

Would luv to see the Academy Group brought in on the Dermond investigation; an excellent investigative resource with decades of experience, IMO.

I can't believe he HAS to do it with this particular case!

I do honeybun1807.. As Sheriff Sills said; he is the only person that has been ruled out as a suspect in the Dermond murders, because he knows where he was... That leaves over 300,000,000 possible suspects nationwide..

The GBI has six crime labs around the state, but all services are performed at the lab at GBI Headquarters.

Sills said his investigators have worked entirely on the case for 26 days, assisted by the FBI and scores of detectives from other counties.

But no major leads have been reported.
If local LE and the FBI have worked this case for 26 days shouldn't they have some kind of lead?
What about fingerprints from the garage?
DNA from the house, garage?
Anything from the cameras ?

something?

I watched a Criminal Mind the other day ....... the lead detective who called in the CM team was the perp. It was interesting.

Well, we either have a $43 or 63, ooo reward on the table. Darn it. Wish I could solve this one...but I have no clue! Just thinking what I could do with that amount of money though. (sigh) To some, that's pennies, to others, that's like winning the lottery.

COPYCAT? IN COLORADO?

Killed by grandson AND girlfriend.

"The dismembered remains of a Colorado woman missing since her husband was discovered dead last week have been found, and the couple's teenage grandson and girlfriend have been arrested "
"Partial remains of Shirley Severance, 70, were found at a reservoir 18 miles (29 miles) southwest of the farming town, and a second set located across the state line in Lorenzo, Nebraska."

Foxfire, we do not know what the LE has in this case and if they feel the need to up the reward related to the case to get more information maybe we could focus on that versus calling him an antique. He clearly is running the investigation and working with the fbi and if ircc the gbi is doing did the posts. Don't rely on the media to know where LE is in a case. The Sheriff has his personality and he won't lose that. If you like it fine. If you don't fine. But really this seems to be a joint task force focused on solving this case. We may not hear who is involved or what they are doing but they are working. We have to wait and be patient.:twocents:

What if the only prints and DNA are from family members and a friend or two?

That would explain the sheriff's comment he's the only one cleared.
I think there are many alibis to check financial statements to look at.
I do not think a stranger did this and I think it's going to take a long time to arrest someone. Jmo

Interesting.

From one of your links.

Sometimes reward money is used to see if it will result in someone talking who hasn't been willing to talk before, with the hopes of gaining the money.

Sometimes it is used by families to attempt to gain information about their loved ones case they feel they would not have access to from the police if they don't--and to conduct their own investigation of sorts.

And sometimes it is used as a ruse by the murdered ones family or friends to throw suspicion away from themselves. But whatever the case, reward monies rarely tend to do for a unsolved homicide what the public thinks it will do: rat out a killer.

Good morning, Ocean. Found several articles concerning the effectiveness of rewards in investigations. With the advent of the internet, imo, large rewards seem to increase social media & ms media coverage/awareness.

The following msm article focuses on rewards in cold cases.

wow, that is very similar situation

SO, if the D's had had someone living with them, they'd be looking at that family thing closer, but since they lived alone and family out of state, and seems the house MAY have been cleaned (my view as compared to other immaculate cars or homes having been cleaned by perps) that it may have been outside source but I think with the reward money being raised by Sills, he is now thinking thugs or cartel ?

Glad they caught him! Wish this one had been so easy!
In Texas, a couple and a million dollar home...
Sorta kinda close. Copycat maybe. The son has already been arrested.

Ok,then a "hoodlum" will rat out another "hoodlum"......
Will it be anonymous or will everybody know who the hoodlum will be who is ratting out the other hoodlum(s)?
Basically, he is calling the person who will receive the Reward a Hoodlum....
If it was That Important for a Reward, the Reward would have been Implemented long before Now.....What are the strategies? I don't buy the Hoodlum story..... There's got to be "other" reasons. I understand a Reward does raise an issue with keeping their names out in the public and keeping the Dermond case in the public eye is a good thing......
I can't see Sheriff Sills changing his ways after 40 years of doing something a different way, so there has to be more reasons for this than Just a hoodlum ratting out another hoodlum........
IMOO.

Imo, after over a month without significant leads, the Honorable Sheriff Sills, realizes the frustration among investigators and is attempting to relight the fire in the Dermond investigation.
I suggest that everyone share the above msm link with national msm and all social media sites to spread awareness in this case.. TIA

Maybe the increased reward, if highly publicized and clearly communicated, will at least get the case back in the media and perhaps motivate someone to check their own security cameras or revisit that week-end mentally. Maybe someone who assumed this has nothing to do with them, so why bother, will give it more thought. Or, maybe this potential "hoodlum" does know something and will be willing to contact LE. You know, turn over a new leaf in life, get a fresh start. Maybe a wife or girlfriend of the perp. has suspicions but couldn't get involved due to her financial dependency on the perp. I would guess that the perp., if he has a romantic partner or spouse, is highly controlling and perhaps abusive towards his partner. The reward could motivate such a partner to contact LE.

Maybe if there are two perps. one is the weaker partner in the crime and news of an increased reward may get him or HER to entertain thoughts of contacting LE. Maybe the weaker partner didn't kill but was involved some other way and thinks they would not be charged with murder. Could interpret news of the increased reward as an indication that LE would have resources available to help him or her out of a mess that they didn't intend to find themselves in.

Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.

Maybe, if nothing else, it sends a message to the perp. that they are still working the case. He must be feeling smug, perhaps even amused by the apparent failure of LE to figure this all out. This could be a smoke screen to let the perp. THINK they have nothing.

I remember my uncle, who was in law enforcement, telling me about 40 years ago how "hoodlums ratting out other hoodlums" is exactly that way that most cases are solved, especially in small towns. I'm not sure if that is still how it works, but it might actually be the main reason for increasing the reward.
