Ugh. :( The first box is a 'maybe' and this one seems a loss. I hate unsolved mysteries. Especially since in this case finding out what happened may be crucial to prevent more of this going on in the future.

In Paris, the French air accident investigation bureau opened and began to examine the damaged cockpit voice recorder that was found in the wreckage of the plane in a rocky raving in the southern French Alps. The recorder is "damaged, but readable," French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told journalists outside his ministry in Paris.

Thanks. :) I had seen that, but I guess I took it to mean they are hoping it's readable. Not sure why I did that. Glad it actually is still workable!

Let me preface by saying that I do believe that aerotoxic syndrome exists and is a definite health issue. Do I think it can cause immediate incapacitation to this degree? Not sure. In any case the Airbus fleet particularly the 320, 319 and 321's are well documentated as being problem planes for fume events. Especially the older gen ones (this particular Germanwings aircraft was manufactured in 1991 and would qualify). The fume events I've experienced have occurred "in the back of the bus". Especially when the pilots elect to turn off some of the air packs ( money saving measure fuel costs etc..). The 321 mid cabin as well as the 319 aft are notorious. Think of passengers feeling sleepy, lightheaded etc. the FA's experience it more severely as they are expending more energy running around completing the service etc.. Cabin is stuffy, no air circulation. The pilots usually experience it less. Their packs are mostly on and the air is "better" up there. I'm simplifying of course but the aerotoxic website is interesting if you'd like to have a look:

The mystery over the cause of the Germanwings flight 9525 crash deepened today when it was reported that the crew failed to answer three attempts by air traffic controllers to contact them.

I would wait a bit before jumping to conclusions here. If that is actually correct, I am sure that site will be gone over with a fine tooth comb to find it. But it sounds like the CVR is readable, that may tell the story. I see there are already sites that jumping to the conspiracy/cover-up conclusion.
 
If the memory card is really out there somewhere on the mountain, its going to be wet/frozen on top of possibly being in pieces.

I am really impressed at how quickly the rescue/recovery teams were activated. I have faith that Germany, France and Spain will work together to discover what caused this crash and do right by the loved ones of the victims. While other countries' post crash actions may be circumspect, these 3 do not strike me as such.
 
Jouty refuses to comment on the voices in the sound recorder. The speed of descent was about 3,500ft per minute, he says. There is a question about rumours of lithium in the cargo. Jouty says such questions have to be investigated.

Jouty can’t say how long it will take to study the audio file, whose voice it is and to interpret the information. “It will take time.” He can’t specify the length of time of the files or the language of the pilots.

UPS 747 Crash Highlights Lithium Battery Danger (flyingmag.com)

Accident investigators have traced a fire that destroyed a UPS Boeing 747 in the United Arab Emirates in 2010 to the lithium batteries being carried in the cargo hold. Unless something is done to prevent similar disasters, the FAA now says such crashes are all but inevitable in the future.

A mother and daughter from Northern Virginia were among those killed . The mother was identified as Yvonne Selke of Nokesville, Va., she was an employee of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. in Washington. Her daughter's name was not released by Germanwings or AP, but a sorority at Drexel University in Philadelphia posted about her on its Facebook page.

The message from Gamma Sigma Sigma Zeta reads:

"Zeta chapter is mourning the loss of our beautiful alumni, Emily Selke. Emily and her mother were abroad the plane from Barcelona to Düsseldorf that crashed yesterday. Emily served as our membership VP while in Zeta and she was an integral part of our growing chapter. She embodied the spirit of Gamma Sigma Sigma. As a person and friend, Emily always put others before herself and cared deeply for all those in her life. Emily will be greatly missed by her fellow sisters of Zeta. Please keep Emily, her mother and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time."
