......co-pilot with a history of depression was suffering from a “personal life crisis” when he locked the captain out of the cockpit of an airliner and flew 149 people into a mountainside at 500mph, it was claimed last night.
Andreas Lubitz, 28, was suspended from Lufthansa’s flight school for several months before being permitted to retrain and qualify as a pilot.

He earned his student pilot license in 2010 after flying more than 1,000 hours, Spohr said.
He spent 11 months as a Lufthansa flight attendant as he waited to become a Germanwings pilot, Spohr said.
Authorities also went through Lubitz's luxury apartment in Dusseldorf,
In 2011, he ran the Lufthansa half marathon in Frankfurt in 1 hour and 48 minutes.

He had recently split up with his partner according to this new article
"Pilot Andreas Lubitz might have been suffering a 'personal crisis' at the time of the fatal Germanwings crash, it was claimed last night.
Reports from Germany suggested the 28-year-old was struggling to cope after a failed relationship when he deliberately ploughed the Airbus A320 into the mountainside, killing his 149 passengers.
The theory emerged just hours after police investigating the disaster announced they had made a 'significant discovery' during a four-hour search of Lubitz's flat, which he is said to have shared with a girlfriend.
Officers refused to reveal details of the potential breakthrough but insisted it was not a suicide note.
Yesterday, Lubitz's boss admitted he had slipped through the ‘safety net’ and should never have been flying."

Finally someone saying something other than he was a nice guy. From German newspaper PNP, translated to English:
http://www.pnp.de/nachrichten/bayer...-Co-Pilot-laut-Bekanntem-psychisch-labil.html
A good friend of the 27-year-old told our newspaper: "He's a freak, he wanted to become a pilot, but he is mentally unstable, therefore, also had his education interrupted for a few months."
Next, the informant reported: "L. is a real Fanat, for him there was only one target to fly the dream he had been in elementary school.." Themselves have shown that even in his apartment. "He had his whole room with wallpapered plane pictures throughout the Lufthansa emblem pictures of old machinery, new, from the largest machines could be seen hanging on the wall and were everywhere aviators. utensils on display, even over his bed The informant also mentioned a "dropout" of his acquaintances. "That's why he interrupted his education. But he did his exam."
