Day 556: 09/11/2008

A difficult week for Kate and me ended on a positive note last night. Monday was the 3rd of November- 18 months since Madeleine was so cruelly taken from us. We do not usually put a lot of store in specific milestones - these being just another day without Madeleine. This week was unusual in that both Kate and I were feeling low at the same time, which is an uncommon occurrence, and we can usually rely on one of us lifting the other.

We continue to work very hard behind the scenes. Our support team has been expanded as we try to identify what has been done, what has not been done and what can still be done to help find Madeleine. We are not yet halfway through the Portuguese files but there is less information within the files than we were expecting. As I have stated many times, someone has a key bit of information that can unlock this frustratingly difficult and painful situation.

Yesterday we went through to Liverpool for a Race Night organised by the Greenhills Taverners Society- a group who organise fundraising events for local good causes- along with family and friends. On this occasion all proceeds were going towards Madeleines Fund. Around 200 people turned up and everyone enjoyed a good night. Liverpool and Everton donated signed shirts which were auctioned and with tickets and a raffle around £2000 has been raised. A taxi driver, taking home some of our friends, even got in to the spirit of things by donating his fare to the fund. Well done everyone and thanks for all the messages of support prayers- we left Liverpool in much better spirits than when we arrived!

Day 557: 10/11/2008

Correction to my entry last night. After adding all the money up the total raised at the race night was actually £5000! Well done everyone in Liverpool.

How nice for Gerry and Kate. I am sure that will pay a few months mortgage at least.

I just wanted to help the McCann's out here. What has been done: Children were left unattended in a strange country, strange bed and strange apt. Cadaver dogs made hits in the rental apt., the rental car and on KM's clothes. Searches were conducted. Interviews were held. What has not been done: The truth has not been told. There has been no explanation for discrepancies in timelines or regarding the cadaver dog hits. What can still be done: The first priority should be to TELL THE TRUTH. Once that is done, all the rest will fall into place.

This is a question that has been bandied about the Caylee forums, but I've never read an answer.

How long after death does the smell of decomposition rise to a point a cadaver dog will hit? Would Madeleine have had to been dead minutes, hours?

I've only read about this case in a peripheral kind of way, but reading these threads has me so intrigued. I remember that she disappeared the weekend I gave birth to my first son. It's hard to believe almost 20 months have gone by.

Hi MomofBoys - welcome to the Maddie forum :)

The length of death depends on the dog. Generally speaking it takes approximately 2 hours before the dog will hit on the smell. Some dogs pick it up in a very short time, I read 10 minutes, but I don't think that is the norm.

The dogs used in this case were the best dogs in England and maybe even in the world. It has been said that they are never wrong. One dog was used to pick up traces of blood and the other was a cadaver dog. There a video links of the dogs working in the dog thread. I'll try to find the link for you.

I think they have definitely been told to shut-up, if only for PR reasons. For one thing, this blog and their constant drumming of support is now being talked about as "proof" of how fake they are, to they really would be crazy to keep it up. Why feed the frenzy even more?

Even more importantly, legally, they are in a different place now. They are no longer seen as victims, but as possible criminals. Obviously, they have to act differently. If I was their lawyer, I wouldn't be allowing a peep from them again.

Some of the comments here seem very strange to me. It's as if people think only the guilty have to defend themselves. I think I'd defend myself ten times harder against a false accusation than a true, one, really. Can you imagine many things worse than not only losing a child, but then being accussed of having killed that child yourself, IF you hadn't dont it?

I still don't feel that there is nearly enough evidence to indicate that the parents committed a crime beyond the negligence of leaving their children alone. A lot of the hardest evidence is already being disputed a few days later by experts in the UK, and even the Portugese police admit they don't have much. (If they did, the McCans would surely be in a portugese jail, and not back home.)

Think about it - if your child had been kidnapped in a foreign country, a country who's language you don't speak, a country known (at least in Europe) as being pretty backwards when it comes to law enforcement - what would you do? So many people act as if their behavior proves guilt. Sorry, but if I was unjustly accused of a crime in a situation like theirs, I would have run my scared butt right back to my home country and gotten lawyers in both countries, too.

It's simply naive to believe that being innocent means you have nothing to fear. Innocent people have been *executed* in the US, a country with a much better track record of crime solving and much, much better forensic scientists. Sorry, but wouldn't feel like taking my chances waiting for the Portugese police to pin a crime on me, either.

Shrinky, crime-free according to the laws of most countries

Oh dear me! No evidence? HA! These people had plenty of opportunity initially to admit that they had left the child and hence ensure that the police had all the available information. To claim immediately that the child had been abducted with no evidence at all that this had occurred - to be a party to invented abductors (tanners ludicrous claim) and to claim that they beleived the twins may have been sedated yet not have them immediately tested - actually the list goes on and on! There is plenty of evidence - but no concrete proof in law. I think it is you who are naive to beleive the McCanns are innocent - guilty only of neglect - personally I doubt they did neglect her - I think there is something much worse behind this sorry tale. Why, for example, does a man of the type of Brian Kennedy support them - hands on support, not just financial.

There are powerful people behind the McCanns - and powerful motives for protecting them. The level of protection is unprecedented! Has anyone heard anything at all about the McCanns, no kiss and tell stories, no rumours - no prying press. Cast your mind back to the revelations that Kate and Gerry had been challenged by Madeleine about them not coming to her when she cried. remeber that this revelation was supposed to have been leaked by the PJ? Leaked to a McCann supporter (a Spanish journalist, I forget his name), who then went to the press. Why would a McCann supporter play the game of the PJ, which had - according to Mitchell - been timed to devalue their visit to the European Parliament. How odd that the revelation was left until the McCanns were on the train coming back! Was this ever part of the PJ files? Ho wodd tha tit apparently was not!

So, dont talk to me about the innocence of the McCanns - dont talk to me of 'no evidence'! There is plenty of evidence - but more pressure and more behind the scenes manipulation to overcome it!

Bland 'no evidence' claims may work with those who have not followed this case from the start - but for those of us who have registered each inconsistancy, noted every oddity - for us, there is no doubt that the McCanns have much to explain.

Exactly, Salem!

Agree wholeheartedly! The fact that the only court cases have been regarding the more extreme claims (wife swapping, for example) proves that the McCanns know that a straight case about their failure to answer questions about the events of that night - and the nights prior to Madeleines 'going missing' - would be there undoing.

The questions listed by Tony Bennet and the Madeleine Foundation need to be answered.

To me, one of the most revealing issues is the fact that the 'fund' doesnt 'fund' the posters and wristbands etc...people are expected to buy them. What kind of 'fund' is that!

Amazing the way a few grand collected can raise spirits Gerry!

Merry Christmas to Everyone on the Madeleine threads! :blowkiss:

OMG - is their anything that could happen that would keep Jerry from having a good run to make himself feel better? Wow - a good road race and raffle, and he and Kate feel all better again!

Nothing ever changes, does it? :furious: Someday I hope he wakes up in the night and realizes that sadness for his daughter and common exercise don't make for a convincing mix. (Well, ok, I realize that's never going to happen, but I wish it would.)

Day 650: 2/11/2009

Where does the time go? I cannot believe it is 3 months since I wrote this blog- not that this seems like the most appropriate term for such a sporadic update. We remain incredibly busy and focussed on the search whilst trying to maintain a near normal life. For Kate and me life without Madeleine does not get easier but Sean and Amelie continue to give us a tremendous amount of joy. Amazingly Madeleine remains a large part of their life and they talk about her daily. We just have to find her!

We have a small team of people working tremendously hard behind the scenes- please do not think that because there is regular coverage in the media that the search has stopped.

I visited Lisbon last month and met with the UK Ambassador and our Portuguese lawyer. We need to explore every way we can work with the authorities to enhance the search for Madeleine.

Thanks to everyone who has sent letters, donations, prayers and words of support. It is all greatly appreciated.

What is it with this guy and the word 'Incredibly'?

Does he not know that this means 'In a way which is difficult to beleive'?

Well, Mr Gerry McCann, how appropriate is this as a word used to describe much of what you say and do!

Note again the mention of the twins and how well they are doing.

He can't help it.

It's always about the twins and how "amazinglly" they are acting.

I dont know about the word "amazingly" but the word ive heard more than any other in this case is "ludicrous". I see it on this board many times also. Its like the party line..we have to say its "ludicrous" and people might believe us eventually.

You can be forgiven for not being an expert on linguistics but "incredibly" is commonly used in the Uk instead of "extremely/very":-

Examples:-

He is incredibly ignorant.
She is incredibly stupid.

yeah, he should be horsewhipped for mentioning his kids with any kind of pride.

Sadly though, he'd be criticised if he didn't mention them either.

Poor guy can't win either way.
