this may have been answered cause I'm way behind again but what is Rex a nickname for? I don't think I've ever heard of someone named Rex
I know several. Interestingly, in each case it would be the name for someone like the infamous sub drowner, Richard Stockton Rush III. E.g., the situation when parents are clearly lacking in imagination. So Rex would unofficially stand for the first name, and allow to drop “III”. Why people choose Rex? It would seem lightweight to me, but in the US, where even presidents go by Jimmy or Jack or Bill, maybe Rex is “short, yet kingly”?

This is why I thought that maybe Rex Heuermann was initially William Heiermann II, and that he simply went by Rex, and that the belt with the initials was his own.

Personally, i don’t like “prison justice” because it looks as if the administration is not in charge. Also, what happens if it is later found out that the convict was wrongly accused? The fact of prison justice would increase payouts to them to astronomical ones, and this all, too, will be out of the taxpayers’ pockets. However, I once spoke to a young convict, who told me that in their world, a murderer was OK. Rapists were not, and it would start at the very beginning. “Show me your papers”. And hiding the papers, he said, won’t help. I assume that a serial killer is the same as a rapist in their world.

A scientist in me wonders if allocating one prison for serial killers and hosting them all together would make sense, but then again, what if one was unjustly convicted?

I’m torn with the others. The proximity of all the victims would make you logically think it is all one killer, however, I am trying to look at this from the angle of a SK and as someone who lives on Long Island (weird, I know lol ). Where can I dispose of a body that is not high traffic at night, dark, difficult to navigate, etc? Would more than one depraved mind come to the same conclusion as RH that Ocean Parkway is the best bet? I could see more than one person finding that to be ideal. But then my brain goes back to logic and thinks there is no way.
@Kikalina not weird at all. I actually have a whole post in my drafts written up about the unique geography of Long Island and how it figures into the LISK story - especially why/how two killers could be using Gilgo to dump bodies at the same time.

I'm not from LI but interested in geography of layout because it seems too strange of a coincidence.. I read your edited post, thanks.
@kittythehare If you grew up on LI and especially if you had access to a car - you know all the nooks and crannies on LI. Because it's only about 20 miles wide (north/south) it only takes abut 25 minutes to get from the North Sore to the South Shore. Us kids would set out to explore *everywhere*. No doubt RH knows of plenty of places to stash bodies. Gilgo is so unique. A barrier island mainly used as a thoroughfare. No popular beaches along that stretch and not much reason to stop unless you are out pole fishing. Even then you'd more likely go to Captree just east at the end of that barrier island.

Cops seen carrying mysterious bags as evidence from alleged Gilgo Beach killer’s home after tearing up backyard deck, tiles

"A police dog was brought in to nose around the Long Island backyard of accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann Saturday, while investigators dismantled a wooden deck and removed cement tiles from the dilapidated green space."
Okay so the most interesting thing to me about this article is that we can see RH has a wooden target board set up. Theres no way he is shooting bullets back there so whats left. Knives? Archery? Hammers? I'm starting to wonder if RH was a bit of a "prepper". 200-300 guns, the plans to buy multiple lots in SC and possibly combine them, (decommissioned?) military vehicles, he might have been hoarding food but don't know that for sure.

Off topic...I lived in Pittsburgh for several years back in the mid 90s and recall several of the basements had random toilets in the basement. We called it the "Pittsburgh Potty" lol. Just a random toilet in the middle of unfinished basements, no showers, sinks (other than maybe a mop sink). It was weird.
@investigatefred So I'm fascinated by outdated and lost architectural details. One of them being the Pittsburgh Potty. Theres multiple theories and one is that they were a way to deal with sewage overflow, rather than a toilet backing up to the first floor, the sewage would be contained to the basement.

The park (Brady Park) is small with a small wooded area, it’s should still be canvased with K9 Units, as should the much larger Massapequa Preserve which is a MUCH more likely dump site as it is massive, with many many access points available 24/7, and very dimly lit at night …oh, and a block away from a relative of the family (who potentially traveled with Rex’s wife). I’d be shocked if nothing turned up in there, truly.
I keep thinking the same way as you - theres got to be something else hidden around the area. It's not abnormal for LE to contact Geocaching.com to have them disable caches in an area where they are searching. Geocachers are notorious for finding bodies and crime scenes. I'd be looking in the areas that don't have any caches... now I'm thinking I'm overdue for a day of caching. We comb an area! Pic attached of caches in Massapequa Park.

Do we know how long the authorities waited after matching his DNA, to arrest him?

Edit: nevermind, I read through the court docs. They collected his DNA from the discarded pizza Jan 26th 2023 and first matched to a hair found on Megan Waterman around June 12th 2023.

The target board, if that is what it is, seem to be hung awfully high.

Do serial killers study or read about other serial killers?

Richard Ramirez claimed to be an expert on the subject so we know he did.
Heuermann obsessively searched up "LISK" so he definitely was reading about serial killers.
Both Ted Bundy and Ed Kemper were LE consultants for other SK cases.
Gacy has painted portraits of Dahmer while in prison.
Dennis Rader was keeping tack of LISK and had theories, even being so gracious to write to the press just yesterday about it!

I've definitely read and see interviews where one serial killer has been critical of another.

IMO - it's safe to say, yes, some have an interest in those that share the same "hobby".

I think you're exactly right about SG's death. It's very possible it was brought on by drug induced mania, taken by choice or by mickey. Why all of a sudden, after working with him and trusting him, did she all of a sudden think her driver was part of "them"? I do though wonder though if JB had other guests that night.

RH's MO seems to be more calling his victims and meeting up rather than trolling for someone on the street or in a bar. Too many witnesses. That the police, early on it seems, didn't give any credence to Amber Costello's boyfriend about the guy they'd rolled a few days before her disappearance and the description of his vehicle...that's a BIG bungle. IMO

I think it was not RH because for him, it would seem, planning a murder would be an important part. I wouldn’t be surprised if he left some signatures.

As to the police, not giving credence to Amber C’s boyfriend is not surprising. Didn’t we read in the article about the relatives of the victims posted here that when SG’s mom called the police, the moment they heard S was an escort, they looked visibly disinterested? I am far from thinking James Burke was a serial killer, but the events happened in 2010, when Burke was not de jure but de facto Suffolk police chief (he was appointed in 2012). Perhaps his involvement in purveying SW to parties was well-known, and Suffolk police was afraid of crossing their boss, or afraid the investigation would end nowhere?

I think he might have the genoset that some alcoholics, binge eaters and hoarders have. Ultimately, the signal “isn’t it enough?” doesn’t come. Usually this type of hoarding starts with over shopping, but not always. RH looks the type. I wonder if he is a secret alcoholic.

I also think that he does resemble an old grouchy cop, and wonder if he keeps a cop uniform in the basement?

For anyone ruling out other potential victims because they aren't his type. Note his Google searches... "mature escorts manhattan". Other descriptors used in searches - CP, black, chubby, fat, short and skinny.

I'd like to see all of the search history but guess we'll have to wait.
