I don't know whether this is causative, but I pray hard for the detectives working on unsolved serial cases to make breakthroughs. I have particularly prayed for this case to get solved recently. Please join me in doing so if you remain to pray. I believe this practice to be especially helpful if you're obsessed with cold cases and sometimes wonder why you put so much time into them, then one rabbithole and several hours or days later, realise, this isn't really any of my business. Pray for the detectives and others working on the hardest of cases. And we might see more of this.

WANTAGH, NY – APRIL 15: An aerial view of police cars near where a body was discovered in the area near Gilgo Beach and Ocean Parkway on Long Island on April 15, 2011 in Wantagh, New York.

Police have been conducting a prolonged search of the area after finding ten sets of human remains. Of the ten only four sets of remains have been identified as missing female prostitutes in their 20s who had been working in the online escort business. Police, working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), suspect that a single serial killer may be in the New York area focusing on sex workers

New York authorities have taken a suspected serial killer into custody wanted in connection with the unsolved deaths of 11 people who were found in a string of killings on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011.

The suspect is being looked at over the Gilgo Beach murders, including the so-called “Gilgo Four,” women found wrapped in burlap within days of each other in late 2010, and seven other bodies that were later eyed as possibly being connected.

The hunt for a suspect in what’s become known as “the Long Island serial killer” started more than a year before police released a 911 call made by Shannan Gilbert before she vanished in 2010, CBS News reported..

The “Gilgo Four” were later identified as Maureen Brainard-Barnes, abducted in 2007; Melissa Barthelemy in 2009; and Megan Waterman and Amber Costello, who went missing in 2010.

The full audio of Gilbert’s 911 call was released by the Suffolk County Police Department last year, as well as maps and other images showing what authorities believe happened on May 1, 2010, the night she disappeared, according to CBS News
Police released photos of a belt found during the initial Gilgo Beach investigation which they believe was handled by the perpetrator and did not belong to any of the victims

WOW. Literally right down the street. IMO, this would seem to imply that all the victims were killed or at least dismembered at his home. There must be a trove of evidence in there.
He had construction sites im assuming as a builder/architect I would imagine those could be used or even at the house or he kept them at the house. They suspected they had been kept alive and dead for a period and all dumped together.

I'm exercising restraint in my optimism. There are a lot of "powerful and connected" people in this case who would love for this case to disappear. I hope this is legit but after the way this case has been mishandled and obstructed up until now, I have my doubts.

I look forward to hearing Hawkshaw's take on all this.
This!!!!!

I’m so glad that an arrest has finally been made. My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s families. I remember watching a documentary about the murders and the disturbing phone calls the killer made to victim Melissa Barthelemy’s (then 16 year old) Sister for six weeks in 2009 after she disappeared. Law enforcement triangulated that the calls that were coming from Times Square, Madison Square Garden and Massapequa, a short drive from Gilgo Beach. The perp is an evil, sadistic monster it will be a relief for many people that an arrest has been made and he won’t be able to kill any more.

I wonder if his clients, work colleagues and everyone who knows him are in total shock.

Heuermann, who is married and has two kids, has lived in the house since the 1980s.

Law enforcement sources tell DailyMail.com he has been on their radar since last year. Investigators matched him to the crimes by tracking the phone calls made from burner phones to the victims' cell phones over 10 years ago.

The source added that 'good, old fashioned police work' cracked the case, rather than any DNA developments.

The location of the phone calls matched Heuermann's home address and his office address. It remains unclear what specific piece of evidence led to his arrest last night. He is due to go before a judge in Long Island at noon.

Why did it take investigators so many years to track the phone calls? We had talked about this since the early days.

ETA: I do recall some of the problem with DNA testing for crimes was stonewalled by New York state government. For some reason, they didn't approve of its use in criminal cases until recently. MOO
