An Indianapolis man charged with killing a 6-year-old Kentucky boy earlier this year is competent to stand trial, according to a correctional center psychiatrist.

ABC 36 in Lexington reports that Dr. Amy Trivette, with the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center testified on Tuesday that Exantus was competent to stand trial.

Exantus' attorney Bridgette Hofler told ABC 36 that she believes Exantus had some type of psychotic break and that medical professionals could not explain why. She also said she was not confident in the results of the competency hearing.

The competency hearing is set to continue on November 2.

Accused killer of 6-year-old Kentucky boy to undergo another mental evaluation
The accused killer of a 6-year-old boy has received one mental evaluation but will undergo another before trial.

Ronald Exantus, 33, was deemed competent to assist in his defense. But when public defenders said they intend to introduce mental-health evidence at trial, prosecutors responded that they want Exantus to be evaluated.

Wednesday’s brief proceeding offered no explanation why the Indianapolis divorced father of three allegedly drove to Kentucky, broke into a Versailles house and stabbed Logan James Dean Tipton to death with a knife in December 2015. Prosecutors have given notice that they will seek the death penalty.

Ronald Exantus Faces New Judge In Case

The Commonwealth filed a motion to do their own competency examination on Exantus Tuesday.

The judge, Phil Patton, said he would sign off on that.

The defense filed a motion for continuance of the trial, wanting the current August date moved back.

The judge did not grant that request but didn’t deny it, saying they could come back to it.

Should Ronald Exantus murder trial be moved? Judge to decide soon

http://www.kentucky.com/news/local/crime/article156378874.html

Pretrial publicity and racially charged comments on social media and websites should require moving the trial of accused killer Ronald Exantus from Woodford County to an adjoining county, preferrably Fayette, a defense attorney argued Thursday.

But a prosecutor argued that Exantus, accused of murder in the December 2015 death of 6-year-old Logan James Dean Tipton, is capable of receiving a fair trial in Woodford County.

Special Judge Phillip Patton said he will decide within a week whether to grant a defense request to move the trial, which is scheduled to start Aug. 11 in Versailles.

Trial of man accused of killing 6-year-old boy moved to Lexington

A judge on Friday ordered the trial of accused killer Ronald Exantus to be moved from Woodford County to neighboring Fayette County.

Special Judge Phil Patton issued the order a day after a public defender sought to move the trial because of pretrial publicity and racist comments posted on websites and social media, while a prosecutor argued that Exantus could receive a fair trial in Woodford County.

6-year-old was killed with a knife. Trial to decide if mental illness or drugs to blame.

http://www.kentucky.com/news/local/crime/article201766834.html

Was the accused killer of a 6-year-old Versailles boy insane or was his erratic behavior self-induced because he took synthetic drugs?

That’s what a Fayette County jury must decide in the trial of Ronald Exantus, 34, who could face execution if he is found guilty in the death of Logan James Dean Tipton.

Jury selection in the four-week trial is scheduled to start Monday in Lexington. The trial was moved from Versailles to Fayette County because of pretrial publicity.

Prosecutors showed jurors Tuesday a recording of Versailles police interviewing Ronald Exantus, an Indianapolis man accused of killing Logan Tipton with a butcher knife.

In the interview, Exantus appears calm and initially coherent but frequently rambles. His comments grow more bizarre as the interview progresses to talk of why he stopped in Versailles and attacked the child.

Exantus, who worked as a dialysis nurse, says in the recording that he was thinking about the TV shows "Grey's Anatomy" and "Scandal." The Tiptons' home is on the corner of Gray and Douglas.
