2 cents time on allergies, coughing, etc.

For the last 25 years, my allergies went into HIGH gear every spring, and every fall. On top of such, I have COPD. Nothing as to the one time skin tests as to defining.

For many years, I was hospitalized with pneumonia, I went in another time as it got to pleurisy. Every year was coughing and bronchitis it seemed. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad chit.

Then... I found my savior! The National Allergy Bureau who tracks pollen and molds. MOO.

I signed up for the allergy notifications as to pollen as my events 2x a year were ALWAYS in spring and fall. I thought... it must be pollen in spring, mold stuff in fall as I'm in my garden a lot. So I signed up for notifications for pollen counts which you can sign up for. And they send out when pollen/molds are high in your area. (Started getting this year's notifications 3 weeks ago) They even list which trees/plants/grasses are high so if you want to track.. you can.

I started taking Cetrizine (iirc equivalent to Zyrtec?) when I got the notifications. (Right now, $11.99/300 tablets )

Alas and alack.... I have never had a bronchitis, coughing etc etc since then.

For those who want to know/try... here is the site and put in your zip code in the upper left of landing page and they ONLY send when pollen/mold counts high in your area.

It's been a GODSEND to me MOO

Yeah. Nothing like sneezing into a mask. Gross. I am keeping a few extra masks for quick changes.

DH bought this air purifier at Costco yesterday. It's regular spot will be in our bedroom, but the unit is very lightweight and can easily be moved around the house. Winix True HEPA 4 Stage Air Purifier with Wi-Fi and Additional Filter (costco.com)

I hope you will give us a review of it. For example, how noisy is it? If it interferes with sleeping, that would be a problem.

If I make it to Costco soon, I might get one in hopes it would help with our spring pollen allergies. I guess I could also order it online.

I love my air purifier. I keep it near my bedroom door, right under my A/C vent. I think it’s helping me this allergy season. Mine is very quiet and has an option to have no illuminated buttons at night.

My friend mentioned last night how much the air purifier was helping her sleep. She said she’s not waking up coughing at night. She has a dry cough and is not a smoker. It crossed my mind that maybe she has that same type asthma mentioned here. I will mention it to her next time I see her.

Her daughter has a cat. She was thinking of moving the air purifier to the living room. I told her not to. Keep it in the bedroom so there isn’t cat hair in the filter.

Absolutely no noise: We don't even know that it's running. DH had an "at home" day yesterday and spent about an hour moving the air purifier around the house. Every room went immediately to the blue light indicating that the air is clean - even the laundry room where we expected there to be a lot of dust. During the daytime, we notice the bright blue light on top of the air purifier, but the unit goes into "sleep" mode at night, and there are two tiny lights that are barely visible.

Neither DH nor I have ever smoked, and we don't allow others to smoke in our home. When my sister is here, she smokes in the basement during cold weather and outdoors on the deck when it's warm. We don't have drapes: Wood blinds in every room that are easily dusted or wiped clean. Limited "knick-knacks", no indoor plants. We have Merry Maids cleaning service every other week, and we keep things clean in between. When the blue light came on in every room indicating that the air is clean, we were pleased to know that we are doing our best to keep our living environment allergen/dust/mold/pollen-free and safe :)

Thanks! It sounds like a good item to purchase.

I bought an air purifier last week. Do you run it 24 hrs a day even if you're out running errands for a few hrs. So far, we run it 24 hrs. a day. My husband notices an improvement in his allergies.

We've had ours running 24/7 since we got it. Furnace is still running, so there's probably dust moving around constantly. We like to open a few windows when the weather gets nice, and we're hoping that the air purifier will reduce outdoor pollens and molds coming into the house. When we start needing A/C, we will probably still want the air purifier on when we open our bedroom window at night.

When will it be over? 3 key numbers scientists are watching to track the pandemic (nbcnews.com)

There won't be an on/off switch for the pandemic, but epidemiologists are watching certain metrics for signs of improvement.

Last week, President Joe Biden said his administration's goal is to get the country "closer to normal" by the Fourth of July.

While it appears the U.S. is moving in the right direction — a majority of people over age 65, for example, have received at least one dose of a vaccine — scientists tracking the pandemic say that to get a national view, it's critical to look separately at each state, even each city.

"If you look at it as a monolithic kind of event, you'll miss a lot of detail," said Dr. Thomas Giordano, chief of infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Giordano views the Covid-19 outbreak in the U.S. as a "series of micro-pandemics."...

I've done the early spring all rooms window opening with attic fan on this year.... prior to pollen season . I do at a minimum 2x a year in spring and fall, and during this period I also do the "self cleaning" of my oven as it vents into the house any burnoff and smells if I don't do.... All clean smelling.

This sounds so refreshing :) We're expecting several days of temps in low 60s, so DH put up a couple of screens so we can open windows in the afternoon when it warms up. Overnights are still chilly, and the furnace will be running for several more weeks. We'll have flannel sheets on our bed until Mother's Day :D Most nurseries warn against planting annuals before May 20 due to overnight frost; we usually plant our flowers over Memorial Day weekend.

If winter's really over here in southeastern lower Michigan, it wasn't bad at all. We had snow but only one big snowfall last month (2/15) when we got 8" over two days. We had some very cold days but not weeks of frigid temperatures like we've had in recent years. We haven't had an ice storm, but we did have several days with gusty winds. Best of all, we've had days and days with sunshine and bright blue skies: Really can't complain about winter this year :)

True. We had one real cold snap, only 2 snowstorms here, and it has not been bad at all.

Too chilly for planting yet, I have been doing starts in the house.

Maggie Mulqueen: Covid vaccines mean the end of quarantine is in sight. For some, the view doesn't look so good. (nbcnews.com)

When the merry-go-round of our lives stopped last spring, some people felt comfortable with the pace of life for the first time. Now the ride is starting again.

For all the spring break partiers in Miami and the eager grandparents boarding planes, there is a silent group — maybe not a majority, but a not-insignificant minority — who aren’t happy that quarantine is most likely drawing to a close.

The exact size of this group will never be known because it can be shameful to admit that certain components of lockdown were not only welcome, but downright joy-filled. People with social anxiety, introverts and others who find the “normal” expectations of life stressful woke up to a world that more closely resembled the one of their dreams...
