I am sorry you are going thru that: i also have the cough variant asthma: In fact when I first began to cough 40 years ago , it was the only symptom I had. The coughing was horrible and it took at least two years to be properly diagnosed with asthma. I required the use of oral steroids for two years to get it under control, and now I use Flovent steroid inhaler on a daily basis. Twenty years ago, for no apparent reason I again developed an episode of uncontrollable coughing. I hope you get that cough under control soon: it does extremely annoying ,especially at night time. Take care.

I too used to have awful seasonal allergies and bronchitis twice a year, twice in hospital from allergy to pneumonia, once went to pleurisy. Allergies indeed can turn into more and into bacterial!

Three or four years ago I signed up for alerts in my specific zip code as to when pollen season is in spring through fall, and start taking Zyrtec generic (your drug of choice) when FIRST and through when high in my area ............... and then ZIP, NADA since then! Not once since.

I swear by this email that is auto sent by the Foundation..Research as you may want to me but is a Godsend MOO as I live in my yard iykwim. NAB | National Allergy Bureau will have a link to sign up for your zip. I've started getting them already this season so taking. I love this.. so simple.

"Sign up now to get the most out of NAB! Once you've signed up for a free My NAB account, you can receive regular notifications about allergy levels in your area."

I recently put in my new A/C filter which was Honeywell #7 for allergies. It was the last one I had on hand. When I got my new A/C system last June, this particular brand and rating was all I could find locally.

Anyway, I went online to order a couple more, or at least set myself a reminder to do so. I found some that are even higher quality #11 that may work even better. They are not that much more expensive either. $12/ea but you do have to buy a 4 pack tho.

Filtrete 18x18x1, AC Furnace Air Filter, MPR 1000, Micro Allergen Defense, 4-Pack

For those who might not be familiar with the term "cough-variant asthma", this is a good article written in layman's terms.

Cough-Variant Asthma Symptoms, Treatments, Causes, and More (webmd.com)

Cough-variant asthma is a type of asthma in which the main symptom is a dry, non-productive cough. (A non-productive cough does not expel any mucus from the respiratory tract.) People with cough-variant asthma often have no other "classic" asthma symptoms, such as wheezing or shortness of breath...

Great information-- thanks for posting it

I received an email notification from Beaumont Health this morning to schedule my vaccine appointment. I will get my shot this Wednesday at noon. DH hasn't been notified yet, but he'll be driving me, so maybe he can get his vaccination at the same time. I was hoping to avoid the 1/2 hour drive to Southfield but wasn't going to miss the opportunity to get my vaccine sooner rather than later.

Great news!!!!! you kinda have to go wherever they are giving the shot-
we had to drive to the Henry Ford Medical Center in Dearborn--everything
was so well organized

Yay! I hope your DH can be vaccinated too.

I received email confirmation/reminder this morning. Beaumont choices are Southfield or Dearborn. Neighbor went to Southfield - straight down Lahser. Takes about 30 minutes. When I scheduled yesterday, there were many appointment times available throughout the day. If they're not busy, maybe DH can have his shot, too. That way, we can return together for second dose and avoid additional trips to the facility.

It would be great if you both could get vaccinated at the same time - I feel so much better since I had my first shot- on the way to full protection with two shots and back to some semblance of normalcy- though we still have to be careful--

Now that Johnson and Johnson are available for vaccinations I expect the pace of vaccinations all across the country to pick up quickly, which is a very good thing. I kinda would have liked the one shot, but one cannot be choosy: when you are called, you answer the call and get which ever one they give you.

This staying at home all the time means, even with a new A/C air filter, I am still breathing the same circulated air. I do open the doors and air out the house when I can. However, I am trying to get thru allergy season without such a struggle, constant meds, eye drops, etc. The oak trees blooming are killing me. Plus dog hair from my foster fur babies.

I researched air purifiers to see if that would help. I bought one and had it running during the day while I was in the living room. I thought it was making a difference. However, my daughter got sick with a sinus and ear infection that is now in her bronchial tubes. So I sent it home with her for a few days. She thinks it’s helping her. She is ordering one now too. My next test is to run it in my room at night to see if that helps. Anyone else use an air purifier to help stay healthy? It is probably a good idea even without the added risk of Covid.

Your post prompted DH and I to research air purifiers over the weekend. We think it might be a good idea to have one in the master bedroom since that is where my nighttime asthma cough happens. The Costco members coupon brochure arrived by mail today, and there is a Winix air purifier available with a $30 discount. Not sure when DH will make a trip to Costco, but he will certainly take a look at the air purifier.

I had my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine early this afternoon. The entire process took about 30 minutes - arrival, check-in, injection, self-monitoring for 15 minutes. I barely felt the shot and have been moving my arm around frequently to ward off discomfort. I asked if DH could get his shot today, too, but they have to stick to the lottery protocol for now. Hopefully, he will be invited to get the vaccine shortly. I'll get my second dose on March 24 at noon, and I cancelled my reservation on the Oakland County Health Department site.

I mentioned our new air purifiers to my friend after she was telling me her allergy symptoms. She jumped online and ordered one.

Last night was my test with it in my bedroom which is about 12’ x 15’. I sleep with my door shut and I use the ceiling fan most nights. I noticed this morning I did not wake up with a headache but my sinuses were dry.

After my doctor appointment, in the rain, the headache came back. The pollen was everywhere of course, and the pressure change could be factors today. I do think it helps because I’m not as stuffy plus, I’m not sneezing as much.

My daughter thinks it’s helping her too. She goes back to the allergist today I think.

I've been researching air purifiers too. I’ve been looking at the Blue Air brand. Costco carries it online but it’s larger then I need. I'm going to look at the Winix brand.

Great that you got your shot---I am due for my 2nd shot on 3/24 also---
Hopefully your husband can get vaccinated soon

I appreciate this discussion about air purifiers. Pollen season will be starting in NC before long, and DH has significant pollen allergies (me, less so). I think such a device sounds promising and I will investigate.

I hate pine pollen! It's yellow and sticks to everything like glue. Last spring was the worst I'd experienced.

I had my first Pfizer shot yesterday, and DH was contacted by Meijer this morning. He scheduled his vaccine for 11:30. Meijer is giving the Moderna shot, but DH didn't want to wait for an invitation by Beaumont Health. Meijer is much closer than the Beaumont facility where I went yesterday and will return to on March 24.

DH and I were discussing air purifiers last night. He could probably buy one today at Lowe's but is interested in the one at Costco. In all the years that I've been seeing an allergy/asthma specialist, owning an air purifier was never discussed. I was always asked about a humidifier, regularly-changed furnace filters, allergy-proof bedding, limited knick-knacks, etc.,
but there was no mention of an air purifier for the master bedroom. We certainly would have gotten one, just like I bought a home nebulizer when that was part of my treatment regimen. DH will probably go to Costco in a week or so and will buy the Winix air purifier that they are featuring. He will also get our annual spring indulgence - a 4# canister of JellyBellys :D

As sick as my youngest has been with allergies and asthma over the years, nobody ever mentioned an air purifier to us either. She’s had allergy testing, shots, breathing treatments, etc.

When my A/C until was replaced last year, I had the UV light installed. Any mold or germ spores entering the unit are killed by the UV light. All my ductwork is new too. Of course, this solution only works if you’re replacing the duct work. The UV light will not destroy anything that has already entered the old duct work.

My daughter says she feel so much better at my place because the air is so clean. I’ve noticed I have less allergy issues also. But the fight against pollen never ends! I cannot open the doors on windy days. So far, I’ve had my little Luvoit Core 300 running continuously in my room for 2 days. I vacuumed the laminate flooring today. I do think it’s making a difference. A good $99 investment for me.
