Earlier this afternoon, a brother of Gökmen Tanis was taken by the police for questioning. The man was picked up at the ROC Midden Nederland in Nieuwegein, where he is following a course.

Tanis came into contact with the police earlier
Tanis has come into contact with the police several times. He has been in court for the following crimes. It is unclear whether he was convicted of this:

• burglary in truck in Best in February 2012
• attempted homicide in December 2013, then shot firearm at flat in Kanaleneiland
• shoplifting in Utrecht in May 2014
• spit out and threatened to agent in October 2014
• November 2014 driven under the influence of alcohol
• window smashed in Utrecht in October 2015 and then destroyed cell at police station
• July 2017 rape, he stood before the court two weeks ago during a pre-trial session

I think they first suspected a New Zealand copycat because this part of the town has many Muslim inhabitants.

It would be nice if they could send extra security to churches, temples and synagogues, since this attacker had previously been involved with ISIS.

During the last 3 weeks... 120 Christians have been killed in one area of Nigeria alone.

I live close to the border of Germany and heard about a hour orso,a helicopter flying over...am not sure if its related to the shootings,but it is very rare that we have helicopters in the air/area.
When it happens,these helicopters are trauma helicopter or from city hall

The police raided an apartment house on the Utrechtse Laan van Engelswier, near the place where the car was found that was associated with the shooting in the tram.

De Laan van Engelswier is three blocks from Tichelaarslaan, where the red Renault Clio was found earlier. The raid was done in a home in a three-storey apartment building. There is a lot of police in the area. The Tichelaarslaan has been closed off for investigation and also a playground for the apartment building of the raid has been fenced off with police ribbons.

German LE and Dutch LE do work very well together.
Utrecht is in the middle of The Netherlands,he can go in all kind of directions..

Local residents: the attack was probably due to relational problems
Residents who say they know Gökmen Tanis from the Kanaleneiland and Lombok neighborhoods don't think he had a terrorist motive. Admittedly, he had periods in which he lived as a religious Muslim, grew his beard and wore long robes. But at other times he drank again. He would have been particularly unstable and frequently in contact with the police.

According to these sources, the attack was probably due to relational problems. Zabit Elmaci, who worked with him in a restaurant where Tanis was active as a dishwasher, says that he got worse about a year or two ago from the moment he divorced his wife.

Some sources say it was his ex who he would have shot in the tram in the first instance, according to others it was a member of his in-laws. The Turkish news agency AA also quotes acquaintances of the man who say it has to do with "family". "We keep all scenarios open," said police spokesman Bernard Jens about this relational motive. "We have to figure it out well, I can't say anything about this."

It would make sense if he carjacked the Clio after the attack, but the carjacking seemed to have happened before.... does that make sense? And was someone IN the car? What happened to them?

For all we know he might have walked to the station and got on a train to, say, Deventer.
