A little bit of humor: http://www.miamiherald.com/living/liv-columns-blogs/dave-barry/article171702477.html

I'm seriously freaked out for all my friends in the path of this storm. Be safe everyone!

Thanks Gardener, I haven't read a Dave Barry column in years! West Palm Beach is where my other daughter lives and they are staying. I just read that the county is evacuating 290k people so I freaked out. After checking the zone map I see that they are not being evacuated. So I'm ready for a bit of relief. From the article:

But at the moment we have roughly a 45-year supply of lentils on hand. This is because we are in Hurricane Preparedness Freakout Mode, and one of the things we Floridians do in this mode is go to Publix and get in long lines to buy mass quantities of things we will never eat. Publix could put out a big display of cans labeled “Toad Intestines Packed In Snail Vomit” and we Floridians would snap them all up in minutes. That’s how prepared we are.

And this:

When we’re not eating our hurricane supplies or waiting in line to buy more, we’re going on the Internet to check the computer models, which are these little lines on a map showing where various computers think the hurricane will go. Checking these lines makes me nervous, so I try not to do it too often. Once every six minutes is plenty.

So true! Thanks again Gardener!

Born and raised in Central and South Fl. but back in NC. My family raises cattle, horses and other animals and they are staying because of caring for them.Praying for a miracle that this storm loses some strength.

I hope your family will be OK. It's tough when you have animals. Do you have concerns in NC? I have a friend in northeast NC on the Chowan River near Edenton who has plans in place that include hauling her two horses, plus disabled husband, mother, aunt and cat to safety in three different locations, depending on the path. She's organized but very worried and stressed. I pray she can just stay home and that everyone in Irma's path gets to safety.

Friends who live in Miami are visiting here in Oregon. They've extended their visit (no point flying home only to evacuate), while their almost-adult kids loaded up two vehicles and headed to Louisiana the other day. Scary stuff.

Friends...we have a trifecta. The 3 pics show the alignment of NHC, GFS and EURO. The alignment began with the noon runs yesterday and continue forecasting a shot up the state of FL.

The storm has weakened a little bit as it has encountered Cuba but is expected to reintensify as it hits the boiling water South of Key West.

The GFS holds its forcast of 891 pressure at entry to Florida, which is a significant cat5 storm. The Keys will be inundated with surge and the entire state will experience major hurricane winds, with Jacksonville at cat3. Entry into Georgia will experience cat2, unheard of in our short lives.

Again, keep watch, things can change. This storm is huge and has a mind of its own. Its all about the turn.

If you are staying in South Florida, I hope you have found a place with hurricane windows, shutters, and tied down roofs. If not, please do NOW, or preferably, get out. You still have time.

Watching and waiting with fingers crossed for all you guys. Out of curiosity, what is the weather like in Florida today?

Jacksonville is 70 degrees with 100% humidity. High is predicted to be 83.

Local weatherman (WJXT) looking at 8 am update, predicts a Cat 1 in Jax.

The water temps going into FL are in the 90's. Irma's speed right now is 150 and 927 mb

A question for you, Henry.

If the storm runs slap bang up the spine of Florida with one foot in the Atlantic and the other in the Gulf, what effect could that have on its behaviour?

Could it continually replenish its supply of rain as parts of it pass over the sea before passing back over land?

And could the warmth from the water help it maintain its strength longer than might otherwise be the case?
