I just got home and saw the tweet. As I posted earlier, my family went through Andrew and it looks like Irma is going to be worse. Back in 1992 I remember the news showing stories of "hurricane parties" and a lot of people, including us, decided to ride it out.

Conditions deteriorated so quickly. I remember standing outside, admiring the force of nature then just an hour or so later me, my husband and kids and the teen next door were running from room to room, scrambling out as the roof blew off and the windows imploded. We ended up in an interior powder room. The noise was deafening; it sounded like a freight train. I'll never forget that night.

My daughter's flight was canceled but she got on a 7 pm flight and is on her way to New York. My son-in-law says he's leaving with the pets tomorrow. He's from Washington State and he doesn't have any idea of what the roads and weather will be like tomorrow. I'm afraid he's going to be forced to stay. They're in Zone C/B.

He's planning to drive the pets to Tampa but my husband told me when I got home that areas there are also being evacuated now. It's like there's no place to run to and it's only going to get worse.

I think everyone here gets the seriousness of Irma but I feel sick over what's going to happen. After Andrew we didn't have power until October - two months! FPL has been "hardening" the power grid in many areas since then but even so they said millions will be without power after Irma passes.

Evacuees get FREE entrance to the Atlanta Braves game - and 8 of us are here! (sad though as against the Florida Marlins from Miami)

Ugh, the Miami Herald is reporting that police shot someone at MIA (Miami International Airport). No info yet but parts of the airport were evacuated. I'm so glad my daughter's flight left three hours ago!

My son-in-law finally got a clue and is packing up the pets and driving out of state tonight. My daughter texted me a pic of my sweet little grandson sleeping on her lap in the plane. I'm so relieved! Hopefully I'll be able to sleep tonight!

In the meantime, CNN was showing people in the Keys and Homestead who are staying - lots of laughing about having a hurricane party. I'm not religious but if I was I'd be praying for them - they have no idea of what's to come.

ETA: CNN commentator sent out a message to those who plan to stay, begging them to get out while they still can. He actually said it was a stupid action and to risk their lives is a stupid thing to do. I agree.

I know it is hard to believe they are the same category. Please know I am sending prayers from Scotland for all the Websleuths family affected and everyone affected by Irma. Keep us updated how you are doing if it is possible.

So relieved for you too that your family is getting to safety. I've been reading your earlier posts and knew your stomach had to be in knots over all this.

Was really amazed too at your post about living through Hurricane Andrew. Wow! How terrifying to hear your roof being blown off while you're huddled for your lives in the bathroom.

Horrible enough what you went through that day, but then no power for two months. What a nightmare. Glad you're okay now. I know you'll be so relieved when your family is safely out of harm's way.

Some people are planning Hurricane parties, huh? Wonder what they will say when it's all over. Hope they manage to stay safe!!

The actual size can mean not a lot

its like a spring --- both andrew and charles were tight wrapped - small but more ferocious

the tighter the eye the worse winds when the eye lossens open it like letting it all fly so its like splattering outwards

but the size itself does not figure in in terms of intensity and stuff

its really complicated -- at the basics it depends on where eyewall is gonna landfall those are gonna be the most devasted

how the eye transervices is gonna be about width of damage

it depends on a lot of stuff toehr than visualize size

forward movement where the 9 12 part of the storm hits

there are many variable s here
