This is how it looks for us at the present time according to our local weather expert.

Our county butts up with Albany/Doughtery Co. As of now it looks like it will come in right where we live.

Storm looks like it shifted a bit west. Doesn't look good for family homes in Marco Island and Naples.

A question for you, Henry.

If the storm runs slap bang up the spine of Florida with one foot in the Atlantic and the other in the Gulf, what effect could that have on its behaviour?

Could it continually replenish its supply of rain as parts of it pass over the sea before passing back over land?

And could the warmth from the water help it maintain its strength longer than might otherwise be the case?
Hi Melmoth- I'm hearing that this isn't a rain event, like Harvey. Instead it is a terrifying wind event like we have not seen in a long time. The scenes we see from the Caribbean of deep water occur because the islands are at or below sea level. The surge is bringing the water in, rather than rain.

The high pressure system to our north and the low trough that is moving through will control her behavior. Appears that the high pressure system if dipping further south, and that is why the storm is moving more west. A high trumps a low. The high is in control. As the high moves off the coast of the US it will allow the storm to move in further West and north.

As the storm moves off Cuba, it is expected to hit boiling hot water. There are expectations of strengthening and an eye wall replacement. All these things are not good for Florida.

But we will watch and stay vigilant. It could make an unexpected turn. Regardless, southern FL will be significantly impacted beyond anything they can imagine.

Hope this helps.

For South Florida, wind and surge are biggest concerns, but a ton of rain coming as well from #Irma: http://wapo.st/2we4OGd

Latest runs from Euro (red) & GFS (blue) models show Fla peninsula faces dire risk from #Irma, but exact track, ground-zero, not locked in.

Jacksonville is 70 degrees with 100% humidity. High is predicted to be 83.

Local weatherman (WJXT) looking at 8 am update, predicts a Cat 1 in Jax.
Hey Jax - hope you are safe. Jacksonville is in play in various models as cat3 or cat4.

My parents have a place at Amelia Island. We can't find evidence of the last hurricane because of how that area is tucked back. The storms tend to stay off shore and pass on by.

Ironical, that this storm is so big, Jax and Amelia may be faced with a land storm of cat3 or cat4. My folks live in Valdosta and may see a strong cat2.

Hope you are safe.

The storm surge is what devastated us in Sandy, we had winds but it only blew off a few tiles and some siding.

I believe the entire South Florida tip from Alligator Alley to the Keys will be under water with the storm surge.

Thanks. I'm hoping he was right (Cat 1), but personally doubt it will be less than a Cat 2 here. One thing for sure, it isn't going to be good. I'm prepping my hidey hole like I did for Matthew.

So many frightened people...

Dozens gather at Jacksonville Beach to pray Hurricane Irma away

Many turn to their faith to help weather the storm

As anxiety increases withHurricane Irma's approach, many are turning to their faith to help weather the storm.
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has said it several times: Prepare for the storm, but pray it falls apart.

A little bit of humor: http://www.miamiherald.com/living/liv-columns-blogs/dave-barry/article171702477.html

I'm seriously freaked out for all my friends in the path of this storm. Be safe everyone!

From the above link:

My family did manage to secure a large supply of jerky, which we actually like. We chew it thoughtfully while we watch the Weather Channel people tell us, over and over and over, how screwed we are. All our jerky will be gone before Irma gets here.

BBM - :floorlaugh:

I don't eat jerky, but it's so true about digging into hurricane snacks before a storm even arrives, hahaha.

I love Dave Barry.

To say #Irma's damaging wind field will be expansive is an understatement. Risk for gusts near/over 100 mph almost covers all of #Florida

It looks to me like it's going to go right through the Everglades and up through Central Florida.
